#layoffs - good, bad and ugly Let us say you buy a ticket for a cruise. After some point, down the journey if they come back and say, "Sorry, this ship can carry only 1500 passengers but we got 1600. Some of you need to go. Dont worry, we have a small boat that will safely take you back to the starting point !!" Will you be ok with it ? Some layoffs are very much similar and unfortunately employees can do nothing about it. Layoffs are a necessary evil but should also be reasonable. I can think of a few good reasons - 1. Employee has an integrity issue 2. Employee has a performance issue (actual, not made up) 3. There was an M&A and some positions are duplicated 4. Company made a strategic blunder - entire vertical is laid off 5. Company is struggling and layoff is important to survive. If a company had projected 30% growth, but hits only 15% growth rate, is this a good enough reason to layoff people? Probably not. Assuming bottom line is not in red, layoff is a drastic step and other options should be considered. On the other hand, people who signed off on these wrong projections have to go first ! Now, #Google has announced a layoff and claims it is a cost cutting exercise. Some article claims they are moving some jobs to Mexico and India. They have announced stellar results in the recent Qtr, so where is the need for cost cutting? Cost optimization, on the other hand, is a long term activity, and may not require layoff e.g no replacement for natural attrition. Somehow we have accepted the fact, management has absolute right to layoff employees at their sole discretion and they do not have to answer anyone. This will definitely not be good for the company in the long term or employee's morale. At some point, we need some regulations around this. #layoffs, #google #tesla #costcutting

Very shocking: Personal data of over 3.3 million Indian users of DigiYatra app is now owned by a private company facing an ED case There has been an important exposé about the DigiYatra app by "The Ken Web" These are the shocking details that have emerged: Suddenly, last month, the DigiYatra app stopped working & users were asked to download an entirely new app (instead of an update) Turns out that DigiYatra was being operated by a private company called Dataevolve since 2021 The ED booked the CEO of Dataevolve last year in a money laundering case. Now, it seems that the company was engaged in the alleged offense WHILE it handled the DigiYatra app The DigiYatra app was NOT running on the infrastructure of DigiYatra Foundation but, instead, was being run by the private company Dataevolve. This is a CLEAR VIOLATION of all data security & protection rules. Therefore, to remove Dataevolve from the DigiYatra infrastructure, a new app was launched last month instead of just releasing the update Here's the MOST IMPORTANT POINT: The DigiYatra data of over 3.3 million Indian users is now owned by the tainted private company Dataevolve. #DigiYatra #DataTheft #DataBroker #india #airtravel

Human Error (or) Too much dependency on AI I saw a news article on news18.com announcing the sad demise of a 39 yr old, small time actor in Tamil cinema - Pradeep K Vijayan (may his soul rest in peace 💐). The article then moves on to talk about the yesteryear movie director K Vijayan, who passed away in 1988 (what's worse?, the article even mentions the year 1988 as well). For a minute, I thought I have moved on from one article to the next, but I was on the same piece. This was a major face palm moment for me 🤦 Not sure if it was a careless human error or the effect of some bad unsupervised usage of AI for content generation. https://lnkd.in/gMWYQWFd While AI is becoming very able and efficient in content writing and text generation tasks, it still has a long way to go in terms of fact checking and in accommodating errors at 'source'. Content creators esp. Journalists need to be very careful if they employ AI to generate content for their articles. It should be used as a mere tool and not as a system in auto-pilot mode. What worries me is that such bad and factually incorrect content may subsequently be used in further 'learning' and this will lead to more troubles. #ai #contentwriting #news #journalism

Continuing the FitBiz360 story..... We identified a great technical partner in India - Rage Communications. They co-created an architecture for the solution and started coding using rapid prototyping. This meant we were quality checking every module and delivery, before it was considered "live". We made what turned out to be one of our best decisions, we split the software from the content (so no content is hard coded). Why is that important - well here is an actual event: - The HR Director of Rage asked if we could run an employee engagement survey for them - Using our in-house subject matter expert on HR issues, we created a survey and loaded it within half a day. - The survey was run in the business and from start to finish took 48 Hours. The reason for 48 hours was simply the time it took over 200 people to respond to the request to complete the survey. - As soon as the last employee hit submit (well within say 2 minutes processing time) I was looking at the results and the final report - I shared this with the HR Director and he sprung the "surprise" - the company had a physical consultancy conducting an employee engagement previously that took around 3 month duration in total. - We had taken 48 hours, remember and then the final icing was when he said FitBiz360 had hit 95% of the issues identified by the physical consultants. - What would this efficiency and effectiveness uplift provide for your consulting practice? - The case study is available if you would like to know more - just message or reply yes below.

Bhaarath Vijay Ramesh is a shining example of a founding team member who elevates the startup journey for everyone around him. I explicitly 'coached' him to focus 150% of his energy on Lyric for the time being and build communities later in our journey. Yet, the entrepreneur in him managed to devote 150% of his energy to Lyric while simultaneously creating an incredible community of Designers in India. Bravo! Tip to self: Perhaps I should have asked for 200% of his energy :)
