Bringing impact through sustainable energy innovations and enterprises
About us
Sustainable energy practitioners have long noticed energy access affects rural and urban populations’ livelihood, generation capacity, education attendance, health outcomes and overall quality of life. In response, SELCO India (for profit, social enterprise) created SELCO Foundation on 5th October, 2010 as a public charitable trust, with the mission to: 1. Systematically identify diverse needs of underserved communities, understand and define the role of sustainability and energy in these communities. 2. Create and support innovative and sustainable solutions that positively impact well-being, education and livelihoods and work towards the alleviation of poverty. 3. Foster ecosystem development in the social sector through holistic thought processes in technology, finance, entrepreneurship and policy. SELCO Foundation envisions a socially sustainable society: we seek to create avenues for asset building, enhancement in quality of life and wealth creation that will uplift deprived sections of society through sustainable development solutions. It uses soft funding and flexible capital to develop robust and field-proven technological and financial models in the field of energy and sustainability. It aims to generate public awareness about these models, while also building the ecosystem for the creation and delivery of such solutions. The foundation supports replication and utilization of these models in other deprived regions of India and the world, thereby achieving greater leverage on resources.

The Alamba Chetna Trust ( Alamba Charitable Trust) ensure reliable livelihoods for 30 residents with spinal cord injury. As self-care ability decreases, many see them as a burden to the family. Many families even abandon them due to their chronic health condition. These individuals try to put their life back in order by accepting and adjusting to live with the disability. The introduction of NeoMotion scooters has been a beacon of hope. Many have taken up professions like food delivery, while others use the scooters for their daily chores. However, the energy needed to charge these scooters became a critical issue with huge energy bills and frequent power outages. To address this, SELCO Foundation in partnership with the Alamba Chetna Trust, deployed #solarpowered charging stations, water heaters and powered all critical energy requirements of the residential hostel effectively meeting the needs of residents by providing a reliable and eco-friendly solution. #DRE #Empowerment #DisabilityAwareness #SolarEnergy #Sustainability #Independence #Innovation #Inclusivity Alamba Charitable Trust | Siddarth Daga | NeoMotion

#Workat45 For about 70% of the rural households in India, livestock rearing ensures a continuous source of secondary income. Most livestock-owning families are small, marginal and landless households. Thermal comfort for Indian cross-bred milking cows ranges between 25-37°C. In regions, where temperatures are higher than 35°C, cattle suffer from heat stress. The implemented farm design allows the cows to exhibit their natural behaviours, be social, consume fresh vegetation and drink water from the trough - emphasizing on sanitation as well. Flexibility and modularity can be provided while some guiding principles remain the same: - energy needs are met by solar PV rooftops - spatial requirement for an adult cow is maintained and the size of the shed is dictated by cattle size - the height is the same but roofing material (puff panels and mangalore tiles) are decided on context and budget of the user - feed area and management area are provided Get in touch if you'd like to collaborate! Revolutionizing Coir Yarn Production with #DRE Rope Making Machine! Many communities still rely on manually operated traditional ratts to produce coir yarn ropes, which are used in construction, packaging, fishing industry etc. A process typically requiring three people - one to turn the ratt handle and two to spin the fibers into yarn. Introducing the mechanized rope making machine with 4 hooks offers a viable solution to enhance productivity, particularly in areas with limited labour availability and it is suitable for making coir, plastic, cotton, and sisal ropes. Additionally, it can mitigate the risk of shoulder injuries, which are common among those turning the handle. These are also cost-effective, making it suitable for solar power applications. To understand the diverse needs of users, a series of site visits were conducted across various regions in Southern India, including Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, where coir yarn production is prevalent. Through extensive research and development efforts in collaboration with manufacturers, SELCO Foundation has established a comprehensive set of user requirements for coir yarn makers and developed DRE driven coir rope making machine. With the loans from Canara Bank and subsidies from Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana scheme, the final solution has now been adopted by 25+ different user groups, each consisting of 2-3 members. This #inclusiveinnovation with manufacturers has revolutionized coir yarn production, making the process safer, more efficient, and sustainable. The Impact is Undeniable: 🌟Increased Productivity and Income: Families of two previously produced 100 to 150 (20 ft length) coir ropes daily now see a production increase upto 250-300 (40 ft) coir ropes daily, doubling incomes 🌟Improved Work Environment: Enjoy quiet operation and flexible working hours. 🌟Reduced Labor Needs: The DRE machine eliminates the need for extra workers, saving labor costs. 🌟Simplified Operation: Easily control the machine with a wireless remote sensor Know more about the Innovation at👉 : https://lnkd.in/gGNwwCUw Read more at👉 : https://lnkd.in/gpU36B6c #Innovation #CommunityEmpowerment #SustainableDevelopment #CoirYarn #SELCOFoundation Canara Bank | Mudra-loan | Coir Board Government of India | Harish Hande | The Lemelson Foundation

#WorkAt45 How do people experience #heatstress? 🌡 Change in work timings compromising highly on production and income. Women working hard on-field and at home relentlessly. Ramani (in the post)is burying fish that is his means of livelihood with 400 other fish farmers in the area. While global phenomenon might dictate these situations, people need solutions NOW. SELCO's work on the ground helps alleviate heat stress across livelihoods, and looks at cooling needs in different sectors. To develop and scale climate-adaptive interventions, technical solutions must be customized to suit those for whom they are intended. Affordable climate-adaptive products like cool roofs and solar energy solutions should be available easily across the country with inclusive financial products. Moreover, service delivery, for maintenance, architecture and design should be included within solution packages. #heatwaves #heatstress #climatechange #ClimateAction #Sustainability #GreenTech #coolingplans #globalwarming #heatinequality #sustianabledevelopment #coolingsolutions World Health Organization, Global Heat Health Information Network, UN Environment Programme National Prog. on Climate Change and Human Health NCDC Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) National Small-Holder Poultry Development Trust ( NSPDT), Centre for Research in Schemes & Policies (CRISP), Mahila Housing Trust, Akshayakalpa Organic, APMAS, Clean Cooling Collaborative, World Resources Institute, Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi , CII - Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), India Development Review (IDR) , EastMojo, Purpose The Lemelson Foundation The DOEN Foundation IKEA Foundation Good Energies Foundation
