"There is evidence that higher temperatures significantly increase hospitalisation rates, a report from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) has found. The data shows that between 2015 and 2019 emergency hospital admissions for temperature-affected diseases were 8.5% higher on hot days in Ireland. The ESRI combined temperature data from Met Éireann with emergency inpatient hospitalisation data, showing that temperature rises significantly increase hospitalisations here for temperature-related health conditions." 💡 Read more key findings from the report: https://lnkd.in/dB9xkeNA 📰 Read RTE News coverage of the report:

On top of being the warmest year on record for Ireland, 2023 has also been confirmed as the wettest, following the conclusion of Met Éireann’s analysis of the complete set of quality-controlled rainfall measurements. 🌧️ With the collection and quality-controlling of thousands of manually recorded rainfall observations from around the country now complete, analysis shows 2023 was narrowly wetter than the previous record year of 2009. 📈 As part of the analysis, March and July of 2023 were confirmed as the wettest on record, while five of the 12 months saw over 135% of their long-term average figures for 1991 to 2020. 🗓️ For the full report, visit: https://lnkd.in/dQUaaAgm 🔗 #irelandsclimate #climateaction #wetwetwet

Last month was a generally cool and dry one across Ireland, with temperatures and rainfall levels both falling below long term average figures. ⬇️⬇️ Met Éireann’s climate statement for June 2024 shows an average temperature of 13.18 °C for Ireland, a full three degrees cooler than the same period last year. 📉 All monthly rainfall totals across the country meanwhile, were below the long term average period of 1981-2010. 🌧️ Check out the monthly climate statement in full 🔗👉 https://lnkd.in/ecv-tgmp #climatechange #climateservices #irelandsclimate

As we approach the end of another busy month, we take the opportunity to look back on the recent meetings of the World Meteorological Organization Executive Council, where the road map for the WMO's #EarlyWarningsforAll ⚠️ initiative received the green light. ✅ The ‘Early Warnings for All’ road map outlines the vision, objectives and actions to enhance the delivery and use of multi-hazard early warning systems for weather, climate, and water-related hazards. It covers the period from 2024-2027 with detailed dates and deliverables. 📑 🇮🇪 Met Éireann’s Director Eoin Moran has been leading the #EarlyWarningsForAll initiative since his election to the role of second Vice-President of WMO in June of last year. At the WMO Executive Council, he chaired the sessions that led to the approval of the EW4A road map, as well as the adoption of an implementation plan for a Greenhouse Gas Watch and scaled-up action on the cryosphere. ❄ For more details, visit: https://lnkd.in/e49AeKeY 🔗 #EarlyWarningsForAll #globalinitiative #WMO #extremeweather #climate

Met Éireann’s Agricultural Meteorology Unit #Agmet was quite literally on the ground this week as part of its work in improving the Irish Soil Moisture Monitoring Network #ISMON. They were joined by colleagues from University College Dublin and University of Galway in extracting more than 200 soil samples at Tullamore Farm, Co Offaly 📍 and Dooary Forest, Co Laois 📍 to get ground-truth data fir evaluating the Cosmic-Ray Neutron Sensor (CRNS). The samples will be analysed at UCD’s laboratories for soil type, density, porosity and a range of other factors, with the results to be presented at the Cosmic Ray Neutron Conference in Northern Ireland in September: https://cosmos2024.org/ This is the second year of such sampling work, which is hoped will improve Ireland's understanding of soil moisture and the forecasting of soil moisture levels in the future. 🌧 Caption 1 (from left to right): UCD Technical Officer, Joey Henchy, Head of Met Éireann’s Agmet Unit, Dr Klara F., Met Éireann Meteorologist, Joe Carey, Met Éireann ISMON Postdoc Researcher, Haleh Karbala Ali, University of Galway Lecturer, Dr Eve Daly and UCD Lecturer/Assistant Professor, Dr Brian Tobin at the Irish Farmers Journal facility at #TullamoreFarm.

Today, Met Éireann formally launches the final report from the #TRANSLATE initiative, which aims to provide the first ever standardised, bias-corrected climate projections for Ireland. Developed in collaboration with University of Galway, Irish Centre for High-End Computing ICHEC, University College Cork and MaREI, the report provides in-depth information about future Irish projections using both greenhouse gas scenarios and future levels of global warming. The report also outlines the application of these projections in producing risk frameworks for the benefit of Irish society, and has produced outputs already being used in the production of climate services, coordinated by the National Framework for Climate Services (NFCS).
