Universities adapt to the rapidly-evolving skills needs and continue to deliver graduates with essential, work-ready skills. By educating through practical, hands-on experience, our universities equip students with the tools they need to succeed in their careers and drive innovation in every industry. It is crucial to the Irish economy that we continue to support higher education. Underpinning the future supply of high-skills talent is the bedrock of economic development in Ireland. Tax may have been the golden goose of the past in attracting the inflow of investment by major multi-national companies but talent is what will keep them here. Investing in higher education and research is a critical enabler of economic health. It's over two years since government identified a €300m+ gap in funding higher education but that gap is a long way from being closed. In our Pre-Budget Submission, we outline the need to urgently address the remaining gap in order to secure the future talent and innovation needs of the country.

Research conducted within Irish universities holds immense potential value for our society. The IUA Three Minute Thesis competition showcases talented PhD researchers who effectively communicate their work. Victoria Kirsten Ward, a PhD researcher from the University of Galway, highlighted the potential impact of her research very effectively during her presentation at last year's #IUA3MT national competition.

PhD researchers drive innovation, but they also play a crucial role in mentoring undergraduates and fostering a vibrant community eager to discover and learn. One such researcher is Patrick Dolan, who was a finalist in last years #IUA3MT from University of Limerick #researchers #research #innovation #influence #leaders #education #highereducation

IUA Presidents told Oireachtas members today that the gains in funding for higher education in the last 2 years have been wiped out by unfunded government agreed pay awards. The €307m funding shortfall identified by Government in May 2022 has been exacerbated by a failure to provide sufficient funds for national pay awards agreed by Government. Almost all of the extra €100m provided over the last two years under Funding the Future has been eroded by an under-funding of pay awards, leaving universities materially short of funds to pay existing staff. In the Pre-Budget Submission the IUA is calling for: 🔴A €92m supplementary budget in 2024 to cover the costs of existing staff; 🔴A further €171m in Budget 2025 to continue covering existing staff costs; 🔴At least €120m additional Funding the Future allocation. This would still leave almost one-third of the €307m funding gap after three successive budget. ➡ Read submission: https://lnkd.in/eZ_VPhj8 Patrick O'Donovan TD Fine Gael Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Jim Miley Orla Feely University College Dublin Linda Doyle Trinity College Dublin Daire Keogh Dublin City University John O'Halloran University College Cork University of Galway Maynooth University University of Limerick Technological University Dublin
