About us
The Irish Research Council was launched in 2012. It is an agency of the Department of Education and Skills, and operates under the aegis of the Higher Education Authority. The core function of the Council is to support excellent frontiers research across all disciplines and all career stages. It places a particular focus on early-stage career researchers and promotes diverse career opportunities for researchers by partnering with employers. The Council also has a particular role in supporting research with a societal focus, and has established partnerships across government and civic society.

The fertility rate has dropped in 11 of the 27 EU members states in the last 20 years, suggesting a ‘crisis in reproduction’ in Europe. Fertility is also understood to decline abruptly after a certain age, even though the mechanisms of resilience of reproductive cells is only beginning to be studied. Time-lapse microscopy has been at the centre of the way we know about reproductive biology since the early 20th century, and today continues to condition how scientists create images of reproductive cells in laboratory settings. In this sense, animation techniques are key to scientific and popular understandings of both the ‘biological clock’ and the supposed challenges or urgencies of population replacement. Dr Rebecca Close’s DOROTHY MSCA project examines the role of time-lapse technologies in imaging the reproductive cell in lab settings and shaping popular understandings of fertility and reproduction more broadly. Check out the blog from Irish Research Council DOROTHY MSCA COFUND awardee Dr Sophie Franklin on her research on nineteenth century writers referring to violence as a disease, to shed light on ongoing public health approaches to the reduction and cure of violence. Sophie’s project – ‘Violence as Contagious: Historicising Anglophone Narratives of Violence, Health, and Disease, 1800s to the Present’ – examines this historical context in order to shed light on ongoing public health approaches to the reduction and cure of violence. In particular, she is engaging with current public discourses surrounding treating violence as a public health crisis through the analysis of Violence Reduction Units (VRUs), government-funded initiatives in the UK that adopt public health methods to tackle violence within communities and across society. It was proud day for BITCI yesterday, with the launch of a groundbreaking report on ‘Carbon Budgets: Opportunities And Challenges For Irish Business’. We are delighted to partner with DCU Business School on this report funded by the Irish Research Council. The research looks into what carbon budgets mean for Irish businesses and shows the important role they have to play in supporting Ireland to achieve our climate targets. As the nature and climate crisis continues to have severe social and economic impacts, the need for action has never been greater. The report shows that cross industry collaboration and working with policymakers is key if we are to make meaningful progress. Kudos to all involved, especially to the lead authors Dr Aideen O'Dochartaigh and Anna Pringle from Dublin City University. Supported by members of our Environmental advisory team Aoife Gillen (Remote- Donegal), Cillian McMahon and Feena Kirrkamm. Bats, often enigmatic in their nocturnal habits, have long intrigued scientists aiming to understand their complex behaviours and habitats. GPS tagging is a transformative tool in bat research, offering detailed insights into their habitat use, aiding in epidemiological modelling, and improving our understanding of roost connectivity. Dr Frédéric Touzalin's research is going to greatly improve our understanding of the movements of these fascinating creatures. Dr Aideen O'Dochartaigh (Assistant Professor in Accounting) and Anna Pringle (PhD Candidate) from Dublin City University have just released a groundbreaking report funded by the Irish Research Council. The report delves into the implications of carbon budgets for Irish businesses, aiming to achieve a 51% reduction in emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. Key findings from interviews with business experts and policy agencies reveal fundamental conflicts between Ireland’s industrial development plans and climate targets. There is a pressing need for honest conversations between government and businesses to tackle these challenges head-on. The report also sheds light on the struggles of larger companies in controlling emissions from suppliers and customers, creating tensions within the business landscape. Smaller suppliers, on the other hand, may feel the pressure to reduce emissions without ample support. To bridge this gap, businesses are calling for more government incentives like tax credits and low-interest loans. While supports have been introduced, there is room for improved communication and collaboration between businesses and policymakers to unlock financing for those in need. Both sides - businesses and policymakers - need to work together towards a coherent direction for policy that aligns industrial development with climate targets. The report offers key recommendations for policymakers to strengthen emissions policy and for businesses to take responsibility for reducing emissions across their supply chains. The report is a crucial step towards aligning action across industries and inspiring others to engage in the decarbonization agenda.
