【Sharing is Caring -- 2024 Hospital Authority #Outstanding #Young #Achiever Ms Tang Ngar-chui】 Ms Tang Ngar-chui Associate Nurse Consultant (Intensive Care Unit) Princess Margaret Hospital To improve patients’ treatment outcomes and minimise complications, and to keep colleagues up to date on new technologies and methods, Ngar-chui actively promotes training programmes to enrich colleagues’ clinical knowledge. Her commitment to patient-centred care motivated her to develop tele-visit service in the Intensive Care Unit to facilitate better communication between patients and their families during COVID-19. "A paralysed patient with intubation had difficulty in expressing himself and frowned a lot. After taking time to get to know him, I realised that his face was itchy, and the smelly hair and neck collar bothered him. Hence, I washed and cut his hair in the hospital bed and provided him with a new neck collar. During the visit, his family cried and expressed their gratitude, and the patient did his best to say thank you with his lips. We cannot cure all diseases, but I hope to try my best as a #nurse to understand and take care of the patients’ needs." Ngar-chui shared one of her most memorable days at work. He also established #haematology beds and haematology clinic at Pok Oi Hospital (POH) to cater for the service needs arising from population growth in Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai. He shared, “5 August 2022 is my most memorable day at work since it was when the haematology clinic at POH commenced service. It is encouraging and affirming that we have successfully developed new haematology service, despite not having many patients on that particular day.” As the clinic operations have matured, the number of benefiting patients has continued to increase. It is the joint effort of NTWC haematology team and the Department of Medicine and Geriatrics of POH that makes it possible and improves the clinical efficiency in NTWC. 【Kwong Wah Spirit Shines through in Successful Commissioning -- Operation “New KWH” Squad at Kwong Wah Hospital, Hospital Authority #Outstanding #Team #Award 2024】 Operation “New KWH” Squad Kwong Wah Hospital Commissioning of the Phase 1 Building of the #Redevelopment Project of Kwong Wah Hospital (KWH) has been completed last year, the Team behind the commissioning of KWH looks back fondly on a delicate operation to move tiny patients from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to a new building, “we had to transfer eight critically ill newborns to the new building,” a team member recalls. “The infants in the incubators were the size of your palm, and my colleagues practised the route of the move over and over because there was no margin for error. On the day of the relocation, each newborn was escorted by a team of senior colleagues throughout the journey, and they all arrived safely. The emotion of that achievement is beyond words.” The successful transfer was the result of the collective efforts of all staff. “Rome wasn’t built in a day, and we had spent several years preparing for a smooth commissioning. We set up 11 working groups in 2020 to coordinate staff in a race against time to manage the transition of patient services, facilities testing and commissioning, equipment installation and functional test, and business supporting services, all of which were incredibly intricate tasks,” the team member says. “Through it all, we had only one goal in mind – to ensure the safe and successful commissioning of the Phase 1 Building.” Services have had to be transferred while ensuring that existing services are not disturbed and that the new building is fully functional. The Team says colleagues have a strong sense of belonging to the hospital and have planned for a vast range of different scenarios to avoid emergencies, reflecting the unique Kwong Wah spirit. “KWH is the first public hospital in Hong Kong to introduce 5G private network to meet the corporate direction of the development of smart hospitals,” the team member says. “We plan to provide an increased level of ambulatory care services in the coming future, providing more diversified day services to cope with the ageing population and an increasing number of patients with chronic diseases.” Construction work on the second phase of the redevelopment has begun and, while many more challenges undoubtedly lie ahead, the redevelopment project is opening the door to a future full of opportunity and possibility, and it is important for colleagues to stand united. 【Walking Together on the Difficult Journey -- Multidisciplinary Care of Parents and Babies at Periviable Gestations at Queen Mary Hospital, Hospital Authority #Outstanding #Team #Award 2024】 Multidisciplinary Care of Parents and Babies at Periviable Gestations Queen Mary Hospital Babies born extremely prematurely face a struggle to survive from the moment they take their first breath and can be prone to developmental issues as they grow. However, medical advances mean they now have higher survival rates and a much better chance of growing up healthy. A multidisciplinary team for babies delivered between 23 and 25 weeks – regarded as the borders of viability – and their parents was set up at Queen Mary Hospital in 2021. The Team comprises of #obstetric and #paediatric healthcare professionals, clinical #psychologists, and #socialworkers. Team members counsel parents on the long-term outlook and potential impact of delivery at periviability, and guide them to make decision on curative care or palliative care in the event of an emergency. “Some mothers who have struggled to conceive and prefer on a multi-pronged lifesaving approach at 23 weeks, despite the fact that they understand their babies may have a high risk of cerebral palsy and complications after birth. There are also husbands who don’t want to put their wives at risk knowing the prognosis of the babies may not be good. We understand that parents-to-be are at a loss when it comes to these situations, so we want to use our professional knowledge and data to help them make choices,” the spokesperson says. The Team provides medical support to mothers, such as prescribing antenatal corticosteroid to accelerate fetal lung maturation and increase the chances of survival for infants. Many of these little fighters can survive and discharge after a stormy journey in #Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with the company and support from our staff and their family members. “Some parents have come back to the hospital to celebrate the first birthday of a child who survived.” The team members also comfort devastated parents who lose their babies. “The day parents lose a baby is heartbreaking but, in some cases, emotions also strike on other days after they are discharged from the hospital. So, we follow up with parents and help them deal with the feelings of loss. We have parents who lost their babies coming back to express their gratitude to us for being there to help them through their most difficult journey. Their stories are our motivation.” The Team now hopes to extend its caring services to other hospitals in future and to educate the public more widely on the issue of fetal loss. 【Cluster’s Dedication Makes Dreams Come True -- HA’s New Territories West Cluster Integrated Acute Stroke Care Team, Hospital Authority #Outstanding #Team Award 2024】 New Territories West Cluster (NTWC) Integrated Acute Stroke Care Team Tuen Mun Hospital / Pok Oi Hospital / Tin Shui Wai Hospital “We had a dream that every acute stroke patient in the New Territories West could receive prompt treatment, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, regardless of their age or severity of condition.” Today, that dream has become a reality with the multidisciplinary team’s dedication from colleagues in the three hospitals of the New Territories West Cluster (NTWC). In 2014, NTWC established a taskforce for #acute #stroke service, initiating the expansion of acute stroke care services from Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) to a cluster-based service. The Team reached a milestone in 2017 by launching a cluster-based intravenous thrombolytic therapy, becoming the first cluster to provide this round-the-clock service. “Acute stroke patients are assessed when they arrive at the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Departments of TMH, Pok Oi Hospital (POH) or Tin Shui Wai Hospital (TSWH). Patients at TMH and POH, if their condition permits, will receive IV-thrombolytic treatments before being transferred to the Acute Stroke Unit, while patients at TSWH will transfer to TMH for concerned treatment,” the Team explains. In 2021, the Team also provided an intra-arterial thrombectomy service in a cluster-based network, patients with criteria met will transfer to TMH for clot retrieval. Acute stroke treatment is a race against time, the shorter the time taken to treatment, the better the chances of recovery. To swiftly rescue patients, all hospital departments must closely coordinate throughout the process, from receiving patients in the A&E to the preliminary assessment by stroke nurses, followed by the Radiology Department conducting brain scans, etc. The Team acknowledges that the process of #coordination and integration was challenging, “we succeeded because we all harboured the same hopes — to benefit patients and live up to their trust and responsibility.” The Team looks forward to reaching more milestones, including establishing Integrated Neuroscience Centre at TMH. This will involve consolidating space on the second floor of the main building and opening new wards to develop a one-stop integrated neurology services.   [Video in Cantonese] #HA #HospitalAuthority #HelpingPeopleStayHealthy #awardsandrecognition #outstandingteam #NTWC #TMH #POH #TSWH

【Keep the Hearts Beating as Gift of Life -- Heart Transplant Team at Grantham Hospital / Queen Mary Hospital, HA #Outstanding #Team Award 2024】 Heart Transplant Team Grantham Hospital / Queen Mary Hospital #Heart #transplants shine a light of hope for patients with severe heart failure. Being the only heart transplant team in Hong Kong, the Department of #Cardiac #Medicine at Grantham Hospital and the #Cardiothoracic #Surgery Department at Queen Mary Hospital have performed more than 250 cases of heart transplants since their establishment in 1992. The long journey of waiting for a heart transplant may take years; in the meantime, the multidisciplinary heart transplant team has been collaborating closely. “Over the decades, the Team has built up a deep tacit understanding and inherited the spirit of patient-centered care with the common aspiration of safeguarding patients’ health,” says the Team. On the path to saving hearts, the Team always dares to break new ground. In 2010, the Team implanted the Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) in a patient for the first time to help the patient maintain heart function and buy time while waiting for a transplant. The technology has enabled some patients to live for 10 more years, and the number of heart transplant cases has increased every year. “Enhancing the quality of life of patients who are waiting for a transplant is an important issue. The LVAD helps patients improve their physical health, allowing them to lead a normal life and enjoy time with their loved ones.” One major challenge in heart transplant is the difficulty in finding suitable donors. To boost the chances of patients receiving a transplant, the Team introduced the Organ Care System (OCS) in 2020, which is the first of its kind in Asia. The OCS is a transformative technology designed to better preserve the cardiac function of a ‘marginal heart’ which would previously have been unsuitable for transplanting, so as to increase organ utilisation. There have been three successful cases to date. “Every donated heart is precious. We must save as many hearts as possible to manifest the selfless love of the donors and their families.” The Team hopes that more citizens will respond to the call for organ donation. “We would like to thank the organ donors, their families, and the media for lighting the flame of hope with their compassion. Many heart transplant patients have started a new life to actively serve others and make an impact on their lives. We hope to keep the love alive and continue to seek better technologies to treat patients.” [Video in Cantonese] #HA #HospitalAuthority #HelpingPeopleStayHealthy #awardsandrecognition #outstandingteam #HKWC #GH #QMH

【A Commitment to Young Generations through Professionalism -- Dr Leung Wing-cheong, HA #Outstanding #Staff Awardee 2024】 Dr Leung Wing-cheong Consultant (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), Kwong Wah Hospital “The Hospital Authority has given me its best, so naturally I have also given my best to the Hospital Authority and the patients of public hospitals,” Dr Leung Wing-cheong says with gratitude as he looks back on his career of nearly 35 years. In 2005, he began a new chapter in his career at Kwong Wah Hospital as a consultant and went on to become Chief of Service of the hospital’s Department of #Obstetrics & #Gynaecology (O&G) for 11 years. Dr Leung now hopes to impart his knowledge and experience to younger doctors. Dr Leung fondly remembers the life mentors he encountered over the years who inspired him to get involved in the research and development of O&G in the public healthcare system. “I am fortunate to have met many intelligent people in my life,” he reflects. “I observe and emulate the strengths of others and maintain an open attitude. If you isolate yourself in a small place, you become like a frog in a well and never progress.” Dr Leung earned his doctorate in medicine in 2010 and has published more than 240 #research papers. Dr Leung contributes continually to his field with the goal of creating the best possible #service for his patients. He is committed to developing the prenatal diagnostic platform FMPRG, preventing mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B virus, reducing postpartum haemorrhage, and participating in the establishment of a breastmilk bank, etc. “Eight public hospitals have already been accredited as baby-friendly hospitals, and a breastmilk bank will soon be established at the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital,” he says. “This will allow premature or sick infants who lack breast milk to receive donated breastmilk, which is greatly beneficial to their health.” Dr Leung understands the importance of passing on knowledge, whether in clinical practice or research work, and hopes to impart his beliefs and experiences to a new generation of doctors. “When I was younger, my seniors gave me opportunities to engage in a variety of research projects and services and this now drives me to do my part for the next generation. Even when I retire, there will be others who will continue the legacy.”   [Video in Cantonese] #HA #HospitalAuthority #HelpingPeopleStayHealthy #awardsandrecognition #outstandingstaff #KCC #KWH
