Often treated as trash, #oyster shells are actually very useful for restoring oyster reefs and enhancing #marine ecology. Since 2021, we’ve been working with The Nature Conservancy to recycle oyster shells for restoring oyster reefs near the newly built seawall for the Three-runway System at #HKIA, with an aim to improving the #biodiversity and fishery resources of the waters near the #ThirdRunway and protecting shorelines. Every week, discarded and cleaned oyster shells are collected from participating hotels and restaurants, and sent to a recycling site for sorting and natural weathering. These shells are then delivered to suitable coastal areas, such as the waters near the Third Runway and Tolo Harbour, for oyster reef deployment and restoration. So far, the results have been encouraging. In the past two years, the number of participating restaurants increased from five to 10, from which 46 tonnes oyster shells were collected, up from 18 tonnes in 2021. Based on these results, our Marine Ecology Enhancement Fund (#MEEF) continued to provide #funding support in 2023 and expanded the project’s scale, covering 15 participating hotels and restaurants, including the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, The Verandah at The Repulse Bay, The Peninsula Hong Kong, Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers and more. As awareness grows about #waste reduction and #recycling, more industry members are interested in oyster shell recycling. This year, our project team has the ambitious goal of collecting 50 tonnes of oyster shells to further develop and restore larger-scale oyster reefs. The team will also host staff engagement activities and environmental talks for participating hotels and restaurants, promoting the communal effort in protecting and growing our local marine ecosystem. #hongkongairport #hkairport #hkg #airports #aviation #oystershellsrecycling #HKIASustainability #HKIAesg #esg #sustainability #3RS #HKIA3RS #oysterreef

Taking electronics out of the carry-on luggage for preflight #security screening seems like a standard procedure, but it’ll soon become a thing of the past in #HKIA. Starting this month, we’ll begin implementing a new #smart security screening system in phases, making HKIA the world's first to operate smart security screening channels in the entire airport. The existing 2D screening capability will be replaced by 3D and 360° CT-based X-ray scanning technology, allowing passengers to keep their electronic devices, liquids, aerosols and gels in their carry-on luggage, significantly streamlining the screening procedure. The new system is also packed with highly sophisticated features such as auto tray recirculation, in-built tray sterilisation, and automatic alerts for uncollected items, vastly enhancing the passenger experience and operational performance. To reduce unnecessary physical contact with the security staff, we’re also employing full-body scanners for further screening to replace the existing manual search that uses a hand-held detector, in which advanced imaging technology will accurately locate concealed items while respecting our passengers’ privacy. The new passenger security screening system is already operational in part of the South and North Departures Immigration Halls of Terminal 1 since 2 July. With plans to reach a total of 50 channels and 32 full-body scanners in phases in Terminal 1, the new system is expected to increase overall passenger handling throughput by 20%. These upgrades are an exciting addition to the world-class infrastructure and airport experience at HKIA, without compromising passenger and flight safety. #hongkongairport #hkairport #hkg #airports #aviation #HKIAtechnology #technology #airportoperations #safety #smartairport

We’re thrilled to announce that we have recently awarded the tender for the development of #autonomous vehicles and the associated transportation system for carrying visitors between the Hong Kong Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (#HZMB) and #SKYCITY at #HKIA, the first-ever autonomous mass #transportation system in Hong Kong. The tender was awarded to KCM - PML Joint Venture, formed by KC Smart Mobility Company Limited (KC Smart Mobility), a subsidiary of Kwoon Chung Bus Holdings Limited, and Prime Motors Limited. The joint venture has also joined forces with Baidu, the global market leader in autonomous driving technology, as technology provider of the intelligent transportation integrated system; and Xiamen King Long as vehicle supplier. The autonomous transportation system will operate on Airportcity Link, a dedicated vehicular bridge, allowing visitors to travel between SKYCITY and the Hong Kong Port of the HZMB in just three minutes each way. With a maximum of 16 passengers per vehicle, the entire autonomous system will be able to carry 500 passengers per hour in each direction at launch, making HKIA the world’s first and only airport to put autonomous vehicles into large-scale live airport operations. In the future, the autonomous transportation system is expected to transport 2,000 passengers per hour in each direction, with plans to extend its services to the nearby town centre of Tung Chung. Autonomous technology holds immense potential in connecting people, places and opportunities, and we’re excited to be at the forefront of its development. Stay tuned for more updates! #hongkongairport #hkairport #hkg #airports #aviation #HKIAtechnology #technology #AirportcityLink

Ocean #trash is a serious #marine issue that affects the health of people, wildlife and the local economy. Our conservation effort often involves cutting-edge technology and long-term infrastructure — but sometimes, we just have to put the gloves on and get down to work. Last weekend, the Airport Authority (AA) family assembled at Tai Long Wan, Lantau, for the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Hong Kong, organised by the Green Council to relieve the local marine debris issue and induce behavioural change amongst our community. The ICC is a #global event initiated by the Ocean Conservancy since 1986 to engage the community to collect and document the trash from beaches and waterways all around the world. To that end, we’re glad to have contributed to this meaningful cause. Over 30 of our staff and their family members put on an exemplary display of dedication to protecting our environment by collecting a total of 170kg of trash, and made a visible #impact for the local community and #environment. #hkia #hongkongairport #hkairport #hkg #airports #aviation #HKIAculture #wellness #companyculture #staffactivities #conservation #esg #HKIAesg
