I can’t believe it’s been almost 20 years already since I started working in marketing 👩🎓 And ever since until today, I’ve been passionate about user acquisition : growth is what makes me thrill ! That's why I immediately answered present to Business of Apps when Artem Dogtiev asked me to take part in one of their podcast episodes - though it's not the easiest exercise if you ask me 😉 In this episode I do my best to share some of the stuff I learned along the way, some actionable insights, and open the discussion to what app growth might look like in a world where the mobile industry is mature, as I can see it’s getting harder for us growth marketers to drive new users at a good cost for our mobile apps 💸 Unsurprisingly indeed, we enter an era where it’s going to be only more difficult to drive user growth using only a short-term strategy. As the competitive landscape is getting overcrowded, I’m convinced that what will make the difference has more to do with marketing in general, and brand building more specifically : knowing who your users are, what they’re looking for, so you can build a brand that connects with them, in a trusting & authentic way. Mistral Releases Codestral, Its First Generative AI Model For Code: Mistral, the French AI startup backed by Microsoft and valued at $6 billion, has released its first generative AI model for coding, dubbed Codestral. From a report: Codestral, like other code-generating models, is designed to help developers write and interact with code. It was trained on over 80 programming languages, including Python, Java, C++ and JavaScript, explains Mistral in a blog post. Codestral can complete coding functions, write tests and "fill in" partial code, as well as answer questions about a codebase in English. Mistral describes the model as "open," but that's up for debate. The startup's license prohibits the use of Codestral and its outputs for any commercial activities. There's a carve-out for "development," but even that has caveats: the license goes on to explicitly ban "any internal usage by employees in the context of the company's business activities." The reason could be that Codestral was trained partly on copyrighted content. Codestral might not be worth the trouble, in any case. At 22 billion parameters, the model requires a beefy PC in order to run. Read more of this story at Slashdot.

💡 Voodoo’s BeReal Deal Is More Than Just Opportunistic Last week, French mobile publisher Voodoo announced its acquisition of the social networking app BeReal. in a deal valued at up to $500M. According to Sifted, one-third of the acquisition value ($166M) will be paid in cash, while the remaining $334M is tied to future performance metrics. For context, Voodoo’s last reported valuation was €1.7B in 2021, so this is a sizable deal that showcases Voodoo’s evolved thinking. BeReal is a unique blend of photo sharing and social networking: Every day, users take a picture using both the front and back cameras of their phone and share it with their friends. Despite achieving 125M lifetime downloads, BeReal has not yet introduced any monetization strategies and has been fully dependent on venture capital financing. In its latest valuation round in 2022, BeReal was valued at roughly $600M; the company has raised $90M total to date. What could this mean for Voodoo's future strategy? Delete your emails. All of them. But not one by one. Open the email management console for the whole team and click on DELETE. Precise, efficient. At least 100 GB purged. According to Ademe (Ademe is the French agency for Ecological Transition), you'll have saved at least 1 Kg of CO2. ... that is, if the entire team continues to operate without an alternative solution for ONE YEAR, of course. No emails. Not ever. Use nothing instead. It's not easy, is it? Alternatively, to be even more effective: the next time you want beef, don't have any. A single meal without beef is equivalent to 7 kg of CO2 not released into the atmosphere. It's 7 times more effective. For an "effort" of just 30 minutes. --- Of course, if you want to delete e-mails, but ESPECIALLY if you want to unsubscribe from numerous mailing lists so that you no longer receive them, don't hesitate to do so. But if you can spare 3 hours for digital housework, you also have 3 hours to think about your eating habits and try to reduce your consumption of beef, or even meat altogether. You wanna know how startup funding is going on right now in Belgium 🇧🇪 ? 🔮 I shared with Maxime SAMAIN (L'Echo) my point of view on that matter. 🦄 < >🐌 Article here: https://lnkd.in/e9qbCKKX Discover my take on the situation in 4 points: 1️⃣ More experienced 🐼 Belgium's startup scene boomed around 2015. These early-stage investors, the Business Angels, have gained experience through their investments made between 2015 and 2020. This newfound expertise makes them more rigorous in their analysis and more demanding of startups, ultimately limiting funding for a select few. 2️⃣ Investment shift ↩ The 2022 inflation surge reshaped investor mindsets and expectations. This trend solidified in 2023, becoming the "new normal." Consequently, 2024 witnessed a significant decline in funding for startups lacking a clear path to profitability. 3️⃣ Cycle ♻ The pre-pandemic boom in startups (around 2020) is now experiencing its first wave of bankruptcies. This has understandably shaken some Business Angels' confidence. While this cycle is natural, fear currently dominates investment decisions for many. 4️⃣ Post trauma 🤕 We are in a “post trauma” period. The above elements are making Business Angels much more risk averse. To restore confidence, we need to see successful Belgian 🇧🇪 startups emerge. It's like a Doctolib for beauty salons, replacing the old paper appointment book with a slick online system. Here's the cool part: 1️⃣No More Commissions! Unlike other services, Planity charges a flat monthly fee (around €69) instead of taking a cut of each appointment. This makes it more budget-friendly for salons, especially with repeat customers. 2️⃣All-in-One Powerhouse! Planity goes beyond booking. It helps salons manage schedules, staff hours, vacations, and even payroll information! Plus, it sends appointment reminders and keeps track of waiting lists. 3️⃣Going Cashless (Optional): For an extra fee, salons can use Planity as their point-of-sale system too. This adds payment processing through Stripe, making everything super streamlined. Planity is already a hit in France with over 40,000 beauty salons using it! They're also expanding to Belgium and Germany, and with this recent €45 million investment, they're setting their sights on even more countries.
