France’s 3rd largest Mediterranean port. New deep-sea infrastructure (-16 m) - Port of the Energy transition.
À propos
The port of Port-La Nouvelle is a French port in the Mediterranean that is transforming itself into a major port for the energy transition. A new deep-sea infrastructure is currently under construction. It will increase the existing traffic and expand into new activities like those related to marine renewables. The port will increase from 60 to 210 hectares and water depth will reach 16 m to accommodate ships up to 60 to 80,000 dwt. A construction site of 7 hectares dedicated to the floating offshore wind farms industry is already active. It will expand to 40-44 hectares to serve the future generations of floating wind turbines. Port-La Nouvelle will also be a major port for green hydrogen. The Hyd'occ plant will be delivered end 2024. It will produce renewable hydrogen on a massive scale to meet local needs for heavy mobility, industry and power generation. Operations will begin in 2025 with 3,000 tonnes/year. By 2030, the unit will produce 6,000 tonnes (50 MW). Regarding the dry bulk, liquid bulk and breakbulk activities, the corresponding terminals will be operative in 2026. Port-La Nouvelle thus intends to amplify its logistics role while taking up the challenge of decarbonization. The Port is owned by the Region Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée, second largest region in France. The Region has entrusted the port concession to the SEMOP, a semi-public Company. The SEMOP brings together the public actors (49%) such as the Region Occitanie and the Banque des Territoires with a group of private shareholders (51%). This private consortium consists of DEME CONCESSIONS (European operator of port concessions), EUROPORTS (international group of terminal operators), PMV (investment funds), QAIR (independent producer of renewable electricity) and the AUDE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. This organization is a new model of public/private governance in France. Port-La Nouvelle is the 1st French Port to be privately managed.

The first blades manufactured by Vestas for the pilot wind farms (Eolmed and LES EOLIENNES FLOTTANTES DU GOLFE DU LION) have arrived at Port of Port-La Nouvelle ! The unloading operations carried out by Euroports have begun at the terminal dedicated to floating wind energy. This is a first in France, as these are the largest wind turbines ever installed, marking the start of the first port operations for 10 MW turbines. The next vessel of this type, equipped with blades and turbines, is scheduled for late summer. #PortOfPortLaNouvelle #EUROPORTS #eolienflottant #fermespilotes #Mammoet #Eolmed #EFGL #Vestas

Around 80% of the world's offshore wind resource potential is in waters deeper than 60 metres, where fixed-bottom wind turbines are not a viable option. Thus, #floating wind turbines could shape the future of #wind energy. However, investment and development of #ports infrastructure is a central requirement to meet the planned pipeline of floating offshore wind projects. This includes the potential fabrication and assembly of substructures at quayside and selected turbine installation methodology. Port development also needs to address O&M needs, which may require tow-to-port (servicing turbines back at port) given the challenging conditions further offshore. Today at Port of Port-La Nouvelle the WindEurope Offshore Wind Ports Platform met together with the broader supply chain to understand and overcome challenges facing the success of floating offshore wind. Thank you Thomas Debize, Julien Ciglar and Laurie Lanovaz for your warm welcome and hospitality ! Thank you Jelle Schepens, Jeremy de Barbarin, Antoine LEFEVRE, David Filiol, Valentine Declerck, Christophe Desaubliaux, Johannes Gantenbein, Karen Cannenterre, CFA and Alexio Picco for generously sharing your knowledge and expertise in the implementation and funding of floating offshore wind projects! And thank you to all the participants for contributing to a truly engaging and enlightening meeting for all of us!

#PortOfPortLaNouvelle #EolienFlottant
