🌲🔑 Reforestation can be key in helping communities adapt to climate-related floods and landslides. In Kasese, Uganda, the impacts of climate change are very real. Since the 1960s, average temperatures have increased by 1.3°C and the #Rwenzori Mountain Range, in the northwest of the region, lost 49% of its permanent ice caps between 1987 and 2003. The ice is expected to completely disappear by the 2040s, with huge implications for the region’s water system. The #Nyamwamba River, fed by the melting glaciers, has become volatile. Frequently bursting its banks, the resulting flooding has destroyed homes and vital infrastructure. In March 2020, 25,000 homes were destroyed in a single day. Meanwhile, the tropical heat and humidity in the region are contributing to frequent extreme rainfall, causing devastating landslides; the water cycle is out of control. Deforestation has made this worse. Rapid population growth, unregulated timber harvesting and a reliance on wood for fuel have put the ecosystem under pressure, leading to rapid forest loss. Reforestation can mop up some of these impacts, with trees absorbing excess water and helping root soil in place. The Municipality and District of #Kasese have devised a comprehensive plan for reforestation across 30,000+ hectares. The aim is to mitigate flood risk by planting trees and establishing agroforestry in strategic areas throughout Kasese, including riverbanks, urban spaces, and nearby hills, to adapt the landscape. These NBI interventions also contribute additional benefits to people and planet, such as job creation, improved health, carbon sequestration, habitats for biodiversity, and avoided soil erosion. 💡 Our assessment shows that this nature-based approach to reducing flood and landslide risk would generate total net benefits of USD 69.1 million, with every dollar invested yielding over USD 5 in returns for society. 🔎 Read our new report: https://lnkd.in/edfZtgPU 👀 View our photo story: https://lnkd.in/eKJARKcV Written by Ronja Bechauf, Henri Contor and Marco Guzzetti. 🌟 FMDV in Asia: Another exciting update from Smart Green ASEAN Cities (#SGAC) Programme! 🏙️ Conducted as the third Deep Dive Masterclass, the #SGAC Deep Dive #3 Masterclass focused on “De-Risking Smart Green Projects to Leverage Private Sectors Investment”, took place on Thursday, 25 April 2024. This session was conducted for 15 SGAC nominated cities -  #Luangprabang, #Calapan, #Banyuwangi, #SiemReap, #Sihanoukville, #Seremban, #Kuantan, #Phitsanulok, #PuertoPrincesa, #Yala, #NakhonSawan, #Kaysonephomvihane, #Banyumas, #SamalIsland, and #Ipoh. It was attended by 30 participants from 13 #SGAC Nominated Cities across 6 ASEAN Member States. 👨🏫 The guest speaker, Andre Permana, PhD, Executive Director of Business at PT Penjaminan Infrastruktur Indonesia (Persero)/ Indonesia Infrastructure Guarantee Fund (IIGF), discussed the IIGF's role in Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) and addressing financing gaps in Indonesia's infrastructure development. He highlighted IIGF's unique features, such as providing government guarantees and project development assistance, which enhance project credibility and transparency, benefiting both the government and the public. He also detailed their guarantee structure, emphasizing that it primarily covers government risks, not investor risks, and is processed through the Government Contracting Agency (GCA). 👨🏫 As the expert, Faaris Pranawa, Director of Public Financing and Project Development at PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (Persero), discussed strategies to expedite financial backing for government initiatives, emphasizing the role of both public and private sectors. He also highlighted the process of identifying and mitigating risks in the PPP mechanism, focusing on risk assessment, allocation, and management strategies. He addressed the challenges and strategies involved in structuring visible projects, particularly in the context of sub-national governments and private sectors, using examples from Indonesia. He continued by discussing the importance of having consultations with relevant stakeholders or market sounding exercises, as it is crucial for cities to be able to structure bankable or feasible projects in-line with the private sector or financiers' objectives. He emphasized that finance options should be explored based on investment type and sub-national government income level or creditworthiness. Lastly, he delivered an illustrative approach on the quantitative risk analysis process, ranging from the identification, risk rating matrix, risk allocation, to risk management. 🌍 A big thank you to Bapak Andre and Bapak Faaris, along with the PT PII/ IIGF and PT SMI teams for your invaluable contributions, and kudos to #SGAC nominated cities for their continuous support and commitment! See you next Monday on 27 May at the “Closing Masterclass on Presenting Compelling Projects to Private Sectors and Financiers”! 🚀🗓️ #SmartGreenCities #SGACMasterclass #UrbanFinance #ASEAN #DeRisking
