Weather Outlook for the Week of July 16, 2024

With drought conditions persisting over the southern half of the state, some rainfall expected early in this period could help to cut into deficits.

A cold front will cross the state on Wednesday that will bring some relief from the heat and humidity observed recently along with widespread showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could be on the severe side, especially over southeastern PA, during the afternoon and evening. While this may bring some beneficial rain, more intense downpours may lead to runoff rather than soaking into the soil in areas where the ground is very dry. Some scattered showers or storms may linger into Thursday over far eastern PA, but the rest of the state will dry out. High pressure will bring an extended period of drier weather through the weekend with temperatures closer to seasonal levels as afternoon highs will be in the 80s and lows in the mid-50s to mid-60s. By early next week, another disturbance will bring the chance for showers and storms back to the state with some models hinting at an extended period of unsettled weather for much of the rest of the week.

Current long-range guidance indicates seasonal temperatures for the month of August while precipitation is favored to be above average over the eastern half of the state.
