Our Northwest Passage Ocean Science Expedition is now well underway as we sail across the North Atlantic towards Greenland on our 23-metre Bermuda Schooner, the “Abel Tasman”.
We departed Norway three weeks ago, and are now enjoying our 3rd gale with 70kph+ winds! The strong winds and big swell have made it challenging for our science data collection but we’ve succeeded in getting our devices and systems to work well for the #eDNA and #microplastics sampling, and recordings of underwater #acoustics, water temperature, salinity & CO2 concentration levels.
In addition to our science data, this expedition is a "Journey through the Arctic Tipping Points" - the very first of its kind. We’re exploring these Tipping Points to better understand how they interact with each other and to help build awareness of their implications for our planet and on humanity.
We have a talented core crew of 9 onboard - filmmakers, adventurers, storytellers, artists, and young scientists - and we’re using a variety of media to bring these Tipping Points and the fragility of the Arctic to light to key audiences. Business and finance is one of our target audiences.
The crew onboard include: Isak Rockström, Alex Rockström, the Emmy award-winning film producer Sylvestre Campe, Cléo Campe, Karina Oliani, Kester Haynes, Sebastian Sanchez, Ramon Gonçalves, Meg O'Hara, and Rakel Thorell. Sylvestre and executive film producer Gustavo Gama Rodrigues at MEDIAetc are creating a 6-part series to be broadcast in Brazil by Canal OFF.
I’m delighted that the leading earth systems scientist and Director of the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Professor Johan Rockström, is our Patron & Science Advisor.
Our website has some great dynamic maps that enable you to live track our journey https://lnkd.in/e-bzz5MT
Thank you to our core Sponsor (Mercuria), Science & Impact partners (NatureMetrics, The Ocean Race, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, The Villars Institute), and our many Equipment Suppliers & Supporters (including Houdini Sportswear, Shackleton, Sylvania, Thesus, SailProof, Ocean Bottle, ZeroSixZero, and our creative communications agency, MSQ/Sustain), all of whom have made this expedition possible.
There is much more to come … we plan to arrive in Alaska in late September, so we have 3 more months of sailing, exploration, science, learning, adventure, wilderness, wildlife, sealife, teamwork and camaraderie ahead of us! Please do join us on our journey to learn about the Arctic Tipping Points and the science work we're doing, and to share your own insights.
