On 18 May 2024, a giant superbolide overflew the Iberian peninsula ☄️ A team led by Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC) has reconstructed the trajectory of the meteoroid and concluded that its most likely source is the Jupiter-family comet region. The meteoroid was registered from space and by several stations from the Spanish Meteor Network (SPMN) allowing ICE-CSIC and Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya - IEEC researchers to compute its atmospheric trajectory and heliocentric orbit. 📹Trajectory of SPMN180524F superbolide / Pau Grèbol Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dET8-pqN
Sobre nosotros
The Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC) pertains to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and is affiliated with the Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya (IEEC). Officially created in 2008, ICE engages in theoretical and observational research across disciplines, including fundamental physics, astrophysics, planetary and Earth sciences. The institute also develops theoretical models, as well as instrumentation and technology for space and ground-based missions and experiments. ICE has about 90 members, two departments (Astrophysics & Planetary Sciences, and Cosmology & Fundamental Physics) and an Advanced Engineering Unit running 7 laboratories. The institute has obtained the María de Maeztu seal of excellence for the period 2022 – 2025.

🗞️ NASA's #DARTmission captures the Didymos binary asteroid system in high resolution The work, published in five articles in Nature Communications, studies the geology and origin of this binary asteroid system close to Earth. The observations identified 16 and 22 plausible craters on Didymos and Dimorphos, respectively. The analyses of the surface strengths and the number of craters allowed the team to constrain that Didymos surface is between 40 and 130 times older than its satellite Dimorphos.

🪐 Gliese 12 b, an intriguing Earth-sized world discovered! It is only 40 light-years away and it's a unique candidate for further atmospheric study that may help unlock some aspects of our own solar system’s evolution. 📄 Researchers from Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC), Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya - IEEC and Centro de Astrobiología (CAB), CSIC-INTA, CSIC, have participated in this research, whose results appear in the specialized journal The Astrophysical Journal Letters. https://lnkd.in/dHwinXme

🔭 ESA’s Euclid mission celebrates first science with five unprecedented new views of the Universe! 📰 The Euclid consortium, in which Spain has a prominent role, announces the release of its first papers. Spain is hugely involved in the mission, with a prominent role in the consortium that has led the mission from its origin. The Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC), the IFAE and the Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya - IEEC have been involved since 2006 in the initial concepts of the mission and have been responsible for the design, construction, assembly and validation tests of the Filter Wheel Assembly (FWA) of the NISP instrument. Together with PIC, they are responsible for the cosmological simulation effort in the Euclid mission. The Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena, in collaboration with the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), has been responsible for the design, construction and validation of the control electronics of the NISP Instrument. https://lnkd.in/dkEaMBad
