One of the most historic sites in Spain, Girona lies in northeast Catalonia, just 99 km (62 mi) from Barcelona. Salou, on the Costa Dorada, nestles between quaint Cambrils and calm La Pineda. Just seven miles south of elegant Tarragona, the compact resort town is a family favourite, due in no small part to the existence of Port Aventura and Aquopolis theme parks. Figueres is the birthplace of Salvador Dali and home to the Dali Museum, one of the most-visited Spanish museums. Not surprisingly, it is the place for the lovers of fine art. Close to the border with France, this Catalan city offers great food, wine, and beaches. Figueres is just 15 minutes by car or 25 minutes by train from the beaches of Costa Brava. Not as touristy as Barcelona, the city offers a relaxing atmosphere, quiet cafes, an historic Old Town and square, and even a castle.

You’ll find vineyards and olive groves in Bardolino, as well as beaches on beautiful Lake Garda. This town isn’t as popular as other area resort towns, so you shouldn’t find huge crowds here (except perhaps during the local olive oil and wine festival in late September and October). If you’re travelling with kids, make a beeline for the Gardaland and Aqua Paradise amusement parks.

On the south coast of the Baltic Sea lies Kolobrzeg, a rare combination of beachy atmosphere and medieval architecture. Founded during the Middle Ages, the city survived the Thirty Years’ War and an invasion by Napoleon, but was devastated by WWII. Today, it’s a seaside spa destination that is also popular with outdoor adventurists, particularly for biking the European Route of Brick Gothic. Visit the lighthouse overlooking the River Parseta, stroll the promenade along Kolobrzeg Pier, or visit one of the area’s many wellness centers.

Cesme attracts all types of surfers from all over the world: wind surfers, kite surfers, surf surfers. If you can surf it, you’ll probably want to surf it in Cesme. This resort town on the Aegean Coast is all about the water. Even the 16th-century Cesme Castle is a stone’s throw from the sapphire sea. The beaches are golden, the ocean is warm, and the atmosphere is posh but friendly.

Mombasa, with a population of 900,000, is no sleepy seaside village. Its beachfront hotels appeal to travellers in search of sun, sand and surf, while its Arab, Indian and colonial European heritage makes for a wide variety of sights to see. Can't find a taxi? Travel by tuk-tuk, a three-wheeled auto rickshaw.
