Siemens Financial Services in Singapore - Waterway Cleanup Activity in July Time for #sfs4good! This year we are excited to partner with the Waterways Watch Society a non-profit environmental organization in Singapore who are committed to fostering appreciation and promoting conservation of the environment. 🚣🏽 More than 20 SFS colleagues boarded six pedal boats and went out to the Kallang River to clean up the reservoir whilst also learning about the impacts of litter on our fresh water and wildlife resources. While “fishing” for trash, the teams managed to clear candy wrappers, plastic straws, beer cans, a bicycle padlock, multiple single plastics, and a Styrofoam box which still contained food remains! 🚰 We learnt how waterway systems within the reservoirs create a large impact in the catchment areas of water recycling systems in Singapore. Rainwater collected in the reservoirs are piped to water treatment plants where it is processed into potable water. Surface water from major waterways, such as Singapore River, Kallang River and Rochor Canal, all flow into the Marina Reservoir, a large water barrage. 🌊 It remains important to help our rivers and reservoirs be cleared from litter to achieve a healthier, unpolluted environment with less or no trash, especially single-use plastic items. Wildlife incuding birds, fish, otters and many more animals live in these waterways. 🛀 Finally, the SFS team learnt the importance of conserving the water used in daily life as one of the goals of the Singapore Green Plan 2030, is to reduce household water consumption to 130 litres per person per day. The use of water in a responsible way only require small actions, but collectively small changes can make a big difference in our environment and simple daily habits such as reusing water and making a more conscious effort to purchase water-efficient fittings and appliances, can help us to conserve water, a scarce and precious resource in Singapore. 🗑️#TeamSFS collected almost 40kg of waste!
