Last week at #SB60 - a conference held at Bonn that marks the midpoint to #COP29 - Solutions for Our Climate (기후솔루션), Environmental Paper Network Biomass Action Network (BAN), Colectivo Viento Sur, EEECHO, Global Forest Coalition, and Wild Europe co-organized an event addressing the risks of big #biomass in our pathway to achieving the global renewables target. Some key takeaways:  🔷 International carbon accounting rules must be revised to reflect the real emissions of forest biomass, which is falsely regarded as carbon neutral.   🔷 Climate policies that support forest biomass must be scrapped. For instance, South Korea subsidizes biomass energy more than solar and wind.  🔷 Forest biomass power often leads to land-grabbing from Indigenous and local communities, and destroys existing natural forests and biodiversity.   🔷 Biomass must not be part of the global effort to triple renewable energy.   🔷 We must prioritize shifting subsidies from forest biomass to truly clean renewables, supporting efforts to control demand and fostering carbon absorbent ecosystems.    It’s time to face the truth about biomass and go for a cleaner and healthier energy future. 👉 Explore the issue further in our latest issue brief: https://lnkd.in/grC5suD7

HAMERKOP was recently featured in Volume 2 of Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA)’s Digital Magazine “Vantage Point: Perspectives on Clean Cooking” 👇 According to the CCA… “Despite recent growth, there remains significant potential for carbon markets to deliver increased climate finance to the clean cooking sector… Less than 5% of carbon credits generated in the voluntary carbon market are from clean cooking, while fewer than 10 project developers dominate the flow of clean cooking credits.” 🚀 To address this, HAMERKOP has helped the CCA with their Venture Accelerator programme in West Africa. This means providing early stage businesses with the support, tools, and expertise they needed to develop carbon finance projects. 🇬🇭 Last year we traveled to Accra, Ghana to support the Venture Accelerator with our technical expertise at an inaugural capacity building boot camp ✅ It is a pleasure bringing our skills around the world to support the growth of impactful initiatives. 🌍 From Waste to Worth: Freezing Fresh Meat to Save Resources 🥩 Have you seen the latest initiative to combat food waste? Selected fresh meat products are now being offered frozen on their expiration date at a reduced price at Coop. This approach extends the products' shelf life by another 90 days. However, I think it's crucial to inform customers that these products are completely safe. The initiative is supported by updated legal regulations from the Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs. Proper freezing ensures the meat remains fresh and safe for consumption. As the first German partner, we’ve recently joined the newly founded NbS Coalition, an alliance of companies and initiatives highly motivated and dedicated to drive climate action with nature-based solutions (#NbS). Shaping frameworks at European level like the #CRCF to fully utilize the potential of NbS as integral part to mitigate climate change is one common goal of the NbS Coalition. 🌍 🚨 The urgency is clear: we will NOT meet the 1.5-degree Celsius target without leveraging existing nature-based solutions, which can immediately and relatively cheaply increase carbon storage capacity. Reducing emissions is essential, but equally important is removing carbon from the atmosphere to achieve this target by 2050. According to the International Panel on Climate Change (#IPCC), 6 Gt CO2 must be removed per year by 2050. Forests play a crucial role in this endeavor and could contribute even more through data-based, high-quality climate projects funded through the Voluntary Carbon Market. 🌳 Thank you to all the trailblazers leading the way. Let's stop repackaging conventional, degenerative agriculture as "climate-smart". Agroecology, Regenerative and Organic agriculture (including permaculture, biodynamic) are the only paradigms that are going to allow us to adapt to and mitigate climate change and its effects on smallholder farmer yields, food security, livelihoods, hunger, migration, etc. Below is how.

Despite global commitments to halt #deforestation by 2030, only eight of the top 20 countries with highest rate of tropical deforestation have quantified targets on forests in their national #climate action plans, also known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). This is one of the key findings of the UN-REDD report “Raising ambition, accelerating action: Towards enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions for forests,": https://lnkd.in/eKrzVU2c The report reveals a major gap in #forest protection, management and restoration in current NDCs, which outline plans to adapt to and mitigate climate change. Analysed by #climate experts at UN Environment Programme, the report shows that current NDC pledges submitted between 2017–2023 do not meet the global ambition to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030. While 11 of the NDCs contain quantified targets relating to afforestation and #reforestation, mitigating climate change requires reducing deforestation first. To further harmonize national efforts, it is also crucial for NDCs to integrate existing national strategies to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, which 15 of the 20 countries have adopted. Given the role of forests in regulating #hydrological cycles, buffering #temperature extremes, preventing extreme #weather events, and protecting #biodiversity and human health, the ambition to end deforestation is essential for humanity to avoid tremendous risks to us, our planet and the life it supports. Yet, the report released today shows that global deforestation rates continued to increase, notwithstanding a recent decline in Brazil.
