Recent geopolitical events, particularly the war in Ukraine, have significantly impacted the global fertilizer market. Russia is a major supplier of nitrogen fertilizers, and with its exports disrupted, there are price volatility and supply shortages that have adversely affected farmers in vulnerable regions of Africa and Latin America. Does this highlight the urgent need for these countries to develop local fertilizer production capabilities with a lower carbon footprint? This discussion will explore the potential of green hydrogen in Africa and Latin America, which can be transformed into green ammonia and then into nitrogen fertilizers. This offers a promising solution in the long term to strengthen food security, reduce dependency on imports, foster low-carbon industrialization, and, in case of Latin America, bolster its role as an important global producer and exporter of food staples. Guest Speaker: Adrian Duhalt, Nonresident Scholar at Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy & Southern Methodist University's Texas-Mexico Center. Adrian worked as a Research Scholar at the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia Universityโs School of International and Public Affairs. His professional and research interests sit at the junction between political economy and development issues concerning the energy sector in Mexico, the US and Latin America. Specifically, his research projects have focused on natural gas and petrochemicals, and he published articles and reports on topics such as the ammonia-fertilizer value chain, the energy sector liberalization in Mexico, social conflict in energy infrastructure projects, and NOCs. More recently, Adrian has turned his attention to the energy-food security nexus, particularly focusing on the development of low-carbon fertilizers and how this represents a valuable opportunity for developing countries. I'm looking for guests for my podcast WattsUpWithStartups The holiday season is here, and a new season of WattsUpWithStartups is in the making! Iโd like to invite founders and investors, who are scaling green technologies. In the new season, I want to go deeper into the nuances of scaling Greentech: 1. The strategy and the business plan. How do you come up with it? What tools and tricks do you use? What is your checklist? 2. Finding clients, who are ok with quality problems and the price of the first products. What are your protocols and procedures? 3. Finding Investors, who are ok with founders keeping their independence and controlling share. 4. Manufacturing in as lean a way as possible. Do you outsource, and if yes, how do you select your service providers? 5. Building a resilient Supply chain, that can withstand pandemics and armed conflicts 6. Navigating Corporate governance in a way, that the Board of Directors provides support and guidance, rather than a ton of paperwork. 7. How to hire people fast and have a long reserve bench? 8. Managing the team to keep the stress levels manageable and communications open and clear. 9. Training the team constantly as the product and processes are evolving quickly. In each online interview, I will pick a few of these topics to discuss in detail. If you want to share your experience, or you know someone who could, please message me! ๐Watch here: https://lnkd.in/dU8XkQfB ๐งListen here: https://lnkd.in/dTSiiFGz Have a great weekend! Sometimes, you still hear opinions that electric cars are not environmentally friendly and that their emissions are greater than those of cars with internal combustion engines, if you take into account the production of batteries. To end this debate, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has released the ๐๐ ๐๐ข๐๐ ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ (https://lnkd.in/gZKqcmGk). By changing the region, vehicle size, driving profile, and average daily mileage, you can compare the total emissions for an ICE, hybrid, or EV for the needed lifecycle. What is the breakdown of total emissions? For an ICE car, this is car production, energy production (well-to-tank), and fuel combustion (tank-to-wheel). For a hybrid โ car, energy and battery production, and combustion. For an EV โ car and battery production, and energy production. The larger the car, the higher the daily mileage, and the faster the total emissions of an ICE car will exceed those of an EV since emissions from burning gasoline or diesel offset the initial emissions from producing the EV battery. For example, according to average world data, if you drive an average of 33 km per day in the city commuter cycle for a medium-sized car, in terms of CO2-eq emissions, an electric car will become more profitable than an ICE car within a year and a half and than a hybrid after 2.5 years. If you drive 90 km a day, already in the first year the total emissions from operating an EV will be lower than from a hybrid or, especially, an ICE car. The calculator shows that for a medium-sized car with the smallest daily mileage of 17 km and a minimum life cycle of 5 years, an EV becomes more beneficial in terms of emissions than a conventional car. Each of us has the power to make informed and conscious decisions to strive for a sustainable lifestyle!
