Welcome to the rrreefs workshop, how to build a reef 🤿🧱🪸 Our first workshop was an opportunity to present the theory behind building a reef, combined with the practical skills needed to build a reef at one of our sites across the world 🌍 The workshop was delivered to employees, volunteers and #rrreefers to get their feedback on the programme and how it could be improved and adapted prior to teaching our partners in the field. The morning session focused on all the components you need to build a reef, and the afternoon gave everyone the chance to build mini reefs using 3D printed replica parts. Our reefs are designed to be flexible and adaptive to the conditions inside the build site, this is extremely important to preserve and regenerate the living reefs in the surrounding area. The reef structure, including height is also important as this creates a variety of different conditions and habitats for corals to grow and marine life to thrive 🪸🐡🐙🐠 Everyone left the workshop with a smile on their face and a real understanding of what goes into building a #rrreefs reef. Thanks to Marie Griesmar Mauro Bischoff and Hanna Kuhfuss for delivering such an inspiring day 😀 The list of countries where we can build is growing all the time, this presents plenty of opportunities to partner with us and save coral reefs. Please get in touch if you or your business would like to sponsor a reef or become part of a community reef in 2024/2025. #savethereef #marinelife #oceandecade #SDG14 #climateaction #climatechange #biodiversity #workshop

We rebuild coral reefs. Sustainably. Scientifically. With artistic vision. Our innovative, modular structures are designed to restore and promote reef life and serve as coastal protection barriers. Our reefs recreate the lost 3D-framework of a damaged reef, restoring reef ecosystem services such as fish stocks, tourism, biodiversity, and coastal protection. We achieve this goal by combining artistic vision with scientific rigor, and the newest 3D printing technologies.

We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to all the employees at Geistlich Pharma who walked, ran, and cycled 4,434 Kilometers to help rebuild and regenerate #coralreefs 🚶♂️🏃♀️🚴 The dedicated team from across the globe raised a total of $26,208 to support our project and take us 1 step closer to our mission of regenerating 1% of coastal coral reefs by 2034. 🐠🪸 The donation will extend the size of our next community reef and increase the biodiversity and marine life it generates. A huge thank you to everyone who participated in making a difference! 🙏🫶 #rrreefs #savethereef #marinelife #Geistlich #geistlichpharma #running Marie Griesmar Hanna Kuhfuss Diego Gabathuler

The 3-dimensional structure provided by shallow-water tropical #coralreefs serves as vital (micro-)habitat for a vast variety of marine organisms – in fact an estimated 25% of all marine biodiversity. Yet, coral reefs are declining at unprecedented rates worldwide through anthropogenic impacts. Dead corals quickly degrade to rubble, involving the loss of essential structural complexity. rrreefs aims to rebuild crucial habitat for reef-dwelling organisms by installing stable, modular artificial reef structures in places where natural reefs are threatened or have been destroyed 🧱🤿 Preliminary data from a project at San Andrés Island in Columbia shows that fish abundance and diversity reach levels of nearby natural reefs within three months of installation. We continuously strive to improve our structures to enhance fish, coral, and invertebrate recruitment via the provision of suitable micro-habitat 🐠🪸🐙 Stay tuned for more developments. #rrreefs #savethereef #marinelife #climateaction #biodiversity #marineecologist #fish

Historic win for Europe’s nature: the #NatureRestorationLaw has been adopted by the European Union! This week, EU Member States have approved the game-changing law for Europe's degraded ecosystems – 80 % of which are currently in poor condition. The Nature Restoration Law contains specific targets to: 🌿 Restore at least 20 % of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030 🌊 Regenerate marine habitats such as seagrass beds 🦉 Improve biodiverse habitats on a large scale 👉 Learn more about the legislation here: https://lnkd.in/eA7bW68N It is the first comprehensive, continent-wide law of its kind. Let's keep fighting to protect our planet, oceans and cute #pufferfish like this guy below! 🐡 P.S. Did you know that pufferfish are famous for two things: their amazing ability to inflate, and the fact that eating one can easily kill you?

🐋 How can we accelerate #Ocean #Restoration? 🐋 Charles Clover wrote a great book titled "REWILDING THE SEA". The environmental journalist co-founded Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE), and they are tirelessly working to create marine reserves to protect wild life in the oceans. With remarkable results. No spoiler - read the book. 🐋 It is not debatable that we need to protect more and more areas in the ocean to allow #nature to do its magic and fill the ocean with life once more. 🐋 And we as solution providers for active nature restoration can use our projects and local stakeholder ecosystems to protect the sea around our sites and have an impact beyond individual projects. Our Co-Founder Dr. Ulrike Pfreundt will be on the panel to discuss synergies between #coral 🪸 and #mangrove 🌱restoration, share how we help create #MPAs (marine protected areas), and about new ideas to #finance all of this with James Morris from BLUE, Adonai Herrera-Martinez from EBRD and Klaas de Vos. Join the panel at OCEANOVATION on Wednesday, 19th June, at 9:30 am in The Hague. 📷 picture by Juanita Escobar (@juanitafotografa on Instagram) #rrreefs #savethereef #marinelife #oceandecade #SDG14 #climateaction #climatechange #biodiversity

We support people locally and globally 😃🫶 Last week our team attended the ZHdK Zürcher Hochschule der Künste in Zurich to see the amazing work that 2 students had created for their design and scientific visualisation thesis. Emilia Lendi and Cassandre Wuarchoz both chose to base their work on #coralrestoration 🪸🐠 Emilia created add ons, formed from a sand cast which hooks onto our #3Dprinted reef system. The add ons are designed for coral nursing which enables coral fragments to grow and colonise across the reef. Emelia’s hooks were tested in Lake Zurich before being used on our latest reef build in Ecuador. Mauro Bischoff supported Emelia across the project by sharing his knowledge of design and engineering, he also taught Emelia to dive which was another highlight for her 🤿 Cassandre took a different approach to her work by creating a beautiful animation that showcases the life of a coral from its larval stage to its final form as a coral. Clone, Create, Cnidaria features hand drawn images brought to life using a frame-by-frame style. The animation was designed to inspire the viewer through emotions to think about their surroundings and take care of their environment 🎨👩🎨 Marie Griesmar mentored Cassandre throughout her project by sharing her love for art and design as well as her expertise from the art industry. Cassandre worked at rrreefs as a volunteer for 7 months in 2023 and we are over the moon to welcome her back as a paid intern in July 🥳 The exhibition is definitely worth a visit, and it runs until the 21st of June at #ZHdk Pfingsweidstrasse 196, 8005 Zurich. #rrreefs #savethereef #marinelife #oceandecade #ocean #SDG14 #climateaction #climatechange #biodiversity
