“I had an opportunity to work with Rachel when I first started in the market research industry. She embraces the values of her job to the fullest and is committed to the needs of her clients. Her attention to detail is unmatched, be it the design of the project, deliverables on the project or ethical conduct of research. She has been a caring colleague to me and never hesitated to share her wisdom to help me out. I could not have asked for a better colleague to begin my journey in the research industry.”

What do you do if your written communication skills need a boost?
Improve your writing by dividing it into three steps: 1. Planning and outlining 2. Writing 3. Revision Having a clear, fleshed out outline can help you ensure your writing is well organized and proceeds logically. Spending time on a good outline can also help you improve the efficiency of your writing and reduce frustration. Take a break between writing and editing, and when editing, do your best to look at your writing with fresh eyes. Leverage online tools like Grammarly to identify spelling, grammar, and other issues, and don’t forget to read your piece out loud: if you have to pause and think, you probably need to edit for clarity.

How can you develop a critical eye for your own writing?
To help develop a critical eye, leave some space between the writing and editing process. Rather than immediately editing your drafts, leave enough time in your review process to step away for a day or two and come back with fresh eyes. This helps add a bit of emotional distance and helps you better place yourself in the shoes of a reader who is reading your piece for the first time. In addition, a fresh brain during editing can help you flag plot holes, identify where further development is needed, and see where you can cut what’s redundant.

What do you do if your client or editor disagrees with your writing style?
A great way to avoid this challenge in the first place is to agree on writing style before crafting your piece. If working with a client, asking if they have an existing brand tone and voice or style guide (or ideally, both, is a great way to start). This way, you can be sure your writing fits well with their established branding. These guides are also great for editors to work from, as they ensure everyone (writer, editor, client, etc.) is on the same page and pieces don’t need to be significantly reworked for tone and voice at a later stage. If guides aren’t available, asking a few targeted questions to your client about the type of voice, tone, and style they’re looking for definitely goes a long way (check online for resources!).
