What do you do if your client or editor disagrees with your writing style?

If someone, like a client or an editor, doesn't like how you write, make sure to hear them out. Maybe they have a good reason or advice. Like, if they say your writing is too casual, they're probably just looking for something more formal. Listening to them doesn't mean you have to lose your style – it just means you're willing to adjust to fit the job or audience better.

Listen to their concerns first. Ask for specifics, and discuss. Propose solutions and reflect on the suggestions given. Implement changes suggested. Consider audience needs and be flexible. If guides aren’t available, asking a few targeted questions to your client about the type of voice, tone, and style they’re looking for definitely goes a long way (check online for resources!).

If you're a freelance writer, remember that clients have hired you for *your* expertise and style. Of course, it's essential to be open to feedback and adapt within reason, especially during the onboarding period. But if you're going months and the partnership constantly experiences bottlenecks due to conflict in writing style, then it's probably not the best fit. Most partnerships will be great, but some won't work out and that's okay. Don't be afraid to walk away from an opportunity that isn't right for you, for a better one that is :)
