Democracy isn't just upheld during elections—it's a daily commitment across all levels of government. This insightful article by Neil Saravanamuttoo and Catherine McKenney underscores the critical role of local governments in safeguarding our democratic values. At City Hall, where most Canadians interact directly with government, ensuring accountability and meaningful engagement is paramount. It's here that community trust in democracy is built—or eroded. Municipal leaders play a pivotal role in upholding these norms, influencing how our democracy thrives. As we navigate challenges to democratic values, let's recognize the importance of robust public engagement and accountability at the local level. It's not just about services; it's about fostering a resilient democracy that serves all citizens. 🔗 Read more about how City Halls are on the front line of saving democracy. https://lnkd.in/duQbxnxJ #Democracy #LocalGovernment #PublicEngagement #PublicParticipation #CommunityLeadership #CommunityEngagement #IAP2Canada

Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day #NIPD2024, we celebrate the rich cultures and significant contributions of Indigenous peoples across Canada. This day also serves as a reminder of the ongoing reciprocal efforts to preserve and revitalize Indigenous languages—an essential part of cultural heritage and identity. Many Indigenous communities are actively engaged in language revitalization processes, tailored to their specific needs and desires. Focusing on language plays a crucial role in fostering meaningful engagement and supporting ongoing learning processes and revitalization projects within these communities. To support Indigenous language revitalization, the IAP2 Canada Indigenous Engagement Community of Practice has sourced some informative resources to help promote mutual understanding: 📚 The usage of Indigenous languages as a tool for meaningful engagement with northern Indigenous governments and communities (University of Calgary) 📚 Indigenous languages: Gateways to the world's cultural diversity (UNESCO) 📚 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Nation language resources (Government of Canada) 📚 How to learn an Indigenous language" (SFU’s Vancity Office of Community Engagement) These resources can be accessed via the IAP2 Canada Indigenous Engagement Community of Practice webpage: https://lnkd.in/ezxEEb-3 🌍 Land Acknowledgement: We acknowledge, from coast to coast to coast, the Indigenous people (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) of all the lands that we are on today. While IAP2 Canada is a virtual organization, it is important to acknowledge the lands which we each call home. This acknowledgment reaffirms our commitment and responsibility to improving relationships, understanding Indigenous peoples and cultures, acknowledging the impact of residential schools and colonialism on Indigenous families and communities, and moving forward in a spirit of reconciliation.
