  • Happy Tuesday! Here is this week’s :60 Seconds for Safety message, brought to you by our parent company, MYR Group. Equipment inspection is a critical aspect of safety culture. From heavy equipment vehicles to the smallest hand tools and all their related parts and accessories, everything we use needs to be in safe, working condition. Even a minor defect can create hazardous conditions. Whether you’re doing a walk-around of a forklift or looking over a hammer, you need to comprehensively check the equipment and use a questioning attitude throughout the inspection. Don’t underestimate the importance of checking over your tools and equipment before getting started! This proactive step helps protect you and your team members on the job. • Happy Tuesday! Here is this week’s :60 Seconds for Safety message, brought to you by our parent company, MYR Group. With 27 bones, 27 joints, 34 muscles, and hundreds of ligaments, tendons, blood vessels, and nerves, the human hand is a crucial tool not only on the job site, but in the day-to-day as well, so it’s crucial we protect our hands when we work. Doing so means: • Wearing the appropriate gloves for the task you are doing. MYR Group provides gloves for many different types of tasks, including cut-resistant, rubber, leather, high-voltage, and low-voltage gloves. • Ensuring your gloves fit correctly – not so tight that they restrict movement, but snug enough to be secure on your hands. • Not using your hands to remove things such as protruding nails or shards of glass without gloves, even when performing tasks that don’t require them. • Protecting your hands from environmental conditions, from cold weather that could lead to frostbite to hot weather that causes sweat and decreases your ability to grip objects. We use our hands all day every day, so we need to make sure we don't become complacent in protecting them. At Western Pacific, Safety is Life. #WesternPacific #MYRGroup #Safety #ElectricalConstruction #ConstructionSafety

  • Happy Tuesday! Here is this week’s :60 Seconds for Safety message, brought to you by our parent company, MYR Group. All accidents are preventable, and there are five levels of controls that we can use to address hazards, prevent accidents, and create the safest working environment possible. Keep the following "hierarchy of controls” in mind as you work: ‣ 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: the most effective hazard control. It means removing the hazard entirely. ‣ 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: replacing something that produces a hazard with something that either eliminates or reduces the hazard. ‣ 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: controls or modifications that reduce or prevent workers from encountering hazards. ‣ 𝗔𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘀: processes built into the work procedure that reduce exposure to hazards. ‣ 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗣𝗣𝗘): equipment such as safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, and ear plugs worn as a line of defense against hazards. Utilize these necessary precaution guidelines to maximize security on the job site and keep yourself and others safe. • Happy Tuesday! Here is this week’s :60 Seconds for Safety message, brought to you by our parent company, MYR Group. Whether you are working directly with or simply near chemicals, it’s important that you always take the proper precautions. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind: • Only people who have been trained on the proper use, transport, or disposal of chemicals should directly deal with them. • Always read labels or Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) before using a chemical, and wear the correct (and correctly fitting) PPE. • The correct storage and placement of chemicals – even in containers – is critical to keeping everyone on a jobsite safe. Keep all chemicals in their original container and ensure that all containers are labeled. You can protect yourself and your colleagues from these hazards by being diligent in properly handling the chemicals you work with. • Last month, we returned to Burnaby South Secondary School for another round of Bring Trades to School! After such a successful inaugural event, we couldn’t say no to another opportunity to form connections with up-and-coming tradespeople.    “I always see how excited they are as the project they are working on gets closer and closer to being complete,” said Tiffany Madden, a Western Pacific chargehand and volunteer at the event. “Their eyes light up when its complete and they get to see the big picture as a result of all the small steps they did.”    And the inspiration was reciprocal.    “It feels amazing and fills me with hope to see that youth are interested in the trades and learning a skill,” Madden said. “Mentorship is one of the aspects I love most about my job, so to see so many people - especially girls - interested makes me excited for the next few years of my career and hopefully having one of these youth end up on my site.”    Thanks to Burnaby South for another opportunity to create connections and empower the future people of trade!    #WesternPacific #MYRGroup #BringTradestoSchool #CreatingConnections

  • Happy Tuesday! Here is this week’s :60 Seconds for Safety message, brought to you by our parent company, MYR Group. Falls prevention and protection must be taken seriously at every job site, with every task, every day. Carefully following the safety principles, rules, and regulations around working at heights saves lives. Before beginning any task, take ample time to identify hazards. Make the necessary adjustments to the environment, your behavior, and your PPE to protect yourself and others from fall hazards. Even if you’re working at height frequently, you must never get complacent about the risks associated with doing so. By staying vigilant, you’re contributing to a safer job site for yourself and your team members.
