Canadian and U.S. fisheries have become more tropicalized over the past few decades. This can lead to significant changes in fisheries. Marine biologist Dr. Donna Dimarchopoulou recently collaborated with Dr. Heike Lotze and Dr. Boris Worm from Dalhousie University, along with Dr. Rubao Ji and Dr. Jesús Pineda from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, to assess the effects of ocean warming on fisheries catches in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. https://lnkd.in/eUSnugHa

How do earthquakes impact carbon storage in the #ocean? 🌊 Carbon can be captured from the environment and stored under the seafloor, preventing it from reaching the atmosphere and helping to slow #climatechange. However, seismic risk should be evaluated before selecting carbon storage sites to ensure the long-term safety. With funding from our Institute, Dr. Miao Zhang and his research team have successfully deployed 19 ocean bottom seismometers to monitor earthquakes that can impact potential carbon storage on the Scotian Shelf. “By understanding the seismic risks and fault dynamics, we can identify suitable and safe sites for carbon storage, ensuring the long-term stability and effectiveness of this climate mitigation strategy,” says Dr. Zhang. 🏷 Dalhousie University | Carbon Removal Canada

Researchers are becoming more aware of how #climatechange is impacting life underwater. Dr. Daniel Boyce, a research consultant with the United Nations and adjunct professor at Dalhousie University, is working with our Institute and Oceans North to quantify the risk that climate change poses to marine species in the Northwest Atlantic. Initial research shows that nearly half of fish stocks are at risk. Read more. ⬇ https://lnkd.in/dWshyFSq
