"Set to be one of North America’s biggest development sites, the project begs the question of whether such a large-scale project can truly meet the moment, in terms of what Toronto, and cities in general, need when social safety nets are fraying," writes Fast Company. Downsview today, is home to over 35,000 residents but is divided by roads, rail lines, and the former Downsview Airport/Bombardier Airbase. With the airbase ending its operations, the 520-acre site – roughly the same size as Toronto’s downtown – offers an immense opportunity for the rapidly growing city. Read the full feature of the Downsview Framework Plan in Fast Company below. The Downsview Framework Plan is done in collaboration with Northcrest Developments, Canada Lands Company / Société Immobilière du Canada, SLA, Urban Strategies Inc. and KPMB Architects.

The strength of our work lies in our collaborators. We are heartened to share that the Downsview Framework Plan, a joint effort between ourselves, Canada Lands Company, has received the 2024 AZURE Media People's Choice Award for Urban Design Unbuilt Developments. This recognition is a testament to the power of collaboration and shared vision. Working hand-in-hand with our exceptional partners, we have collectively envisioned the area’s lands as a future community that will support over 80,000 residents, generate more than 40,000 jobs, and feature 100 acres of vibrant new parkland. Built upon years of engagement, our collective vision will turn these largely vacant lands into a global model for sustainable urban development, focusing on low-carbon density, active mobility, and nature-based stormwater management systems. We’d like to thank all of our partners and collaborators: 📐 Design: Henning Larsen, KPMB Architects, SLA, Urban Strategies Inc. 🚗 Transportation: BA Consulting Group Ltd. 💡 Energy: Transsolar KlimaEngineering 🏗️ Municipal Infrastructure: Arup 🌱 Sustainability/Climate Resilience: Ramboll 📢 Public Engagement: Third Party Public, FUTURE SIMPLE STUDIO, Department of Words and Deeds 💬 Indigenous Engagement: Nbisiing Consulting Inc. 🤝 Equity Advisors: Monumental This plan has been a years-long labor of dedication and passion, and we are thrilled to receive this recognition from our industry peers. https://lnkd.in/gbmasJDv

We were thrilled to host the R.A.V.E. Institute's "R.A.V.E." at the Downsview Airport Lands during the Luminato Festival Toronto. Reimagining a decommissioned airport building, this immersive show combined our land’s innovative history with the vibrant energy of arts and culture, creating a truly one-of-a-kind experience. Seeing our lands evolve into a creativity hub has been exhilarating—it’s just a peek into exciting future possibilities. Thank you to the R.A.V.E. What does it mean to build a place for all? Meaningful conversations are happening across the country for National AccessAbility Week, calling for necessary action today. At Northcrest, as we lead the transformation of the 370-acre Downsview Airport Lands, our runway is much longer - to the tune of decades. With that, we look ahead, embracing the role that city-builders play in building more accessible spaces, and thereby cities. To us, smart urban planning and barrier-free design mean prioritizing accessibility at every touchpoint. With a major plot of land, we look ahead with great intentions and have the responsibility to get it right. The touchpoints are big and small, but top of mind are: 🦯 Emphasizing pedestrian-prioritized planning through wide sidewalks, pedestrian zones, curb design, safe crossings, traffic speeds, and ensuring that “pedestrians” is inclusive of a wide range of abilities for movement. 🌳 Embracing universal design principles to ensure that public spaces, buildings, and infrastructure is usable for people of all ages and abilities. 🧏 Visual and tactile wayfinding to create accessible navigation for all urban environments. ⛲ Multi-sensory urban spaces and events that engage people with diverse sensory abilities through features such as tactile art installations, fragrant gardens, and audible landmarks. 💬 Above all, we prioritize wide-reaching community engagement and consultation to ensure that their needs and perspectives are considered and incorporated into the design of public spaces and infrastructure. In a truly inclusive city, accessibility is seamless and ubiquitous. It's about more than compliance—when we make accessibility a priority, we build communities that are stronger and more connected. So, as we look out towards decades of change at the Downsview Airport Lands, we do so with the spirit of responsibility to create a space that is accessible and inclusive for all. We can’t wait to see these principles materialize and take shape on our lands. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ggiYQ6Jc #NationalAccessAbilityWeek
