The past few months have seen a lot of movement on decarbonizing aviation. With a busy travel season in full swing, we’ve put together a playlist of our favourite podcasts that will give you an inside look at how an industry that connects us all can fly towards net zero. As you hit the road or take to the skies this holiday season, have a listen to the following: • CE’s Anna Stukas sat down with Na'im Merchant on the Carbon Curve podcast for a deep dive on all things Direct Air Capture (DAC) and aviation, including how airlines are leaning in to kickstart DAC today. https://lnkd.in/g5yn9EpZ • For the SimpliFlying podcast, Shashank Nigam ✈ talks with CE’s Amy Ruddock and gets into the science of DAC and what it can do for aviation. https://lnkd.in/dphpHi3k • If you’re looking for more on the emerging DAC industry, The Economist's Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran reports in-person from the site of the first commercial facility to use CE’s technology, expected to be the largest in the world. Vijay gives listeners a good overview of the technology, as well as what needs to be done to scale (the section about DAC begins 10 min 55 seconds into the podcast). Lufthansa Group has become the latest airline to sign on for the Airbus Carbon Capture Offer. One of Europe’s largest airlines, Lufthansa joins All Nippon Airways, Air Canada and easyJet in adding durable carbon removal to their decarbonization portfolio, backed by Carbon Engineering’s Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology. Lufthansa has contracted to pre-purchase verified and durable carbon-removal credits for 40,000 tonnes of CO2, with credits supplied by our partner, 1PointFive. DAC is expected to play a critical key role in enabling airlines to decarbonize, both as a high-integrity form of carbon removal, and by scaling the atmospheric CO2 available as a feedstock for synthetic sustainable aviation fuel in the coming years. The Lufthansa Group joins Airbus Aircraft’s carbon-removal initiative🤝. It is considered a promising solution for reducing CO2 in the atmosphere: The so-called Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS) technology filters CO2 from the air and stores it permanently. The Lufthansa Group began exploring this innovative process at an early stage and sees it as a complementary instrument in its sustainability strategy.   The Lufthansa Group has now signed a contract with Airbus Aircraft on the pre-purchase of verified and durable carbon-removal credits of 40,000 tonnes of CO2. The carbon-removal credits will be issued by Airbus through its ACCO (Airbus Carbon Capture Offer) service. The certificates will be available from 2026 and an annual purchase of carbon-removal credits of 10,000 tonnes of CO2 has been agreed for four years. The signing of the contract follows a joint declaration of intent from 2022.         #MakeChangeFly   More information https://lnkd.in/eNtc4PuY

Air Canada has become the first North American airline to sign up for the Airbus carbon removal initiative, with removal credits supplied by 1PointFive using CE’s Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology. The announcement illustrates the role that DAC can play in airlines’ decarbonization portfolios, alongside emissions reductions such as sustainable aviation fuel, to help the industry achieve net zero emissions. Airlines across three continents have now embraced carbon dioxide removal backed by CE’s DAC technology to address residual emissions. We applaud Air Canada’s continued support of DAC, from their investment in the advancement of CE's DAC technology alongside Airbus in 2022, and now by participating in Airbus’ carbon capture offering. Representatives from Japanese shipping company NYK Line joined us at our Innovation Center in Squamish last week to learn more about Direct Air Capture (DAC). We discussed the role that DAC can play as part of a portfolio of emission reduction and carbon removal solutions to help industries with hard-to-abate emissions, such as shipping, reach net zero. NYK recently released their Decarbonization Story, which highlights the need for deep emission reductions along with the importance of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) to address residual emissions. NYK Group's Scope 1+2+3 have set a target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. #DAC #CDR #netzero #shipping

A career highlight! Today Carbon Engineering Ltd. hosted the Jet Zero Council session and chair Mark Harper, Secretary of State for Transport. The focus was on Greenhouse Gas Removals (GGR). I had the pleasure of showcasing STRATOS, the 500kt p.a. Direct Air Capture plant under construction in Texas, using our technology and shared the floor with AirbusSandra Sassone talking about their offtake agreement and subsequent contract with easyJet plus Holly Greig from the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom and Joanne Warner from Department of Energy Security and Net Zero. My (completely unbiased) view is that it was one of the most engaging and lively sessions. My takeaways: (1) How wonderful to have a series of female presenters driving this topic for aviation (2) UK aviation needs to consider that there will be competition for a limited supply of GGR across industries to reach net zero and beyond. It can act now to lead the way. In turn GGR needs demand from aviation to deploy and scale. Without early demand, no supply! (3) In that light I’m encouraged by UK aviation’s work towards advanced demand signals. (4) I heard loud and clear from several companies that permanent GGR should be integrated into the ETS now. I quote “what are we waiting for?”. Thank you to Joanne Warner and team for leading the charge on this. (5) Let’s explore the idea of a net zero SAF mandate that scales GGR in line with the residual emissions of SAF. Indeed the 100% SAF commercial flight to be flown by Virgin Atlantic later this month will remove residual emissions (6) GGR can support the sector to address non-CO2 effects from today Thank you to Madano for coordinating and holidaying the event at their stunning offices and for the view! And to Omar Zin Abidine for his support and Emma Gilthorpe for making this important discussion happen before 2023 was out! Welcoming further comments from other members
