Carbon capture and storage is a vital, yet complex component of large-scale decarbonisation 🌎 For our next #UnboundShowcase, we connected with Patrick Elliott from Carbon Alpha, an experienced team of professionals developing carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects and industrial carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions in Canada 🍁 What are Carbon Alpha doing? 🟢 Building the North Star project, Canada’s first majority Indigenous-owned high-quality CDR project, in partnership with the Meadow Lake Tribal Council. 🟢 The facility provides employment, education, and health programs for the local community, creating 125 construction jobs and 12 permanent jobs. 🟢 Bringing together a team of highly experienced professionals including geologists, engineers, planners, and regulators to create a high-quality CDR project. The Role of CDR in Achieving Net Zero: 🟢 Crucial for hard-to-decarbonise industries like aviation. 🟢 CCS technology helps reduce emissions from heavy industries reliant on hydrocarbons. The Most Valuable Skills for CCS Projects: 🟢 Technical expertise is essential for understanding complex geological formations, ensuring safe CO2 storage, and optimising capture technologies. 🟢 Integrated approach with seamless project development. 🟢 Addressing community concerns and delivering safe, responsible projects. Challenges Facing the Industry: 🟢 Building confidence among carbon removal credit buyers and investors is crucial. 🟢 Establishing transparent and impactful methodologies is essential. 🟢 Collaboration and innovation are needed to meet 2030 targets. We value the community’s unique insights on the #CarbonDioxideRemoval space. If you have a different perspective, we’d love to hear from you! Email us at marketing@unboundsummits.com or share your thoughts in the comments to be featured in a future #UnboundShowcase! 🌏 Unbound Summits connects innovators and accelerates climate action. The CHaSM committee is pleased to introduce our second speaker and Geomechanics Subject Matter Expert for tomorrow's CHaSM Meetup: Patrick McLellan, M.Sc., P.Eng. Pat is a dedicated professional that cannot escape the energy sector, no matter how hard he tries to retire. He is a 'semi-retired' engineering consultant and course instructor for the energy and environmental sectors --- and busier than ever! Pat founded Advanced Geotechnology Inc. in 1994, a geomechanics consulting, training and software firm that was sold to Weatherford International in 2006. He has an impressive CV with research, teaching and technical leadership advisory roles with Shell, Talisman Energy, and through his own engineering consultancy McLellan Energy Advisors Inc. His broad technical expertise in reservoir characterization, drilling, completions, and reservoir engineering across conventional, unconventional, heavy oil, CCUS, geothermal and wastewater management makes Pat an exceptional speaker for our next Geomechanics-themed CHaSM meetup.  His carbon storage project experience includes fractured reservoir characterization, induced seismicity risk assessment, caprock and wellbore integrity, in-situ stress measurement, coupled reservoir-geomechanical simulation, laboratory testing, and reservoir monitoring. Pat currently instructs short courses on petroleum geomechanics, caprock integrity and CCUS. He is also the co-chair of the CEGA Structural Geology Division and the lead author of the In-Situ Stress chapter of the 2027 CEGA Geological Atlas of the WCSB. Pat will present 'In-situ Stress in the WCSB: Insights from Preparing the CEGA 2027 Atlas Chapter and Implications for CCS.' Surprisingly, tomorrow marks his first CHaSM meetup! Let’s give him a warm welcome. 😊 #chasm #geomechanics #cega #geologyrocks #carbonstorage #ccs #ccus

Check out this interview with Carbon Alpha’s Patrick Elliott and the International CCS Knowledge Centre where he discusses the North Star Project and Carbon Alpha’s expertise.

Carbon Alpha is developing what will likely be Canada's first bioenergy with CCS (BECCS) projects - a unique partnership with the Meadow Lake Tribal Council in northern Saskatchewan that will add CCS to a power plant that uses waste wood from the community's sawmill to generate electricity. In our latest CCS Knowledge Spotlight, we spoke with Carbon Alpha's Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder Patrick Elliott about the North Star project, and how the Calgary-based company has evolved into a fully integrated project developer focused on CCS and carbon dioxide removal initiatives. Watch the video interview and read our Q&A with Patrick to learn more about Carbon Alpha’s vision and his thoughts on the future of the CCS industry in Canada and beyond: https://lnkd.in/gp2-y6xW

The CHaSM Committee is thrilled to welcome Kevin Webb as our first Geomechanics Subject Matter Expert taking the stage on Wednesday June 26th.  Kevin is a recovering geologist turned geomechanicist with 20 years of managerial proficiency in reservoir development studies and a best practice approach. He specializes in diverse areas such as CCS assessment, subsurface geosciences, and project management. After 17 yrs with TotalEnergies, including 12 years abroad, during which he worked as a specialist in France, Indonesia, and the Congo, he recently moved back to Calgary to open his own geomechanics consulting company, Aquitaine Energy. Kevin’s CHaSM talk is titled “Rock Solid Strategies: The Groundbreaking Role of Geomechanics in Carbon Capture & Sequestration (CCS)”  He will provide a practical overview of the geomechanical workflows recommended for each carbon storage project development stage. Kevin is passionate about his work, animated and funny…so don’t be surprised if you periodically ‘crack up’😉  Only 20 tickets remain! To respect our lunch sponsor Geofirma Engineering Ltd. and any waitlisted guests, please RSVP only if can attend on June 26th and/or manage your availability status accordingly. Thank you for being considerate of other CCS/CCUS enthusiasts!     If you'd like to become a CHaSM Member, please email events@carbonalpha.com to be added to our VIP distribution list.
