Ashley Morin has witnessed the mental health benefits that patients receive from outdoor recreation. “Physical exercise is so good for mental health, it produces those positive endorphins,” says Morin, a recreation therapist at the Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury. “I've definitely seen patients come out of their shell a little bit more. They’re a little bit more social with each other and with staff.” In 2023, the staff of the centre’s Adult Inpatient Psychiatry program received an allotment from the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation to purchase new bicycles and trikes for their patients, along with helmets and a secure shed for storing the equipment. Biking through the hospital’s expansive green spaces is an important step in moving patients toward reintegration into their home communities. “I think that people need to realize that mental illness affects everybody,” says fellow recreation therapist, Charity Butler. “A lot of our patients are able to have very normal and highly functional lives after being in hospital.”

AHS staff are hosting local health and wellness fairs every Tuesday afternoon at Butler Memorial Park this summer as part of AHS’ Healthier Together initiative. In Edmonton we’re partnering with the City of Edmonton to improve access to healthcare for people who are experiencing houselessness. We recognize there are barriers that prevent vulnerable populations from seeking health services. Healthcare professionals working the fairs can provide wound care, STI and blood-borne infection testing, assessments for referrals and follow-up treatment. They hand out hygiene kits, first aid and wound care kits, dental kits, sunscreen, bug spray and tick keys. Water and snacks are also available. This work is about meeting people where they are to offer healthcare services and supports. AHS is grateful to the City and other partner agencies and organizations for their continued support as we carry out this important work.

Happy 100th Birthday, Reg! For the past 42 years, Reg Evans has volunteered his time at the High River General Hospital, filling the halls with music from his violin. “He plays the old-time tunes, which a lot of the residents are familiar with,” says volunteer coordinator Grace Ledoux. “He loves to see them tapping their toes, singing along, or clapping their hands, it brings him great joy.” To show their appreciation, the continuing care unit at the hospital where he has been playing his violin hosted a 100th birthday party for him. “It's wonderful,” says Reg, reminiscing on his decades of volunteer work. “It does me a lot of good. You know, it gives me a lift. I enjoy playing music for the people.” For anyone looking to live to 100, Reg offers one piece of advice. “Look forward, don't look behind you. Enjoy what's happened in the past and learn from whatever happened in the past but don't dwell on the sad parts. Look forward, your life’s ahead of you!” With 100 years of life and 42 years of volunteering under his belt, Reg is officially retiring from his volunteer work. Thank you for everything, Reg! #ThankYou

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is driven to build our nurse locum program to enhance patient care and address key operational challenges. The program aims to reduce reliance on overtime and agency nurses, which have contributed to significant unbudgeted expenses. The North Zone nurse locum program has successfully provided essential nursing coverage in remote and rural communities and minimized the use of overtime and agency staffing. Our locum program aims to: · Offer unique travel and work opportunities for nurses. · Reduce service disruptions, ensuring consistent, high-quality care in hard-to-recruit areas and rural communities. · Support collaborative efforts with UNA. This initiative is a shared interest and will be further explored during ongoing collective bargaining mediation. Visit our posting for more details and to apply: https://lnkd.in/e3JiHiQt We’re proud to be developing a robust locum program to reduce dependency on overtime and agency nursing and improve frontline capacity. Stay tuned for further updates as AHS continues to build on our locum program!

AHS Protective Services Officers had the opportunity to engage with youth and their parents through games and conversation at a KidsPlay event hosted at the Calgary Police Service YouthLink facility. Officer Rajdeep Cheema, a long-time volunteer with KidsPlay, says these events are crucial to building relationships with those they serve. “We don't want them to be afraid to approach us if they have any issues while staying in hospital,” Cheema explains. “We want them to know that, hey, we're open to talking. We're just like them. We're human beings and we're members of this community and we want to help. We don't want to be an authority figure. We want to be part of the community.” #WeAreAHS
