For Alex Duica, volunteering is more than a hobby or pastime—it’s a part of who she is. “I volunteer because my life has greater meaning when I am putting my efforts towards something bigger than myself,” says Alex. “Volunteering is a way for me to live by my values and effect positive change in my community.”

At 25 years old, our 2023 Faces of Wellness finalist Andrea was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Instead of letting stigma hold her back, she saw an opportunity to support and educate those like her. She is now a passionate advocate for mental, emotional and physical health and wellness. In 2010, Andrea founded the Stigma-Free Society, a charity providing education around stigma and acceptance of mental wellbeing in schools and rural communities. Over the years, the program has expanded to multiple provinces, growing to include no-cost school programing. Learn more about Andrea's story: https://ow.ly/PQNj50SyVYr

Happy Islamic New Year! The Islamic New Year, or Hijrī New Year, aligns with the new crescent moon during “Muharram,” the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The start of the Hijrī New Year is used to calculate the dates of religious feasts and observances, including the month of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. For those who observe it, the Hijrī New Year is an annual reminder of the passage of time, the long history of Islam and the resilience of Muslim people. The sacred month of Muharram follows the Hijrī New Year and it’s an important time of mourning and reflection for many Muslims.
