Abstract

We think of memories as being focused on the past. However, our ability to move freely in the temporal realm of past, present and future is far more complex and sophisticated than commonsense would suggest. In this paper I am concerned with our capacity to produce and extend ourselves into the far future, for example through nuclear power or the genetic modification of food, on the one hand, and our inability to know the potential, diverse and multiple outcomes of this technologically constituted futurity, on the other. I focus on this discrepancy in order to explore what conceptual tools are available to us to take account of long-term futures produced by the industrial way of life. And I identify some historical approaches to the future on the assumption that the past may well hold vital clues for today's dilemma, hence my proposal to engage in 'memory of futures'. I conclude by considering the potential of 'memory aids for the future' as a means to better encompass in contemporary concerns the long-term futures of our making.

Future Matters concerns contemporary approaches to the future – how the future is known, created and minded. In a social world whose pace continues to accelerate the future becomes an increasingly difficult terrain. While the focus of social life is narrowing down to the present, the futures we create on a daily basis cast ever longer shadows. Future Matters addresses this paradox and its deep ethical implications. It locates contemporary approaches to the future in a wider sociological and historical framework of practices, traces differences and continuities, and shows how contemporary practices of futures-construction make taking responsibility for futures all but impossible.
Desperate and vulnerable people, who take enormous risks to migrate to Europe in rickety boats or concealed in the containers of articulated lorries, are familiar images portrayed in the media of “irregular migrants”. Irregular migration has become a major political concern both at the European level and in the wider international context. In the European Union, politicians have identified irregular migration as a “problem” and have given priority to preventing this phenomenon in the development of the common asylum and immigration policy.
This collection of essays is the outcome of an international conference on Irregular Migration and Human Rights, which gathered together prominent scholars, policy-makers and practitioners working in the migration and human rights field. The objective of the book, in contrast to the prevailing political approach which focuses almost solely on prevention, is to discuss the human rights dimensions of irregular migration from theoretical, European and international perspectives. The book is divided into five substantive parts: the complex question of who is an irregular migrant and the difficulties in assessing the size of irregular movements: official and popular perceptions of irregular migrants, a debate which is frequently considered in terms of security concerns, asylum, and human trafficking and smuggling; the myriad strands of the developing EU law and policy on irregular migration, such as the adoption of readmission agreements, and the relationship of this law and policy to external border controls in the context of EU enlargement and other non-legal means of EU decision-making; the contributions of international and non-governmental actors to charting a rights-based approach to irregular migration; and the problems these vulnerable persons face while resident in host countries, such as discrimination and denial of access to social rights and public services, which is inextricably bound up with their irregular status.
Gewalt und Wissen sind intrikat verwoben. Das Wissen um Gewalt kann ihre Kritik ermöglichen. Es kann aber auch Teil der Gewalt selbst sein, etwa wo das Wissen um Lynchings, Folter oder Genozide als offenes Geheimnis und Drohgebärde zirkulieren. Welches Wissen haben Täter*innen, Zeug*innen und Überlebende von Gewalt? Welche Funktion kommt dem Szenischen bei der Produktion dieses Wissens zu? Wie erzeugen oder konterkarieren wissenschaftliche Anordnungen selbst Formen der epistemic violence?

Der interdisziplinäre Band konturiert das Verhältnis von Gewalt und Wissen, Öffentlichkeit und Subjektivität entlang von Positionen aus den Kultur- und Geisteswissenschaften. Er enthält darüber hinaus Beispiele künstlerischen Widerstands und gibt antihegemonialen Stimmen Raum. Im Fokus stehen zum einen das Lager als historischer Knotenpunkt des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts und zum anderen mediale Dispositive und performative Verkörperungen von Gewalt.
Diskurs - Macht - Analyse
Kultur artikuliert, reproduziert und reflektiert sich in hohem Maße in Aufführungen. Das theaterwissenschaftliche Forschungsprojekt Ästhetik des Performativen hat einen analytischen Aufführungsbegriff entwickelt, der den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften in- zwischen als neuer Leitbegriff dient.
Vertreter der Theater- und Tanzwissenschaft, der Ethnologie, der Anthropologie, der Theologie und der US-amerikanischen Performance Studies testen die Reichweite dieses Aufführungsbegriffs und entwickeln ihn weiter. Dabei setzen sie drei Schwerpunkte: Erstens wird diskutiert, wovon eigentlich die Rede ist, wenn 'die Aufführung' zur Sprache kommt. Zweitens wird die soziale und politische Dimension von Aufführungen in Bezug auf die Zirkulation von Macht erörtert. Drittens werden unterschiedliche Analysemethoden erprobt.
