My first product! Designed in collaboration with Carl Merriam (https://brickset.com/sets/list-16576) and the living legend Jørn Thomsen (https://brickset.com/sets/list-16576).

My good friend Ilia Gotlib, who back then was in our product technology team, engineered the fantastic external motor.

Vernie was created by the 3 of us working together, because the neural load was too much for a single designer.
I personally worked on the Guitar and did a number of sketch models for Frankie the cat and the Rover.
The complexity of this project was extremely daunting, only just coming into the company, but it was perfect for teaching me a lot of skills in very little time.

LEGO Ideas No. 22
Bricklist notes
Let’s go Voltron Force!

I cannot put into words how much this model means to me. When it hit 10k votes, I started working on models to try and prove that we could do something like this. Now, almost 2 years later, it’s really happening!

I have Samuel Johnson to thank for fighting to allow me to work on this project and Lendy for getting it to 10k with his awesome model.

From the very beginning, the consensus was that we could not make this as a LEGO product, so it was my job to prove people wrong. To kick reason to the curb and do the impossible! By not giving up and continuing to smash our heads into the wall, we made it possible.

Crucial points in a mech this size are the joints. Most of the development time on this product was relentlessly churning out shoulder and elbow joints just to have them be rejected for any number of reasons by our rigorous quality department. I went through at least 30 different shoulder builds and about 20 full iterations of Voltron in designing this model.

As a fan-builder myself, I was eager to get some good recolors into this set for people that like to build their own stuff, like the ingot and a whole host of drum lacquered pieces!

This set also features a number of decorations, my favorite being the 2x2 grey tile with mechanical detail. This was designed to be a perfect fit, but also a good element to be used in your own creations as a finishing touch. Graphic designer Mark Tranter did a fantastic job.

I really hope you will enjoy building this model, I poured my heart and soul into making this a reality!

This was the first official LEGO product I got to work on with my good friend Nick Vás.(https://brickset.com/sets/list-17126)

Working on this set we switched responsibility on this model several times, but in the end, I was mostly responsible for the mechanism and Nick was mostly responsible for the dragon.

There are a LOT of great color changes in the set, like tan frogs and scorpions, 1x1 round plate in olive, motor plate in red and much, much more. Additionally, there are 3 new prints, the eye and both different sides of the printed 2x2 bow with scales.

Bricklist notes
I started working on Hidden Side in its earliest forms back in September of 2017 and this is the main model I carried from inception to its final form. Additionally, I worked on the styling and tone of the theme a lot.

Designing Hidden Side sets is a huge challenge. Working within the capacity of what the AR can track as well as creating a fun toy on its own is not easy. On top of that, this set is a vehicle. The app experience lends itself better to locations because it can be a more sprawling build.

Developing this set was the testing ground for how we can make AR triggers reliably work as well as make them meaningful in the game. We had a lot of back and forth with the tech team in designing the different types of interactions we could facilitate in a vehicle of this size and I’m quite happy where we ended up.

In addition to making this a good AR experience, I really wanted to make sure the bus still stood on its own without the app. Because the app needs the roof to be on the bus for the recognition to work, I figured out a way to pull the inside out without changing the silhouette and outward facing surfaces. This allowed me to put in a fun interior with plenty of fun things to play with.

In order to justify bringing out the big bus, I wanted there to be some kind of conflict in this set. "The Defecator" was the perfect match. I love things that combine into a cool mech and this seemed like a really fun way to take the transformation concept represented within the theme.

Lastly, this set was a real joy to finish up as I got to work with the graphic designer Andre. He was a designer on Rock Raiders and Bionicle back in the day and a picture of him in "The Ultimate LEGO Book" was my guiding star as a child for chasing my dream to become a LEGO Designer. When I suggested putting in references to some of his past works, he was totally on board.

Rise was nice enough to record my presentation on the development of this set: https://youtu.be/2swBklwWu_U

Bricklist notes
My second set designed together with my co-conspirator Nick Vás! (https://brickset.com/sets/list-17126)

This time we got to make a set based on the Nian or Lion Dance. This set focuses on the different lions and their stage. I really liked the solution we came up with to build the lions to look like they are being puppeteered by two minifigs. It keeps the build nice and at a playable size and allowed us to include a lot of different ones. Just to make sure you still get the individual dancers, we included a support dancer for each of the different colors.

Like last time, this set includes a lot of cool color changes and prints. Some new colors for the banana and the frog as well as a cool green hairpiece.

In order to tie this set into Markus’ Temple Fair (80105), we included the gate that leads you into the temple grounds for all the festivities.

This set is another good example of why Nick and I are not normally allowed to work together.

Wave 2 baby!!!

Up until this point, the smallest set I had designed was the 622 piece Dragon Dance (80102). So making a $20 play set was a real challenge, especially with 4 minifigs.

For this second wave of Hidden Side sets, we were looking to continue exploring Newbury.

This set in particular is a really weird one because it takes place inside the Hidden Side. Therefore it is the only set to include physical ghost figures!

This set may be small but it needed to do a lot of different things. In addition to the 2019 AR experience that requires marker and triggers for interactions, the 2020 sets also needed to be a level for the brand new multiplayer experience. They need to be fun to explore and walk around in in first person. Most importantly, it needed to be a fun toy. I managed to include a small feature where the tree barfs out some spiders and a bat (spooky!) as well as some claws that can reach out and grab Jack.

It was fun to design a set with a weird shifted color palette. It allowed me to color change some of the leaf elements into a funky blue. I also love color shifted Jack, he looks great.

Another small set!

This one had been sitting on my desk as an idea for a while when it got drafted into the first half 2020 launch. I love the way this thing bounces and the fact it can seat 3 minifigs. It’s just a really fun toy with a eye catching color scheme.

I order to create cohesion between the good guys and bad guys for Hidden Side, we made the colors for the good guys really pop. This set is no exception. (The picture on the site doesn’t do it justice because the green switch is uncovered, it looks much better with it covered up, I swear. :p)

Fitting the color wheel and the switches into this little buggy I built was a real team effort. After that, the gas pump was added for context.

This set almost killed me. I was challenged to make a lighthouse with an impactful transformation that could still be tracked by the app. This meant that I couldn’t change the silhouette and it needed to work as a trigger for the AR experience. On top of all of that, it also needed to be a fun level to walk around in for the new multiplayer experience.

I really like the end result though. There is a lot of things going on, from the cave down below, to the possessed flood light at the top.

I also wanted to make sure that the build of this set was totally different from our previous lighthouses. Some interesting building techniques include the panels that open for the transformation as well as the angle of the lighthouse on the rocks. Its quite a fun build with a lot of hidden features.

This set really displays what we did with the contrasting color schemes. The lighthouse is very muted in color and the jet ski has a striking purple/teal/pink color scheme.

My first Ninjago set!

Getting to reinterpret such a fan favorite as as well as a set designed by a designer I look up to (Adrian Florea https://brickset.com/sets/list-9388) was a great pleasure.

It's no secret that I love mechs and Cole and Jay are my favorite ninjas, so this was perfect. I tried to keep the attitude of the original. I wanted to take some of the most defining shapes of the original and blow them up to create a kind of caricature.

For the raider, I focused on the triangular plating on top that converges in one point. By using the tail rudder, I found a neat and new way to cover the back of the tracks a little bit.

For the mech, I wanted to really accentuate the big feet/lower legs and the shoulders. Because he needed to be folded up on the back of the raider, he needed knees, which I didn't mind.

My last Hidden Side set. In this 3rd wave, we really hit our stride in both the aesthetical design as well as the AR integrated design.

With this set I was tasked to design a sequel to the 70423 School Bus. I am really happy what we ended up with. I'd consider this to be my Aliens to the bus' Alien. The bus focuses on the investigation and suspense of ghost hunting where the truck brings all the guns and action.

I love designing vehicles of this size. Enough space to add the necessary detail and character, but not too big to easily play with.

When I joined Hidden Side in the beginnings of the theme, people told me there was no way that we could get a mech into the theme. This is because of the limitations of the AR technology, but here we are.

There is something innately cool about giant fire trucks and the only way to make it cooler would be by adding a mech. I explored some options the had more HQ space in the back instead, but the mech was universally loved better. I think the final product has a good balance between base/mech transport.

I did a lot of exploration on The Harbinger, trying to find something that was appropriately alien for an extradimensional creature. The upscaled minifig head was a really fun interpretation of the ghost from the app and felt like a natural progression of the style.

Lastly, TeeVee has been trying to sneak his way into my sets for a very long time now, but now the time was right. Nick Vás (https://brickset.com/sets/list-17126) and I built him for a project back in 2016.

I was very excited when I was briefed to make a new big version of Zane’s mech. I am really happy with how this thing turned out. As a big fan of the original set, this was so much fun.

From the beginning, I was briefed to make this a $60 version of Zane's mech and that was a really cool thought experiment. Because the show stuck very close to the design of the set, I was told to use this more as an exploration of the concept.

I did some sketches closer to the original design, followed by some sketches that were very far out there. With both extremes mapped out, I was then tasked to find a nice middle ground. This set the final direction and then I went into refining mode, focusing on the build and small details.

Smallest of the summer wave of sets, this model was a challenge because of its size and intended age mark. Being 7+ meant having to really simplify it down, but with a mech, you always have to make sure things are properly locked and stable for play. I'm very happy with how the torso ended up being built with the wheelbase pieces used to connect the arms and shoulder pads to the central structure.

Originally, this was going to be a Kai mech 2x its size. A red crab mech with claws for both hands. Because of this wave's lack of small price points, the mech was pushed down to a $20 set and lowered in agemark. Additionally, the higherups decided that it was going to be a Lloyd mech instead, which still kind of works, as there are dark green crabs.

I wanted to go for a good mix of the classic Ninjago mech style with a little more utilitarian vibes with tubes and lights for that submarine vibe.

This is the first model I developed mostly from home during the pandemic so I have less fully build pictures as I was mostly tinkering with the model instead of building new versions from the ground up.

There was an older sketch model by Theo Bonner, that explored the aesthetic and concept. I took it from here and was tasked to make it into a submarine version of the Bounty, then named the Sword of the Sea. I did some sketches to start off with to explore the shape and features.

A lot of development time was spent figuring out the structure and how to build something that was elegant but could also house 2 of the smaller submarines. Additionally, a bounty needs a transformation feature on the back.

I explored several accent colors but ended up going for the simple but elegant black and white. I really wanted to include the dark tan shields unprinted and found a cool turbine build that I liked.

The door construction proved to be a real pickle as we needed something that could open wide enough to let the subs pass through but also be strong enough. My friend Milan Madge was facing a similar problem with his shuttle, so I stole his solution and turn it transparent blue.

I really liked the idea of a mech being the figurehead of the ship and explored a lot of different transformations to make it integrate well with the bigger submarine.

I came up with a neat mechanism to fold out the fins on the turbines. The final model includes a string mechanism that allows you to unfold both sides by pulling the rear facing cannons on the Bounty.

Because we knew Wu would be left on the surface, I really liked the idea of him calling in remotely on a television with legs. That idea turned into the Wu Bots. (Or Tea-Vee as I have seen him be called <3)

One of my proudest achievements. This set was designed as part of the Core line which main goal was to introduce new kids to Ninjago with fresh and manageable builds of Ninjago cornerstones.

This dragon is built in a simple way using a lot of bricks and large plates; these are pieces kids of this agemark enjoy building with the most and they reach for first when making their own creations. By doing so, we ensured that the new kid's first Ninjago experience is a smooth and encouraging one while also giving them inspiration and pieces to make their own stuff.

The one that pioneered the SCCBS system!
We got the brief for what our leadership had in mind for 2022. We were asked to come up with a line of Ninjago that would not only stand on its own without content but also be the epitome of Ninjago toys and a great introduction for new kids. After the specialized launches like Prime Empire and Seabound, the markets asked for a wave with the classic Ninjago identity. We would not get any story continuing content in order to make sure we could get started on 2HY 2022 as early as possible. Thus, Core was born.

In order to ensure an appropriate building experience for the 6+ agemark we started a lot of model and element concepts to explore the 3 cornerstones of Ninjago: Vehicles, dragons and mechs.

We made a new limb element that would allow kids to build their own mech relatively simply as well as create a skeleton to upgrade with regular system elements and a newly developed shell piece.

I cannot overstate how much I love this set and the effect it has had on mech and creature building in LEGO products. Being able to make toys that are truly appropriate building and play experiences is super rewarding.

Without a doubt, my favorite set I have worked on so far. Inspired by tokusatsu and anime alike, this set was something I wanted to do for Ninjago for a very long time.

I like to think of this set as a playtheme in a box. It has 1 mech, 3 vehicles and 1 villain mech. I took a lot of the learnings I got from designing Voltron and expanded on them in this set. By limiting the amount of technic and making as many of the connections system connections, I kept the wiggling and bending to a minimum while also making it relatively easy and fun to build.

For this set, I was finally given the element frame to create the piece I have been wanting since I worked on Zane's Titan Mech in 2019. https://brickset.com/parts/6365679/flex-joint-female-w-dia-4-85-snap The new hip and shoulder joint that marries the AT-AT ratchet with 2 Galidor ratchets to create a 2 axis joint capable of carrying larger models. This piece was originally pitched by Janko Grujic (https://brickset.com/sets/designer-Janko-Grujic), and I had asked for it ever since he did.

It also uses all the new pieces we made for SCCBS. It does this both in conventional ways (cockpit and limbs) and novel ways (shell in the thighs of the Kai mech). Fully showcasing the overall versatility of the new suite of elements.

I'm so happy that it is doing well and many kids have managed to get their hands on this toy. It is my pride and joy.

Everyone has to design a Ninjago buke at some point! Made at the same time as 71775, this model almost designed itself. With the big pieces in place (figure with the wings, dragon head front, big wheels and shell decoration pieces on the side), it was my task to fill out the place in between with the budget that was left.

I managed to find some space in the budget to include the crystal spider as they appeared surprisingly often in the scripts that started coming in while I was finishing the designs for the Crystalized sets.

This mech was a real challenge. Not only was it huge, but it was also a lot more rounded and sculpted than I am used to. Under the watchful eye of Leonardo Lopez, I tried to perfect the design to the last little frill and detail. My favorite parts of this model are the way the X on the chest is built and angled and the color changed cockpits for the kneepads. From the first moment I saw those cockpits, I knew I wanted to try this and I think it works really well. One of the biggest challenges was what to do with the ankles, their articulation ended up being quite limited because of the weight, making the knees not nearly as exciting, but I have some ideas for how I can iterate on that in the future.

This set has a crazy amount of exclusive minifigures too.

Another mech, wouldn't you know it. This Ninjago Core set was developed in tandem with the new Dragons Rising show, which is why it was lucky to get a couple of seconds of fame in the first episode.

This mech is very different from a lot of the other ones I did. Normally, I build stuff chunky and angular, but for this we wanted to go for a sleek, slowing and organic aesthetic (90s anime). Getting the hips to be that close together was a real challenge as was making an arm that would be strong enough to hold up the biggest sword we have every put on a Ninjago mech. I am really happy with how it turned out and with how relatively simple the build ended up being. It was a fun model to design.

For the conflict I was excited to resurrect the old Vikings projectile launch function. It is not as powerful, but I think it is still fun and hopefully inspiring the next generation with the same fun functions I grew up with.
