• Sets designed by Leon Pijnenburg

Featured BrickList Compiled by Leon1979. Updated 30 June 2024. Contains 22 sets.
All LEGO sets, no matter how big or small, are the result of teamwork in some capacity. We work together with and get input from other designers, graphic designers, element designers, model coaches, the people who make the building instructions and many more. I just made this list to keep track of the LEGO sets I have worked on since starting at the company in 2019.

I am actually part of the LEGO City design team, but I helped out on a handful of the LEGO Super Mario sets. There were already concepts for most if not all of these characters, which together with Alice G. (who is highly skilled at this sort of stuff) I then turned into final products. I especially love the deco for Paragoomba's suspicious face, which like the rest of the graphics was done by Andre S.

This one was so much fun to work on! I worked on this set with Pablo G. and Daire M. and they are phenomenal to work with. Pablo and I mainly focused on the NES Control Deck, Game Pak and controller while Daire worked on the TV. To get the loading mechanism for the Game Pak on the NES to work was a real (but incredibly fun) challenge. Fun fact: The only stickers in this set are the ones that would be stickers in real life, so they actually add to the authenticity. There are many fun details all over this set and we hid a nice little easter egg for you to find in the NES. So turn on your lava lamp, put on your slap bracelet, plug in your NES controller and start playing Super Mario Bros.! Graphics done by Andre S.

Bricklist notes
I was very lucky to be asked to help on this year's employee Christmas gift. When we were asked to come up with a set that celebrated the 40th anniversary of LEGO Education, I came up with the initial concept of Santa's workshop where everything could be brought to life by different mechanisms driven by a single crank. Looking at it from the front you have a nice display piece with a lot of movement, and from the back you can see how everything works and learn about the different mechanisms. We decided to split the set and the instructions up into 4 modules, each with their own mechanism. This way, you can build it with family and friends.

The first module, designed by Robert H., focuses on gears. This can already be seen in the tree, which is made out of splat gears, but also in the back, where the mechanism is visible that makes sure the tree turns one way and the LEGO Education Duplo train goes the other way. Did you also notice the Elf on the Shelf, sitting next to the LEGO Education Mindstorms NXT Unit?

The second module, made by Lee M., is all about cams. This takes rotary motion and turns it in to side-to-side or up-and-down motion, allowing the elf to make and paint the new Spike Prime hubs and motors! He has to hurry, as you can see behind him that the clock almost strikes midnight!

I designed the corner module, which contains a universal joint to make the rotary motion go around the corner, as well as a crank that rocks the elf back and forth, so she can take the finished presents and put them on the conveyor belt. She is assisted by a small Christmas mouse and WeDo's Milo.

The final module, made by Carl M., is centered around belts. Powered by a Mindstorms EV3 hub, the conveyor belt rolls the presents out of the workshop, ready for Santa to deliver them to kids everywhere. A rubber band is used to spin the governor, a neat mechanism to regulate speed. I wonder what's in the package wrapped in the LEGO Boost color scheme... The naughty elf might take a peak. I had an absolute blast designing this one. We wanted to mix it up from the normal semi-truck configuration, so we opted for a heavy duty pick-up truck. The trailer took a bit of time, since it needed to be tall enough for figures to comfortably stand in, low enough to fit under the gate in the 60316 police station, have opening doors and removable panels everywhere and then it of course still had to be sturdy and stable with that gooseneck shape. My favorite part of this set is the little tractor which I designed when I was at home one evening and which makes for the cutest getaway vehicle ever! Graphics done by Austin C.

My good friend Heiko K. actually designed a civilian version of this as a small off-road vehicle for fun one day, thinking it could always find it's way into a set at some point. Then when I was asked to come up with some suggestions for what the fire polybag could be, it was a perfect fit. I just did the recoloring and some minor changes to finalize it.

One very cool thing about being a LEGO designer is that you sometimes also get to be an architect! The styling of the station went through many different iterations before I landed on something that I was happy with. There is a lot going on in and around the station and to find room for it all was probably one of the main challenges. The platform is long enough for two of the cars from #60337 to unload and can be combined with the small platform that comes with that set to make it even longer. The vehicles were also a fun task. Bus 43, I wonder where that is going... It has a bike rack on the back, but I designed that so that it can be left off without making the bus look incomplete. And yes, railroad porta-potties are a thing. Graphics done by Ioana P.

When the LEGO 2K Drive was in development, we were asked if we wanted to design some vehicles that you could drive in the game. I had a bit of time one day to come up with a few designs they ended up using. It was super fun to work on these vehicles without having to consider durability, budgets, etc.

Included in season pass 2:
-Monster Tanker
-Alpacar (My personal favorite, I was so excited to see it made the final cut with it's adorable clueless eyes, heavily drooling while chewing on some leaves)
-Swan Boat
-Oink
-Couch Potato
-Drift Truck

Included in season pass 3:
-Apocalypse Truck (This one was modified by the game developers quite a bit, they added spikes and skulls and gave it that apocalyptic look)
-The Long Haul
-Cheese Mobile (A little nod to the Netherlands, where I'm from)
-Roasted Boat
-Taco Truck
-Ice Skimmer

I had a lot of fun coming up with the design for the station. We wanted it to be bold and very different from the previous fire stations we've done in LEGO CITY. Credit for the truck goes to Corvin S. as he helped me out with that while I focused on the building. I especially love the minifigures, with their torso's showing the different layers of their suits! Graphics done by Matt P. (https://brickset.com/sets/list-72819).

A lot of functionality in this one. There's room for two figures side by side in the cab, storage for all of their gear, the opening main lab and a small holding cell. It was a super fun challenge to get the studs on the roof of the lab to go down, so that when it's opened they actually face up so you can place figures on there, while keeping everything sturdy and have it be buildable for 7 year old kids. I also really like that we finally have red and blue lights on the police vehicles this time around! I did a lot of sparring on this model with Chris S., who kept challenging me to find new ways to improve it. Graphics done by Matt P. (https://brickset.com/sets/list-72819).

The yellow LEGO delivery truck has been a staple ever since set 335 'Transport Truck' came out in 1967. Many variations have been released since then, with 2010's set 3221 'LEGO City Truck' being one of the most beloved icons of the range.

I was really excited to learn that we were going to do a new iteration of this classic and even more so when I heard that I got to work on it! When I was a kid, my father worked at a restaurant where many truck drivers would stop for a break, so I often got to see them up close and take in all the details. I have always had a soft spot for American style long nosed trucks, and to get to design one with this amount of detail was a dream come true.

After many years of going without standardization for trailer hitches, we finally have a dedicated element (not in small part thanks to the efforts of Robert H.)! I also worked closely together with Corvin S., who designed set 60408 'Car Transporter,' to ensure the trucks and trailers could easily be mixed and matched.

The pallets and trailer interior are designed so that the pallets can easily be loaded from the side with the forklift, but they can also be rotated 90°, which allows for three of them to fit together on one side. The hot dog stand's umbrella is made so that it can fold up, so that the remaining pallet and the hot dog stand can also fit in the other side of the trailer for when you want to carry the set around.

The awesome graphics on the side of the trailer were done by Matt P. (https://brickset.com/sets/list-72819), while the miniature LEGO boxes were designed by Brian G. These are based on sets 60405 'Emergency Rescue Helicopter,' 60412 '4x4 Fire Truck With Rescue Boat,' the magnificent 60419 'Police Prison Island' and 60430 'Interstellar Space Ship.' They also managed to sneak in a little reference to set 60426 'Jungle Explorer Off-Road Truck.'
