• Sets Designed by Laura Perron

Featured BrickList Compiled by Perronnah. Updated 25 February 2024. Contains 19 sets.
Sets that I have worked on as a Designer since 2017 :) Making new sets is a very collaborative process, and there are many people working behind each set! Bjarke said it best, so I'll just copy him:
"It´'s important to emphasize, that making a new LEGO set and bringing it to the market, is a very complex process that involves the skills, knowledge, experience and enthusiasm from hundreds of LEGO employees in many different departments: Design, Marketing, Building Instruction, Production, Packaging, Distribution and more. The goal is to make each LEGO set the best possible building- and play experience for our customers, and it only becomes possible, because everyone is working together to achieve this."

28 out of 28 people thought this BrickList was helpful.

We made a lot of sketch models for the DOTS theme, and the pineapple was one of the very first! The first model was made by Ellen Bowley in 2017. I made the next sketch models and the watermelon buddy to get the final build and facial expressions.

This pack is different from the previous 2 in the series, because it brings in two new elements. The first is a round tile (light lavender) with a raised star (transparent pink) in the center. The second is a square tile (dark blue) with a raised diamond (clear opalescent). These raised tiles add a great shimmer effect to your LEGO builds! A journey into the DOTS universe! This pack has it all. Start with the classic DOTS bracelet and bag tag. Then try a little bit of building with the photo frame. Then end with the large build, the cactus pencil pot! Putting a cactus into a LEGO set is a dream of mine. This was a lot of fun to work on :)

For every set I work on, I make a powerpoint document to record the progress and different versions of the model. For this set, the sequel to 41935 LOTS OF DOTS, I used a poster from The Fast and the Furious movies as the title page and named it "2 LOTS 2 DOTS". Unfortunately the name didn't stick, and we named it LOTS OF DOTS - Lettering instead.

The final version of this model stayed pretty close to the original first sketch I made. It was the same blue and said "BOLD". We played with a lot of different frame styles, and ended up making 2 new elements that are used here in dark azure, and in white in 41951 Medium Message Board. They are elongated versions of 49307, which we called the "Toe Bean" because we used it on the animal bag tags for little feet. We called the 1x4 frame element the "Loaf" because its like a little loaf of bread. I made so so so many different sign designs for this set. It's true when we say the possibilities are endless! One of the first signs I made was one that said "BUTTS", and it remains as my favorite design.

The end of my DOTS era! This is my final DOTS product, and I am really proud of this one. At this point I had been working on the DOTS theme for around 5 years, and I felt this product come together really smoothly after those years of experience with the fabulous DOTS design team. It is easy to build, it comes with a lot of tiles to decorate with, and it has that extra layer of creativity with being able to customize what animal it is. It's not a very large or complicated model, but I think that is what gives it its strength. Thank you DOTS, it was a pleasure to be a part of the journey <3

LEGO Ideas No. 44
Bricklist notes
This was a complete dream to be a part of! I saw that it was gaining votes fast on LEGO IDEAS, so I reached out to the Creative Lead, Sam Johnson, to say that if this goes through the review process I need to be a part of it. It did indeed go through, but there was some concern about the workload of taking on this product while still working full time on the DOTS theme. So I asked, what if Chris worked on it too? Chris Perron is an incredible designer, avid Office fan, and also happens to be my husband. Not going to lie, some people were hesitant to have a husband and wife team work on it together, but I think we proved that it worked! We had watched the series together so many times, it was so easy to work with Chris on it. We had a lot of great input from many colleagues who are also big fans of the show. The model that Fan Designer Jaijai Lewis submitted was an awesome design to start with, it was packed with so many great details. We started with that as our base then continued to take it through the LEGO Design process. We wanted to make sure we got in as many jokes and references as possible! We would talk about it constantly, often in our kitchen while cooking dinner. One time Chris was in the shower and yelled out an idea for how to build the tan shelves. We joke that a good chunk of this set was actually designed in our living room. I listened to The Office Ladies podcast and read books and blogs about behind the scenes, shoutout to The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s: an Oral History by Andy Greene. Together with Jaijai and the LEGO IDEAS team we poured a lot of love into this set and I am so happy with the result. What really tied this model together and took it to the next level, was the amazing Graphic Design work by Diego Sancho. Even before this idea got the green light, Diego had designed Jim, Pam, Dwight, and Michael in his spare time, so we all thrilled when he officially joined the project! My absolute favorite design

The Little Mermaid is one of my most favorite Disney movies, so I was so excited to be a part of this world! I had the opportunity to temporarily join the Disney design team to work on this set, and I am really happy with how it turned out. The brief was to tie in some functional storage and pattern play, along with role play to tie in with the new live action film. I enjoyed bringing in my DOTS experience to fuse it with the Disney style of play. And being a big fan of the movies, I loved putting in the details of Ariel's Treasure cove that I knew (spyglass, thingamabobs, dinglehopper) as well as incorporating the details from the new adaptation. Shout out to Crystal, Tobey, and Nikki for the lovely graphics and their work on the fabulous Ariel minidoll, and the Disney team for letting me play on the team for a couple of months :) I recently watched the new movie and was smiling so much! I think it is fresh and lovely, and Halle Bailey's rendition of "Part of your World" is incredible. After watching I felt even more joy that I was able to be a part of this set!

How do you secretly design a set inside the same building as all of your colleagues? You hide in plain sight! I was so excited to join this ultra-secret team to design this years Employee Holiday set. Not only did I need to keep it a secret from my colleagues who sit beside me, I also wanted to keep it a secret from my husband who is also a model designer sitting just upstairs from me. And I succeeded! He had no idea I was on the team until the set was officially unveiled. I worked with many other designers on this one, together we created several different concepts that were pitched to LEGO family owners Kjeld and Thomas, and LEGO CEO Niels. Together they decided on this direction: a set that could be built together with friends and family, with minibuilds to build each day! From there we refined the build and went through the standard LEGO Design process: working alongside model coaches, Building Instruction Specialists, Graphic Designers (shoutout to Crystal for the fabulous decos on this one!) and more. Together I think we crafted a special building experience! I worked for 5 years on the DOTS theme, and I was excited to bring in the pattern-play to this model for employees to customize their own builds.

Bricklist notes
Not going to lie, I had a bit of an existential crisis when starting this set. My previous builds had been quite boxy and square, so getting to work on such an organic shape was a challenge and a delight! The idea for this beautiful conept was submitted by Ivan Guerrero, it was great to work together to bring his concept to life! There were two larger changes we made to his submission, the first was to remove the minifigures and the second was to change the build for how photos were incorporated into the set. The reason we removed the minifigures was to broaden the concept of family. The definition of Family changes from person to person, so we wanted to focus on making the best set possible for people to add whatever family means to them (is it pets, minifigures, minidolls, etc). I imagined that this was a Sunday in the park, and its up to you to customize to reflect what family means to you: by choosing the color of flowers, the accessories, and the photos. We wanted to set the stage for you to make it your own, and the easiest way to keep that open was to remove the minifigures. The second change came about because of a new element that was developed initially for DOTS. The 2x2 plate photo holder is the evolution of the brick version used in DOTS sets, and it was perfect for this model because it allowed you to add whatever photo size you wanted (within reason of course, I don't recommend a super large photo). Some new colors appear in this set: small leaf elements in red, 1x1 flowers in red-orange, and the photo holder in red-orange.
