Hey everyone, I'm Corvin, designer on LEGO City since 2015, but up until now without a set list. Time to change that! While these are sets that I directly worked on, please remember that in the end they all represent a team effort =)

A fairly straightforward SKU, but exciting since I haven't had the opportunity to work with a floating boat prior to this. Several arch bricks on the inside help to save on weight and to make sure the boat is balanced in the water - which does get tested! Another fun part was to differentiate the truck by giving it a sporty front section, almost making it a racing truck in its own right, rather than just a transporter. Also, it was a pleasant surprise to find the 30925 spoiler on the trailer slotted exactly into the bottom of the boat hull, which came in very handy. Sketches by Craig C. and Erik R., final design by me. Graphics by Claus M.

This was a lot of fun to work on, from exploring the design of the electric crossover SUV (and the driver and doggy) to the teal (!!!) surfer van. I saw some comments speculating to the side door: It was admittedly a bit of an odd choice, but the reason it was included was so it could double as a sun roof when put into the open position, which felt appropriate for going camping on the beach. And my collaborator Tore from the graphic design team did an awesome set of bumper stickers for this van, as well as the football/soccer match on the TV inside!

The station itself was kept pretty straightforward. I am happy I got to use the fairly new 41682 elements to get the glass roof over the pumps. No full roof over the shop area, which I know some people were missing, but this was done so it's easier to put the minifigures inside and play there. Sketch by Jørgen M., final design by me. After many years of our 8 wide planes using the same front and back elements, it was really nice to be involved with developing a new version. The element designers did a fantastic job with the new aircraft elements and it was a lot of fun talking through their design with them, especially as an aviation fan. Making the plane a combi jet for both passengers and cargo was a fun challenge and it was nice to update some of the design features of our planes in general, such as going away from the old Jack Stone turbine piece. The most exploration was done on the color scheme. I don't know why, but planes always seem to inspire more discussion than most other models in that regard, so we ran through several variations before picking the blue/orange/flame orange. I did see some comments about the big wing going through the cabin. I would have preferred it without that too, but in order to accommodate the engines under the wings and have enough ground clearance with the landing gear, the wing had to sit at a certain height. One last fun detail to include were the roller coaster tracks as a roof for the terminal building, inspired by the modern architecture found on a lot of airports these days. My favorite detail however are the tongue-in-cheek stickers for the screens inside the cabin and the terminal. It was time someone came by Voya Nui and actually saved the band! A chase involving a fast jet? Sign me up! The brief was simple: Design a jet with the means to capture a crook trying to escape via parachute. Getting there was a bit more tricky. Some sort of hook was needed, but where to put it? How long does it need to be? Which shape should it have to make sure the parachute stays hooked once you catch it. And once you catch it, how do you make sure neither the model nor parachute gets damaged if it gets snagged on something like a door handle etc. How easy is it to play with in general? There was a lot of iterating needed. A police motorbike and ATV with room for both crooks round out the story. I added a bar to the back of the ATV so that it can be caught via jet as well, just for good measure! Sketch and final design by me.

This one is very dear to me. When I was a kid, I often went skiing for the winter holidays and inevitably, I would try to build the snow groomers I saw out on the slopes. So it was super exciting when it was decided to have one in our 2019 great vehicles lineup. The design itself was straightforward, but it is always a challenge to make tracked vehicles that don't use the rubber treads for younger kids. But those would just not have looked right with the scale here. We also decided to use the six stud shooter as a snow cannon, since we rarely get to use them in City and this was a good opportunity to include this fun play feature. I also got to use some brand new pieces (at the time) for this one: Prominently the new 1x1 brackets for the lights on the roof and, just out of sight the new tire from LEGO Movie 2, to help drive the tracks. SPACE! Sometimes, the planets just align right and the 2019 space theme for city was just such an occasion: The 50th anniversary of the moon landing was coming up, and the entire team was on the same page and we turned our office into a little mission control center. It was a blast to work on this theme! This set is a bit of a spiritual successor to the 6339 Shuttle Launch Pad, as I wanted to create a similar experience of being able to assemble the entire rocket and payload with the rover garage and big crane. The 30036 wing profile plates included with the big crawler vehicle are also a nod to classic space sets. Lots of sketch models from Andrew C., Luka K., Robert H. and me. Final design by me. Be on the City team long enough, and this one becomes pretty much inevitable after a while! Building a police station is a bit of a rite of passage, so I was very excited to get asked to build it for the Mountain police. It's an important set in the lineup, so the team has a big interest in getting it right. The general layout with the three levels of garage/prison/office was already decided when I took over final development of the model. The big challenge was how to connect those three levels in a stable way without over-complicating the build. Especially the tall pillars for the garage needed some reinforcing and it took some time to find the best way to integrate the staircases between the levels. The real fun part for this one was to mix it up a little bit - most obviously with the crooks helicopter. Some trivia about this model: During development there was the issue of using a door-frame as a structural support in the back of the station - which left a pretty big hole from the garage leading directly to the cougar's cave. Having a big wild cat in your police station seemed rather unsafe, so that's why there is a door with a "keep out" sticker. The graphic designer also came up with an awesome little joke with the master crook having a framed picture of his pet piranha in the cell - the same fish that the police are holding in the small aquarium in their office. And lastly, the tail-fin of the crook's helicopter not only worked perfectly for the light-weight style of the aircraft, but is also a small Bionicle reference to 8690 Onua Mistika since it's red as well and it's nice to see that element have its uses to this day. Kicking off 2018 with a fast little jet. Jets are cool! But doing them justice at this small scale comes with it's own challenges: It needs to be stable and buildable for young kids, but should still look sleek an aerodynamic. However, in this case, the biggest factor was the color scheme and stickers. I worked very closely with my lead Erik and Claus from graphics on this model to get the stickers just right. Taking a small detour from City, there was an opportunity to help out Speed Champions with two sets for 2018. This was a really exciting model to work on, since the actual car had not been revealed at the time, so we were among the first people to get a look at this racer. The concept models for the 919 that we had built before were all based on previous years' LeMans versions, but Porsche changed the design quite a bit for the new one, which brought about some challenges. The square road sign in combination with the 1x2 bow w. cutout recreate the aerodynamic shaping on the body. And using the classic doors and new wheel arches allowed for building this one as low to the ground as possible. Fun Trivia: The stickers originally had the number 1 printed on, but then Car #2 won the LeMans race, so graphic design went back in and changed it. Sketch and final design by me.

Quite a long name for a small set, but another fun one to work on. The big challenge, as with every model of an actual car, is to capture the iconic design elements. On the 488 there's quite a few, but the biggest one in terms of the build was the large air-intake above the rear wheels. Originally the intention was to have a 1-plate thick gap and then use the new 35787 triangle tile, but then the 1x2 bows with cutout came along and as you can see the intake got a lot more prominent. The trickiest bit on the 488 was the front bumper. It involves both sideways and upside down building while maintaining enough ground clearance to not scrape the asphalt. What a drag that would be. My favorite small details are the 32828 espresso machine head plates as the support struts for the front diffusor and the 1x1 quarter tiles as rearview mirrors. We don't get to include mirrors that often at this scale. In this wave, the 488 GTE (which is slightly different) was also featured in 75889, which was designed by Daire M. We collaborated closely on both cars, but each gave our 488 its own twist. A big shoutout to my colleague Andre in the graphics design team who made the stickers line up perfectly for the final model. Sketch models by the Speed Champions team under Craig C. at the time, final model by me.

Bricklist notes
Summer 2018, the City Explorers returned to the Arctic. Considering how ridiculously hot that summer was here in Denmark, it was a welcome distraction to look at all the snow and ice. And many things were found in said ice: Ancient frozen dragonflies, saber-toothed cats and wooly mammoths. Problem is, how do you get them out of the ice - and once they're out: How do you get them back to the city? Designing this set was a lot of fun: using the new smilodon big cat, making sure it and all the other cargo could be loaded onto the plane by gratuitous use of SNOT (for a City set at least) in the back and a new saw piece for the tracked vehicle. Speaking of tracks: The 3-wide technic tracks are always a little tricky. They were designed to be driven by small gear wheels but often roll poorly on smooth surfaces. So it was time for a new approach: 61254 tires instead of using gears. This way, there is enough friction to ensure a smooth ride, even on polished tables. I first experimented with this solution back in 2015 when we were developing the volcano explorers, but it finally found a use here. It worked so well in fact, that Star Wars used the same method on the 75217 Conveyex Transport! Sketch model by Martin K. and me, final design by me. Graphics by Anthony P.

This wasn't originally my assignment but a change in the assortment happened and I was asked to take over. The idea behind the starter sets is to pack a lot of characters and story into a small box so it can be a good first set for younger kids. Very happy that the little police car could be big enough to fit both the dog or one of the captured crooks. My colleague Heiko came up with the brilliant little exploding function for the ATM.
And in a bizarre coincidence, just a few days after work was finished on this model, some real life crooks blew up an ATM just across the street from the office. Sketches by Heiko K. and me, final design by me.

One of my favorites that I worked on so far. Building vehicles is fun, so being able to do three in one box was awesome! I learned a lot about model stability in this one, especially with building the base of the helicopter. Still quite pleased with how the crooks' getaway car turned out - and to my surprise I found out it's also the model they put on posters in Legoland parking lots to remind people not to leave their belongings in their vehicles. This set also marked the return of Chase McCain, back on duty in LEGO City Undercover. Sketch and final design by me, graphics by Justin C. iirc.

My colleague Heiko was in charge of developing this set and came up with the brilliant function on the helicopter and the other cool vehicles in this model. But to allow for a little more time to develop those, I was asked to help out with the tower, the attached crane and the jungle ruins. It was a real fun collaboration. That's what's great about working in a team: Everybody gets to suggest ideas, doesn't matter if you do graphics and have a good idea for a model or if you are a model designer with a good idea for a TV spot. So everyone is able to have a little personal touch in each set. Fun trivia about this one: We were never quite sure what the statue outside the cave was supposed to represent, so in the end it was dubbed "Bear-Hamster". Sketch models by Heiko K. and me, final design by Heiko K. Graphics by Anthony P. and Justin C. iirc.

Another rite of passage in City: Designing the advent calendar. This one is a small challenge, due to the packaging it comes in. There are a lot of constraints for what you can do with each individual model and the fact that the instructions have to be one single picture. Some of the micro-builds were a lot of fun. And, I finally got to make the 1x2 jumper plate in dark green ^^ Sketch and final design by me.

My first official model, though not in a box. My brief was a small firefighter's car and a scenario. This being the first model, I was surprised to find how much thought goes into something just this small. Probably had a dozen or so different variants lined up on my desk at one point of just the car. I keep some of them in a drawer still, as a reminder. Sketch and final design by me.

My first boxed set. It was super-exciting to play around with the then-new new bar connector pieces and bull bar on the front of the truck. There were probably two dozen or more iterations of this model before we picked the direction seen here with the exchangeable tools in the back. The biggest challenge was to figure out the correct order of the build of the roll cage. Sketch model and final design by me, with a lot of guidance by Ricco K, my design lead at the time. LEGO Ideas No. 29
Bricklist notes
It was awesome to see the LEGO ideas anniversary contest giving a lot of the previously supported projects another shot to become a product. When the ISS was announced as the winner, I immediately approached Sam, the LEGO ideas creative lead to ask if I could help out. Sam had done a lot of work on the model already, such as establishing the overall size, what microscale spacecraft would be included etc. but asked me to help out with polishing the model for the final quality meeting before design hands over the sets to production and packaging.

But we had a challenge with the mechanism that would hold the massive solar panel arrays while allowing them to turn. Gears, axles and turntables were tried, but the solar panels are so massive that they always sagged, making for a neat ISS Banana, but that's not what we wanted. Using the larger technic turntables that snap into each other was also explored, but that would go away from the reference too much. As it turns out, with the advantage of microgravity, the area of the real ISS where we had to hide the rotation point is actually hollow. Using the 2x2 bricks with the large ball joints solved our problem, as it was compact enough to hide in the build while staying as true as possible to the real thing and minimized sagging.

Aside from the technical challenges of the model, there was also a lot of research done to figure out what details to include, since the ISS has changed a lot in terms of what sensors and experimental modules are installed on it.

One obvious thing to address is that the microscale shuttle included in the set is not in scale with the rest of the station. But, as some have pointed out already, the shuttle in 31091 does match it quite well.

Original ideas submission by Christoph R., final design by Sam J. and me. Graphics by Crystal F.

Two boats in a row? Yes indeed! It's been a while since the last police boat for the prison island police, so to mix things up a little we decided to make a new one. One thing that stood out about the previous police boats was that they tended to be pretty flat towards the bow, with the wheelhouse located aft. I really wanted to differentiate this ship and give it a speedy look, so the wheelhouse was moved forward, which is where the big, angled windshields and blue wing pieces came in quite handy. Very happy with how this one turned out and that each part of the model has some sort of play function. Austin from the graphic design team created the stickers and figures for this set, including the police diver, which we also haven't done in a while. We decided to give the boat a playful touch and more personality by adding the shark graphic on the hull. For the story, my colleague Nathan came up with a really cute little submarine that looked like a fish, which we carried over into the final model as the means by which Hank and Frankie, the crooks, try to abscond with a safe full of gold. And yes, the Bohrok Eyes/Teeth are a Bionicle reference, but in this case also facilitate the launching function for the scuba scooter.

My one contribution to the Wildlife theme. A fun little model to work on, it's been a while since we've had a hovercraft in City and it was cool to be able to include one of the then-new monkeys as well.

Monster Trucks? Monster Trucks!

From the moment we decided to go with Stuntz as a theme this year, I knew there would need to be at least one monster truck in the theme, so before we even had briefs or a concrete direction for the sets, I set out to find a way to build a monster truck that had a working suspension while being easy to build for the intended age group. Which was fortunate, because the rest of the development for this set became my 2020 lockdown project. Which, trying to design an action toy from home with limited access to the new flywheel bikes, made testing difficult. But in the end, it all worked out, thankfully. Hopefully everyone has as much fun playing with the bikes as we had during development!

PS: Since the monster truck chassis is very modular in design, please feel free to design your own monster truck on top of it, that was one of the intentions for the design =)

PPS: The monster trucks are actually able to do a pretty cool backflip if you push down on the back the right way. That feature wasn't part of the brief, but a cool trick that just resulted from the way the suspension is integrated. So cool in fact, marketing decided to show it off in the commercial for the Stuntz theme!

Concept and final model by me, graphics by Austin C.

I was tasked with designing the magazine models for the second half of 2021. They are obviously very small - which comes with its own set of challenges for including functions or more expensive elements. Thankfully, my colleague Luka solved the issue of turning brushes in set 60249, and it worked great here.
