A new style of set for the theme

Written by (TFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in United Kingdom,

This is a more unusual set for Ninjago as it is presented as a battle pack, common in the Star Wars theme. Ninjago has had blister accessory packs before this one, but this is the first boxed one. It is an excellent deal for the price, with 4 minifigures in addition to a reasonable mech.

The mech is a fun little build, with lots of articulation that allows for a variety of poses due to the light weight. It has a large blade and stud shooters, which are helpful for play scenarios. It, like the larger mechs of this wave, has waist articulation, which is some nice continuity. The swords make some cute antennae when attached to the back.

The key draw here are the 4 minifigures. All are nicely detailed, with the ninja currently being exclusive, and the wolf warriors being good generic villains. The wolf mask/hood is very well sculpted, complimenting the prints on the rest of the minifigure.

Overall, I would recommend this set as a low price, high value set.

Koala with a side of human.

Written by (TFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in United Kingdom,

This minifigure has a nice set of prints - nothing to detailed, but perfect for a representation of the uniform typical of a conservationist. The dual moulded sleeves and boots are a nice touch. His hat is nice, with detailed hair. While it is a recolour fo Dustin's hat/hair, it works well. The faces are both happy - who wouldn't be with a koala?

Speaking of the koala, it is adorable and somewhat steals the show. It can hold a bar in its hands, although its ear limits some parts as it is close to the bar. I was able to get it to hold a katana, which looks really funny.

    This minifigure is definitely worthwhile!

    A great mech

Written by (TFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in United Kingdom,

This mech grabbed my attention when it was first revealed. The blue and white colour scheme with its slender design stood out to me.

The mech stands at a good height and has good shaping on the limbs. It is poseable with lots of joints (including knees), although ankles and elbows are somewhat limited. The feet do look like trainers to me. The cannons on the shoulder are the newer design and fire decently far, and the head is an interesting construction with the braid down the back. It carries 3 swords, which fit securely into the hands. While the two katanas are neat, the giant sword is a standout and allows for some wacky poses. The torso has an interesting angle in it, and the entire set was a fun build.

The minifigures are a decent selection, with Jay, Nya and three bone soldiers. None of these minifigures are exclusive but are all high quality, except for the face prints on the bone soldiers which are a bit translucent. The set also contains a Pixal bot, which is half a minifigure. It works well, and follows the precedent of the Ultra combo mech. The villains have a crossbow, which works surprisingly well.

The set would work well as a parts pack, with lots of blue bricks. Stickers are used well, but all but one are in pairs.

Overall I would highly recommend this set to almost anyone, especially if you like some of the recent larger mechs the theme has produced.

    A neat little Jet.

Written by (TFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in United Kingdom,

Having been a long time fan of the various Jay's Jets over the years (71790, 70668, 70614 and 9442) I was curious how they were going to pull it of at the low price point. They did not fail to deliver here, with a fairly weighty jet that has a decent footprint and is very swooshable. The detail is nice with some printed tiles adorning the wings and some interesting builds for the intakes. While the cockpit isn't enclosed, my attempts to use other pieces to seal it up were not particularly successful. It detracts less than I initially thought. Two tile shooters are attached on the side in a useful place to fire in flight, but that runs the risk of losing the tiles.

The singular minifigure, core Jay, is nothing to write home about. The minifigure is fine but appears in plenty of sets. It is a great example of why you don't need conflict in a box for every set, as I don't think another minifigure is required for this set to feel complete.

I would recommend this set to most ages as it is a cool build at an excellent price point.

    Nothing too special

Written by (TFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in United Kingdom,

The magazine gifts have long been a way to get minifigures cheaply, such as 892061 or 892307. While Dragons Rising Jay is relatively inexpensive, also appearing in 71790, this is still a nice minifigure to add to a collection, with an interesting new headgear set up and a visor faceprint, such as the ones seen on Prime Empire ninja (see 71709), which makes them seem more ninja-esque and powerful, with lightning under the eyes. There are two very common pearl gold katanas as well as a "crystal mace", which I would consider more of a flail. It reminds me a lot of the early spinner weapons (see 2175) and is a lot of fun to *ahem* flail around. The use of Chima crystals on the ends is nice, and it is quite funny that the McGuffin of the Ninjago replacement is used in the theme it was intended to succeed. This is quite a take it or leave it situation - some will find value but others definitely will not.
