Available from 1st April at LEGO.com

Inspiring fans to fire up their brick building engines, the LEGO Group and Universal Brand Development have revealed a brand new three-in-one reproduction of one of the most iconic vehicles of all time – the Back to the Future DeLorean Time Machine.

Inspired by the DeLorean car seen in the time travelling adventure film franchise from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, the LEGO Back to the Future Time Machine set allows builders to create the car from either the first, second or third film. What’s more, it comes complete with a light-up flux capacitor, a box of plutonium, Marty’s hoverboard and LEGO minifigure versions of Doc Brown and Marty McFly.

“Universal, Amblin Entertainment and the Back to the Future filmmakers are delighted to have partnered with the LEGO team in the creation of this fantastic kit,” said Bob Gale, co-writer and co-producer of the trilogy. “In the film, Doc Brown spent almost 30 years and his entire family fortune to build his Time Machine. Fortunately, you’ll be able to build this LEGO model in significantly less time and with far less expense – although your completed version will be unable to travel through time!”

To celebrate the launch, the LEGO Group is taking Doc and Marty back on one more mission in the new “Brick to the Future” animated short. Premiering at LEGO.com/bttf today, the adventure sees the intrepid LEGO minifigure duo race through time to try and retrieve the lost Flux Capacitor.

In addition, the LEGO Group went back to where it all started – the famous Backlot at Universal Studios in Hollywood, where Back to the Future was filmed, to capture the three LEGO models alongside the original DeLorean Time Machine as seen in the films.

"This has been an incredibly exciting project to collaborate with the LEGO Group on – from Easter eggs that nod to each of the three Back to the Future films, to iconic elements from the DeLorean Time Machine like Mr. Fusion, to making Doc Brown and Marty McFly into mini figures – the fans are going to love going back in time with this LEGO set,” said Joe Lawandus, senior vice president and general manager, global toys and hardlines for Universal Brand Development.

Proving that if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything. Our brick builders will have to choose which Back to the Future Time Machine they want to create first, as each build requires elements from the full set.

Faithfully recreated details from the film trilogy include wheels that fold down for flight mode, the iconic light-up flux capacitor, dashboard dates, opening gull-wing doors and hood and many more Easter eggs including Marty’s hoverboard and swappable licence plates. The set even comes with a banana and tin can, to power the Mr. Fusion device as seen on the vehicle at the end of the first film.

Sven Franic, LEGO Set Designer commented: “Since its release in the 1985, Back to the Future continues to be a cult film and a favourite for generations of fans all over the world – including myself. I had so much fun reliving my favourite moments from all three films on this exciting and nostalgic design adventure.

“The shared timelessness of LEGO bricks and the Back to the Future franchise is something we really wanted to capture for this set, so we hope fans will enjoy racing through time in LEGO style.”

The new LEGO Back to the Future Time Machine set will be available for the recommended retail price of £149.99 / $169.99 / €169.99 from 1st April 2022.

  • Measures 35cm long
  • Features three distinct building options: choose which car from the Back to the Future films you want to build first; rebuild to create the other versions (all three versions cannot be built simultaneously from the single set)
  • Set features Doc Brown and Marty McFly incarnated as LEGO minifigures
  • Faithfully recreated details from the three films include: tyres that fold down for flight mode, the iconic light-up flux capacitor, dashboard dates, opening gull-wing doors and hood, and a variety of other Easter eggs like Marty’s hoverboard and swappable licence plates
  • Features windscreen and shaping element for the front of the DeLorean which are new to LEGO

Absolute day 1 buy. I’ve wanted this for so long.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I had no idea this was coming. This set looks perfect!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Forget Star Wars, this is the UCS vehicle I have been waiting for.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

My friend told me if there was one LEGO set she'd buy, it'd be the BTTF DeLorean.

Great Scott do I have some WONDERFUL news for her.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Wow, that looks fantastic, only issue is that I'm not sure if I prefer the BTTF 1 or 2 model.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

This one definitely goes on my wish list! It would be my first Creator Expert car. Don't get me wrong: I like most of these cars but money and space limitations put constraints on the amount of LEGO I can collect. Since I love the BTTF movies so much, this set is definitely something I want to purchase one day.

Gravatar
By in United States,

...but we got a superior Hoverboard in the Lego Dimensions set. Oh, well.

I'm mentally wondering how many Dimensions vehicles will eventually be remade as large-scale models. Anyone up for a giant TARDIS?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wish Ninjago summer 2022 wasn't so expensive.....

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've never had a strong attachment to this vehicle, but this set makes me wish I did - it looks incredible, just a first-rate set in every way.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very nice build, and nice price.

Gotta call out that Marty minifig tho. He has a unique face print, why are they throwing that out for the generic face they’ve been using on young Han, Cedric Diggory and the like? I get cost cutting but it doesn’t fit McFly much at all.

Well we had our chance at the Mystery Machine but sadly it didn't pass review...

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

The new Marty figure looks weird. Why did they give him cheek lines?

Gravatar
By in United States,

AMAZING! I really hope the third unknown speed champions summer wave set is a delorean (modified or normal version, I don't really care which), but we'll just have to see, either way as much as I love how this works, I'm going to wait for the eventual minifig-scale version

Gravatar
By in United States,

My god it's beautiful. Struggling to understand the scale of it but, man, I love it.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

The prices of the Dimensions figs are gonna skyrocket.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Looks awesome!!! Option to build all 3 different cars from the 3 films is great!!
That doc figure is fantastic!! :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

As Doc Brown once said, "This is the big one, the one I've been waiting for all my life!"

The new LEGO Back to the Future Time Machine set will be available for the recommended retail price of £149.99 / $169.99 / €169.99 from 1st April 2022.

I sincerely hope this is not a very cruel April Fool's joke...

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I want this

Gravatar
By in United States,

If you had told me that the first recolor of Bo Peep's staff would be in a BttF set, I wouldn't have believed you.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have been waiting for years…. But I hope it looks better in person. The front and rear angles look awesome in the pics but the sides and doors are seemingly so flat and uninspired. Especially the door windows surrounds. ECTO-1 has been one of my favorite recent builds and has taken up a spot of honor on my desk, so hopefully this one will turn out just as good.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks great!

I hope eventually LEGO starts doing more of these.

Universal Studios also produced Emergency!; so a LEGO Squad 51 would be pretty cool!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great Scott!! This is heavy news! I love it!
Going to have to display all 3 versions in a plexi case.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Is this one of the first big D2C sets that didn’t get leaked way before reveal? (Not counting word leaks, just pics)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Where's the poll option for "I told my brother about this, and now my sister-in-law is upset with both of us"???

So it looks like this is one of those “not really minifig scale but sort of”? Kind of like the London bus?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I never saw these movies growing up, so I don't have the same nostalgia for them that some do, but even I can appreciate that this is an awesome rendition of the DeLorian. The way the fusion reactor opens up just so you can put a banana in is so very Lego...

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Pretty much perfect!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

looks great! I was wondering why they made that 2x4 sloped roof piece at an angle in the SW set, but I'm pretty sure this is the answer! They did a nice job on the angles. I also really love the Doc minifigure

Anyone want to wager on how large a % of the comments of the review will be along the lines of 'why not all drum-lacquered pieces'?

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Day 1, baby!

Gravatar
By in United States,

TIme to spend my VIP points!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Great Scott!!! I eventually got rid of the original BTTF Delorean set because I thought it just looked terrible, whatever angle you looked at it from. But this is definitely a keeper! Can't wait to build it.

I think the accessories (including the banana) are fooling your brain. Yeah, minifigs would look toddler-sized in there at best.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

"Wait a minute, Doc - are you telling me you built a time machine... out of LEGO?"

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Cars bore & annoy me, but THIS??

SIGN. ME. UP.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

"This is heavy!"

I'd like to triple like this article, but I can't :'(

Now we'll have BTTF I and II versions of Marty and Doc; will there ever be a set featuring their BTTF III (i.e. old West) versions? I'm only thinking about the train, but that would be extremely surprising…

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Absolutely Amazing! Definitely getting this. Will look great displayed with the Minifigure scale DeLorean.

I can see certain Lego You Tubers "buying" three of these to have all 3 versions built at the same time.

Now we need a minifigure scale Time Train with Doc & Marty 1885 minifigures!

I'd love anything Doctor Who. Such a wide range of things that could be made from that show!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Easily a day one buy! I've been waiting for LEGO to make an actually good Delorean Time Machine ever since 2013, when they released that awful small scale one, which was way too small to get any sort of detail in. This is literally top tier for quality vs. price. Love it!

Gravatar
By in Spain,

The wait was worth it...

Gravatar
By in United States,

This looks absolutely great! It's a bit out of my price range, but I'll try to Bricklink the new Doc & Marty figs. I have the original Ideas set, and I would really love Lego to remake it. The Ideas version just doesn't capture the look of the DeLorean like this does.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks just spectacular. They really nailed it on this one. I’m on the fence just cuz I don’t spend a ton of money on Lego, but it’s really tempting me.

Cheek lines make him look like Tim Cruise to me. "

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

64% of yes at the time of read.
Wonder what have been the (new) sets with the best/worst responses on brickset since the polls have been introduced.
The box art and Lego rendition do look great.
Hope they do a mini version (8-stud wide) as GWP.

@DOLEGO1986 Time train would be awesome indeed!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

In the video, is it too much to hope that I see the rumoured 90th anniversary castle 10305 (possibly including an enormous unleaked trebuchet) among the Blacksmith, last year's Creator 3-in-1 castle, the MMV, and the Mill Village Raid?

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Two weeks?....I need this...I need this now. I can't wait!

Even more selfishly, I kind of wish this was released a bit later in the year when the Lego shop in Ireland has opened so I could get it physically on day one. Ah well, will be ordering it on day one, then the impatient countdown to delivery will begin.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Does the LEGO Model have the iconic gull-wing doors? Can’t see it on any of the images?

Gravatar
By in United States,

This looks terrific! I'm not too into the large car sets, but I may pick this one up. To me there is never such a thing as a day 1 purchase unless a set has a limited availability, such as the Bespin Duel. This way I avoid the hype and know if I still really want a set a year or two later.

but it takes the windscreen supports with it? or is it meant to do that?

Gravatar
By in United States,

The fourth build mode would be to dump out all the parts unassembled, representing the DeLorean's final appearance at the end of BTTFIII.

Gravatar
By in France,

This is really nice but I would much rather buy a minifig scale version even for a quarter of that price.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It is a very nice set, but I don't plan to get it. I haven't collected any of these scale cars. I hope that they'll do a Speed Champion version as well. I have the original Cuusoo set, but every time I look at it, I'm disappointed with how terrible it looks.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like that they've included details for all 3 Delorian versions, but its a shame some of them are just slightly off. I know we've gotta cope with the limitation of lego bricks trying to represent a very angular vehicle, but they've managed to recreate other vehicles more accurately I feel.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Been saving my points for this for ages now. It's beautiful!

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

So excited about this one. Can’t wait to get it!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

My all-time favorite movie. So I have to have it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

YES!!! This turned out even better than I imagined.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Easy purchase for me. This build shows how much LEGO has changed ever since the original Cuusoo set released. Thankfully, I got both the original figures through LEGO Dimensions

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've been dismissive of large, expensive UCS sets but this one is really good, imo. The kicker is getting parts to build all three cars. That elevates the set from good to very good.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not bad. Another reason not to buy that McLaren...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I just fainted. So thrilled!!!

Can't wait to see the display cases Wicked Bricks will produce, too.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great Scott! I’m having a heart attack. It’s beautiful!

Gravatar
By in Spain,

> all three versions cannot be built simultaneously from the single set

It can, but not in the same timeline.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Of course they didn’t explicitly make it a beer can, unlike what the rumors stated.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Gorgeous!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@CDM said:
"My god it's beautiful. Struggling to understand the scale of it but, man, I love it."

35.5cm long, 11cm high.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm glad to see they included minifigures here! I don't think they're necessary for a set of this size, but it's always a nice bonus.

Gravatar
By in United States,

1872 pieces? The could have added another 113 parts so that the count would be the year 1985 (like they did for the Saturn V rocket's 1969 piece count)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wow, they've left two studs exposed on each side just so (for once) it actually looks like a Lego version.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

They should have added 29 more pieces to give 1885 the time of the 3rd film, where the Jules Verne train would look great in Lego..

Gravatar
By in United States,

So, BttF fission drive and lightning drive, BttF2 hover version, BttF3 50’s tires, but still no train wheels? Also, Doc Brown is wearing a 2015 outfit, but is Marty as well? I’ve got plenty of BttF1 versions of both (I got nine copies of the Ideas sets, plus 3x Dimensions Marty and 2x Dimensions Doc), so filling in some of the many other outfits they wore during the trilogy would be heavy.

@CharzBoi:
Ironically, doing a street version would require obtaining a DeLorean license. The DeLorean estate tried to go after Universal for taking full advantage of their contractual rights to license merchandise based on the film cars, which somehow didn’t require much, if any, royalties be paid to DMC. Courts upheld the contract terms, and the DeLorean estate got nothing.

@TheOtherMike:
Isn’t there a pink one in Build-a-Minifig?

@monkyby87:
I’m pretty sure the Ideas set can park on the hood, if not actually inside the passenger compartment.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If I didn't already have the smaller one, this one would easily be on the list. But I don't know, I'm having a hard time considering buying this when it feels a bit more like re-buying it.

The joke would be whether or not stores will have adequate stock on the 1st. Local store only had 8 McLaren F1's and 2 Vespa 125's at store opening on March 1st.

@AHYL88:
Black backgrounds may have been due to Family Ties. Fox was their preferred actor, but couldn’t get out of his sitcom contract, so they cast someone else. The other guy wasn’t working out, so they reportedly mutually agreed he should part ways after one day of filming. They revisited the idea of casting Fox, and the network agreed on condition that it not conflict with his shooting schedule for Family Ties. Since that shot during the day, BttF was limited to nights and weekends. To make the movie happen, a lot of it had to take place at night, and the DeLorean surrounded by either lightning or flames against a night sky was just too cool to ignore when it came time to merchandise the film.

@Goujon:
On a real DeLorean, the cabin has regular A pillars and large B pillars framing the opening for the door. The door has a large window that’s completely surrounded by matching frame, with a tiny window at center bottom that I think is all that rolls down (forget picking up large food orders in the drive-thru). The same entire weight of the lower half of the door has to be supported by those thin frames, with whatever assistance they get from the unusual window design, so no, they absolutely do not have glass all the way to the edge of the door.

@kyrodes:
There are several instances of the DeLorean being present two or more times simultaneously. It’s not that you need multiple timelines to make it work. It’s that you create multiple timelines by doing this.

@Sutures:
I’m seeing 1856pcs. Did that get adjusted?

Gravatar
By in United States,

On sets like this, I always read the first poll option as “Yes, as soon as it is back in stock”

Gravatar
By in United States,

YES

But dang it's expensive though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Simply fantastic! And they went the extra mile and made it possible to build all three.

I passed on 21103 because it looked like garbage. But this? Day One buy!

Gravatar

Batteries included. Enough for 1.2 GW?

Gravatar

The way I see it, if you're going to build a Lego set into a car, why not do it with some style?

Gravatar
By in United States,

At least they spelled "shield" correctly this time

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Slow down Lego... I've still got half the March releases to get! I think this might have just jumped to the front of the queue though!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wish they gave us 6 figs.
First movie Marty and Doc in white lab coat, then this pair here from II, and then cowboy costume Marty and Doc in cowboy duster, hat, etc. w/steampunk styled rifle.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Since the minifigures are based on BTTF 2, I'm surprised they haven't included Marty's rainbow coloured cap. Now need to pick up the previous BTTF 1 figures, and hope to see BTTF 3 figures.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Now if you don't like the Star Wars tax in The ManDeLorean sets, you can get a regular DeLorean!

Gravatar

THIS COULD BE THE BIGGEST THING EVER.......IN TERMS OF AN AMAZING APRIL FOOLS BY THE LG.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Man, I really hope that they do something like this for Lord of the Rings. It's been about the same amount of time since they made those sets. Sigh... Probably not. Still, this is one great looking set. Not for me, but still beautiful.

Someone mentioned that on another site, and I am intrigued as well. The minifigs look great, I possibly see a forestgirl, a peasant, a market seller child, a woman buying, Lion knights, a cow, forestman, a couple of generic guards, and the blacksmith. I like all the building references, but I really want to see the main castle. Ah well, many months to wait.

There is nothing regular about this DeLorean. People talk about what’s the most famous TV/movie car of all time, and throw out whatever happens to just be their favorite one. This is the true answer. I’ve seen people pose for photos with stock DeLoreans in parking lots, trying to recreate one of the movie posters. There is no other mass-produced car on the planet that elicits that reaction.

Same size as the other Creator Expert sports cars like 10295 Porsche 911 and 10265 Mustang.

With the inclusion of the plutonium sticker on the yellow case we might end up with a repeat of Dinky's radioactive waste controversy caused by their Space 1999 Eagle Freighter.

Gravatar

Not sure if I'm sold on the front window frame, but it's an impressive set for a reasonable price so will get this one down the road for sure.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Rather pricey and as usual way too many stickers (the one on the Mr. Fusion even looks terrible on he box art....), but other that that this is so cool! Absolute must have!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh yes! Yes!!! Finally! I can put this next to my UCS A-Wing!

When you're writing a LEGO Press release and need to hit that minimum word count:

Nearly perfect, but could have included 13 more pieces…

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I feel sorry for all the people who bought the first version of this.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I could hardly be more excited... until I saw that everything is stickers. Even the flux capacitor.

Stickers destroy my enjoyment of a model so much that I refuse to pay three figures for a set which has them. If I can pick it up cheap at some point... maybe, but what would otherwise be a no-brainer for me is just a plain no for now.

Gravatar

"I feel sorry for all the people who bought the first version of this."

Oh god, that one was just awful. It didn't even look like the car. If you bought it back then, you knew what you're getting into.

Having said that, it's been almost 10 years since, so it's nothing like the "Star Wars" sets recycles and I'm sure they can sell it and fund some of the new car, some collectors will buy that for sure.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Gravatar
By in United States,

I didn't realize that the 1x6 Technic slope (2744) has been in and out of production in recent sets, even just last year, but it seems we will get it in dark blueish grey now as well. It's used in the door frame and can be seen at 0:46 in the promotional video.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the concept, but it looks Technic-y...and I LOATHE technic.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@morvit:
Cheapest New listing at present is $166.23, which is $3.76 shy of paying for this. 21103, while more in scale with modern Speed Champions than minifigs, could at least fit in a layout, where this will sprawl over it.

In terms of minifigs, I could go either way. Marty is identical to his Dimensions release, but came with the unique hoverboard element, while Doc Brown got a better hairstyle in 71230.

There are other benefits. I said I got nine copies of the Ideas set. One stays sealed, and I built four into the basic looks (1985, 2015, 1955, 1885). The other four are slightly modified for use on layouts until I get around to designing 6-wide MOCs, at which point I can canibalize them for any useful parts (specifically the printed elements).

Gravatar
By in United States,

One of the best sets recently. Good to see more large iconic vehicles that are not SW.

The video definitely shows a "new" castle with Lion knights on it. If you pause it in the right places you can get a good view.

No, that windscreen isn't new. It's the same one used in the Creator Expert F40 Ferrari (and then in that shades-of-blue Creator 3-in-1 the year after).

Looks fantastic and a definite purchase. Still need to get the ECTO-1 and Tumbler first, though...

Close, but this one is new. The ones you mentioned are 12 studs tapering down to 8.
This new windscreen is the same basic shape, but 14 studs tapering down to 10.

I was really excited for this, but not so sure now. The side profile is just out of proportion cant put my figure on it, I think that it just looks too short. The side window should be 2 studs longer or maybe the bottom of the window panel 1 on 2 plates lower? Perhaps replacing the 1x2 wedges with a tile ? It just makes the car look too high, compare it to a profile of the real car and see what you think!

It isn’t. I’ve been to 1 April 2022 and it was/will be released that day.

What? No way. You could have 100 people drive a DB5 to any random event and stand next to the cars after they’ve parked, and someone is going to walk up and ask one of them if they wouldn’t mind moving their “Mercedes” so they can get a clear photo of the DeLorean sitting in the next space.

Look, the DeLorean is a terrible sports car that handles badly, has a low top speed, and often leaks around the door seals. In 1984, you’d have had a hard time getting someone to take one in trade for a Fiero. Now, it’s a collectible car, all on the power of these three films. There’s even a business that has started taking leftover spare parts and assembling brand new DeLoreans because there’s still demand for them. If you took any custom TV/movie car, stripped it down to factory stock, and painted it any random color, the DeLorean is the one car that will still be recognized by a majority of people. The BttF DeLorean is so iconic that people still see this version of the car when all the movie trim has been removed.

By in United States,

Quite nice, even if I do have to agree they should really move past stickers for sets like this.

This is now the fifth Back to the Future set LEGO has done, after a LEGO Ideas set, two LEGO Dimensions packs, and a Brickheadz set. If one got one of each set so far (including this one) and built them, one would have four figures apiece (three minifigures and one brick-built figure) of Doc Brown and Marty (including two identical figures of Marty and two very-near identical figures of Doc Brown), three different versions of the DeLorean time machine (at different scales), two different versions of the hoverboard (at different scales) (or is the conventional skateboard in the Ideas set meant to represent it as well?), and a handful of random additional items (most notably a tiny version of the time train). Obviously Doc Emmett Brown, Marty McFly, and the DeLorean time machine are the three most iconic elements in this franchise and it makes sense that they’re what LEGO returns to time and again (heh), but given that they seem to return to this theme every so often, I wonder whether they might ever do more with the license than just variations on these three aspects (i.e., figures of any other characters besides these two, a larger version of the time train than the one in the LEGO Dimensions Fun Pack, any location, etc.). Or might they simply take another stab at a minifigure-scale version of the car, that more people are happy with? Or will this set be the Back to the Future thing they do - their final word on the franchise?

No, I very briefly considered that possibility when building my first Ideas set, but Marty does ride a skateboard early in the first movie. I don’t have the movie handy, but I recall that he leans it against something in Doc Brown’s house before hooking his guitar up to the amp, he arrives at Twin Pines Mall on it (and I think he tosses it into the DeLorean before escaping). He skeetches on Biff’s car in 1955, but I can’t recall if that’s his own skateboard or the scooter he destroyed. And it explains how he can ride the hoverboard in 2015. After that, though, they never go back to a basic skateboard for the rest of the trilogy.

What I don’t know is if dark-purple is at all accurate for Marty’s original deck. Tan would be most accurate for the busted scooter.

I always figured the joke was they picked the worst, most unreliable car currently on the market to turn into a time machine.

I mean, I know Marty canonically has a skateboard; I just wasn’t certain whether the one included in the Ideas set was meant to represent that or the hoverboard. Either is plausible, but since the one in the set is a full skateboard with wheels, I’m leaning towards the former.

There probably aren’t many worse sports cars they could have picked, but there definitely were worse cars in general. Imagine how drastically the plot could have changed if Doc Brown picked a Pinto wagon. Jay Leno has a car in his collection that gets 10 gallons to the mile, so what happens if they forget to fill the tank right before the clock tower?

Originally, the script called for a fridge, which just ends up with a bunch of kids dying in junkyards (or not, because the movie probably wouldn’t have been very successful without the car). They decided to use a car instead, since it allowed the time machine to be mobile, and the DeLorean was picked because it had a unique design, the gull wing doors worked as a
UFO (an important plot point), and I think the stainless steel skin may have helped sell the idea.

Now, if I had to pick a real vehicle to turn into a time machine, and they could just boost the speed about 30%, I’d have to give serious consideration to a Ripsaw.

By in United States,

It's a pretty cool set—I could see this getting my wife into LEGO. But the whitewall tires don't look good enough and wagon/train wheels as an option are missing, leaving BTTF3 Delorean options a let-down. Good thing the other two options are quite good.

In the end of the third movie, when Marty goes back to 1985 and the door fails closed when he tries to get out before the train hits the DeLorean, this is actually a gag about a known production issue that affected brand new DMC-12s. There are also other references to the car issues in the trilogy, like the low power of the engine. About the engine turning off out of nowhere and the starting problems, it is just the space-time continuum preserving itself from paradoxes :)

There’s probably a reference to how frustrating the cars must have been in the fact that they actually staged the scene of the DeLorean being smashed by a train by actually smashing the B car (used for stunts) with a train.

Wonder why the blurb mentions the name DeLorean multiple times but it's nowhere on the box... The set is call 'Back to the Future Time Machine', the little plaque says 'Manufacturer: Dr E. Brown Enterprises'. Apart from the logo on the grille there's nothing that says it's a DeLorean.

I believe it's the case that the rights holders successfully argued they had transformed the car enough that it was now legally distinct and, most importantly for them, they no longer needed to pay DeLorean to use it. As such it's possible to license The Time Machine without needing the okay from DeLorean - so any hopes this will lead to a regular DeLorean set might be in vain!

Some years ago, a 1:15 miniature of the DeLorean time machine was launched without the DMC logo (picture from Amazon below). The reason was that the toy manufacturer acquired the licence from Universal, but not from DMC. I wonder if LEGO also has the rights to use the car brand on the set, if it is now fair use to to show the DMC logo only paying the rigths to Universal, or if it was an (unlikely) oversight from TLG. It would be interesting to know if the DMC trademark is shown inside the manual or somewhere in the box, I hope Huw can check this in the review.

@1265:
“You keep using this word “iconic”. I do not think it means what you think it means.” - Engino Montoyota

We’re talking cars that are recognizable to the masses. The DB5 had a few scenes in a few Bond films, and it’s absolutely the signature car of both the film series and the character, but it’s not even his most iconic car. The Lotus Esprit is the one that will remind more people of James Bond if they see one driving down the street. Meanwhile, the DeLorean had a starring role in three films. It probably got more screen time in the first film than the DB5 got in all six. It was integral to the success of that first film, and without it I’m not sure there would have been one sequel, much less two, plus an animated series, plus a theme park ride, plus still be selling merchandise over two decades after the films ended. I’ve seen die-cast versions from all three films in three different scales, plus larger plastic versions, and it’s getting a third LEGO set. I have four BttF DeLorean t-shirts in my closet, have passed on at least 2-3x that number, and have yet to see even a single DB5 shirt, Bond or otherwise.

Is it a great car? Absolutely not. Given the choice between the two models of car, stock, undriven, and neither an actual screen-used copy, I’d take the DB5 in a heartbeat. And then I’d sell it for a lot more than a basic DeLorean is worth. But if you offered people a chance to test-drive the restored BttF “A” DeLorean or any of the DB5’s that Bond has driven, I think you’d be surprised by the results.
