Review: 76908 Lamborghini Countach

Posted by ,

Speed Champions provides an enjoyable range of classic vehicles, which have generally proven impressive! The famous Lamborghini Countach certainly merits recreation, especially since this vehicle's distinctive angular bodywork appears completely suitable for LEGO.

76908 Lamborghini Countach therefore seems instantly recognisable in official images, replicating the distinctive shapes which characterise this 1980s icon. Additionally, the model includes relatively few stickers and instead prioritises complex building techniques to recreate important features from the Lamborghini Countach.

Summary

76908 Lamborghini Countach, 262 pieces.
£19.99 / $19.99 / €24.99 | 7.6p/7.6c/9.5c per piece.

The magnificent Lamborghini Countach appears equally spectacular in LEGO form!

  • Almost perfect shaping
  • Numerous accurate details
  • Good colour choices, inside and out
  • Poor windscreen colour matching

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Minifigure

Outstanding minifigures are not necessarily associated with Speed Champions, but this driver wears a suitable jacket with Lamborghini branding. The metallic silver zip looks good and I like the dark blue accents too, highlighting creases across the jacket. These subtle details perfectly complement the minifigure's dark blue legs.

Unfortunately, the helmet lacks the Lamborghini emblem. Black was certainly an appropriate colour choice though and the visor opens, as always. The head underneath is quite common and features two cheerful expressions, alongside some stubble.

An alternative dark brown hair piece is also provided, while the requisite wrench can be used when removing the wheel inserts. These accessories have appeared since the beginning of Speed Champions, so provide a degree of continuity across the range, despite the updated scale.

The Completed Model

Few vehicles rival the recognition of the Lamborghini Countach and this rendition is incredibly accurate! The shaping most closely resembles the LP500 S and looks fantastic, capturing the sharp angles and sweeping curvature associated with this subject. Furthermore, the length of 15cm seems reasonable alongside other Speed Champions cars, while the white colour looks marvellous too.

Viewing the model from either side demonstrates its beautifully smooth shape, which continues throughout its length. The curvature towards the rear appears particularly appealing and I love the printed wheel caps, which are immediately recognisable. The distinctive air ducts situated behind the doors are less accurate, although I appreciate the avoidance of stickers here.

The headlights have been subject to particular criticism on past Speed Champions cars, often relying heavily upon stickers and sometimes divided across several elements. Fortunately, the model only includes 13 stickers. The indicator and parking lights are cleverly constructed using trans-clear 1x1 bricks, which display the orange indicator lights beneath these bricks.

Ironically, removing the bonnet reveals that those orange details are formed using stickers, but they are unobtrusive. The detailing across the front looks excellent too, including lighting pods and the Lamborghini symbol. The famed pop-up headlights, which would rise from behind the indicator and parking light housings, cannot open, but they are represented using clear-backed stickers.

The windscreen component is printed and captures the shape of the Lamborghini Countach's windscreen nicely. However, the colour matching between this decoration and the surrounding white elements is awful. The absence of opening scissor doors is perhaps disappointing as well, but the Speed Champions design manager, Christopher Stamp, has divulged that scissor doors were attempted during development.

Unfortunately, their inclusion was impossible because the windows needed to remain static, so excluding the opening doors was sensible. The interior is instead accessible by detaching the windscreen, revealing red leather inside! This vibrant colour absolutely suits the ostentatious Countach and there is space for two minifigures, as usual.

The dramatic radiator intakes are angled outwards, further reflecting the source material. The stickered engine cover appears excellent too. However, there is no room for the engine inside because that space is instead needed to secure the angled bodywork, using Technic pieces to achieve the correct shape. These elements are completely hidden upon completion.

Simple clips support the 2x2 curved slopes underneath, which feature the same angle. These panels envelop trans-red 1x1 cones, recreating the unusual light clusters located at the rear of the Lamborghini Countach. They look absolutely brilliant and the exhausts are equally accurate, but can be dislodged quite easily. The wing is impressive too, but can be removed if you prefer.

Overall

Speed Champions has hugely improved since the scale was enlarged and 76908 Lamborghini Countach is among my favourite models yet, befitting this beloved sports car! This review has repeatedly praised the accurate body shape and deservedly so, since the Countach captures wonderful detail from every angle. Compromises are present, but most are unavoidable.

The poor colour consistency between the bodywork and the decorated windscreen is therefore particularly frustrating because that could have been avoided. Even so, I am delighted with this model, costing a reasonable £17.99, $19.99 or €19.99 and joining the modern Lamborghini pair from 76899 Lamborghini Urus ST-X & Huracán Super Trofeo EVO.

This is the first of the Speed Champion sets I have been first-day-purchase excited about.

This will go very nicely with my 76895 Ferrari F8 Tributo!

So much detail!

There are some cool picks in the 2022 Speed Champions wave, but this is my favorite. I plan to pick it up soon after release.

By in United States,

Great! However, wheels aren't quite right. Rear should be larger than the front, and they should be recessed more. That's the only thing that stood out to me (other than lack of scissor doors already mentioned in the article). Cool though!

By in Netherlands,

It's a shame about that windscreen piece. Please Lego, get your act together, about every cheap Chinese clone brand has better printing quality. And like I have said so often: I don't mind premium prices as long as we get premium quality.

Otherwise it's about as perfect as you can get at this scale, without resorting to specialized pieces. Even the number of stickers is acceptable, although I obviously wouldn't have minded (decent quality) prints. And I especially like what they did with the headlights! So great review of a pretty good set!

Eh..... white.

Same. This looks SO good, windscreen aside. The shaping is nearly perfect, the fewer number of stickers, and it's just CLASSIC. I have one tiny adjustment I might try on the wing; I want to see what a vintage plane tail looks like on the back.

they don't have this type of wheels wider, and creating one is costly... i dont think we will have them anytime soon

By in Ireland,

Tippex should fix the colour consistency issue.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Thanks for calling out the bad colour matching and for providing a photo of the real thing.

Seriously Lego, how hard can it be to print in the same colour as the bricks the print is supposed to match? Very hard apparently, as you never fix it, or don't you think it's a problem? Such a shame for an otherwise really great set.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

I'd get this if it wasn't for that poorly printed windscreen. I can look past printing issues in many cases, but you really can't ignore just how bad it looks in this case.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This looks to be one of the Speed Champions that is reliant on stickers. While most of the others have a lot of stickers, in most cases 9an all the ones I've bought) you can happily do without them, or make minor mods. For this, looks to be no way around using the stickers.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm looking forward to this set. Speed Champions is a highly underrated theme among some but this is what Lego is all about, building something I could never afford in real life.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This looks amazing! The car is beautiful and I think white was a good color choice. I'm glad they picked the 1980s one instead of the 2022 version, it just looks so much better. I also think there's no way it would look as good in the older speed champions style. I'll probably get this as soon as possible, and while I don't mind stickers at all, the clear backed ones do annoy me, so that's my only issue.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is actually one of the few cars that is recognizable without stickers due to brick build headlights and taillights. Others with stickered lights are completely unrecognizable without stickers.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wish it was in a color other than white. Red would have been my first choice. A darker color might have been easier to match with the windscreen too.

Lego, if you're doing more re-colors of models in the future, recolor this one please!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Built my own 6-wide years ago, but will still purchase it for the wheels.
More excited about the Lotus and Aston Martin Licenses, which hopefully translate to Bond cars as an offshoot of Speed Champions

Gravatar
By in United States,

The only lamborghinis in town I've seen is a lime green one or an orange one. Supposedly Larry "The Cable Guy" drives the orange one since he has a house here. But I've never personally seen him and the windows are tinted enough I couldn't tell who was driving anyway. (This is big news since I live in the middle of the country and nothing happens here.)

Another white car...I guess we will wait how it looks in the future after the pieces yellow.

But otherwise I will definitely pick it up eventually. Looks good.

Exactly this. How long will this issue drag on ? Other than that: Love the design here. Lots of good decissions in a small package. Headlights (and rear lights) are excellent. White wouldn't have been my first choice either, but a red, black and yellow one should be easily to build on your own.

By far my favorite of this year's line up. Thx for the detailed review!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Had this been in yellow or red, I would have really expected it to transform!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like. I'll buy.
Am I the only one that really likes the white color choice? Looking forward to the inevitable MOCs in red and black. Blue, even...maybe yellow! ...and the resulting windshield issue.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I like all of it except the wheels. Those can be swapped out of course, and I can see what they were going for. Jerry Builds Bricks recently did a fairly accurate white Countach. I would like to build both.

Gravatar
By in United States,

How out of scale does it look near the Modular Buildings? It's a great model in its own right.

Gravatar
By in United States,

As a Transformers fan, I wish it came in Yellow... but this is a great rendition at this scale, especially those tail lights!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Argh, I was looking forward to this set but that windscreen printing kills it for me. My eyes Just *stare* at it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a beauty. I want this one and the Lotus Evija.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It’s gorgeous.

Often I find myself wishing that the love and care put into designing these vehicles would go into a new theme for vehicles that weren’t just racing. Since City is focalized for younger audience (and seems to go more simplified year after year) I want vehicles in 8+ wide minifigure scale that are thick and meaty. Bigger trucks, utility vehicles, specialty stuff.

Just a dream of mine…

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I do think this looks pretty good from most angles other than directly side on, which emphasises the gaps around the wheel arches. Still a must buy, once it gets the usual discount to around £13.99.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I love it. The whole theme has been incredible since going to the larger scale, it really allows for so much more detail, and this one is a perfect example of that. The whole March 1st wave will be a day one buy for me, and I always save the best for last, which will most likely be the Countach.
Funny side story, I had a Countach Hot Wheels as a kid and it slid under the fridge and stayed there for a good 10+ years until we had to replace the fridge. I won't be making the same mistake with this one :P

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Beautiful. Instant buy!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This would have been the first speed champions set I bought as the Countach was my dream car in my youth, but that windscreen is terrible so I shall not be bothering.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Great review, thank you.
I cannot unsee that unsightly windscreen :-(

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

That windscreen printing immediately draws my eyes to it on every photo where it's visible. This was supposed to be my first Speed Champions set (alongside the new Ferrari), but I think I'll pass.

Gravatar
By in Turkey,

I may buy this only to rebuild it 6 stud wide because I’m gonna drive it side by side with my 911. I hope it still looks this good

Gravatar
By in United States,

That is very cool.

That crank on the sides of the windshield reminds me of the Vector W8 more than the Countach, but it still works well.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

My most recent Countach encounter was with a white one ( https://flic.kr/p/2mmWK1e ) and this is pretty darn spot on. And finally an answer to what the hidden stickers are all about.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would buy this if not for the windscreen color problem. Rats, lovely build, horrible execution! My dollars will go somewhere else.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

It looks very good. Tempted to create some white stickers from another sticker sheet myself to fix the window, and do something about the wheels, with a concave part like a 2x2 dish or something. Otherwise it's perfect!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Day one purchase. For an official set it really is impressive what they've done here given the compromises the designers must make to meet quality requirements. But as many others have said: They MUST get the printing up to standards when it comes to white. These are premium priced products, and they need to be color matching their white printing to the white tone of their bricks to deliver a premium and consistent appearance. As it is, the windscreen looks as if it is intended for another set altogether. They have to get that right.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It looks like the windscreen off a different colour car it's that bad, I keep looking but I cannot see past it. Shame

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is my favorite Speed Champion set to date! This will go perfectly with the 80’s yuppie CMF from a few years ago.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Countach should be LEGO's next 18+ Creator Expert (whatever they call it now) car.
It would be so cool to have it in black and based on the Cannonball Run Lamborghini.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is absolutely a Day One Purchase for me.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Shut up and take my money please LEGO.
Going to see if I can turn it into the white Lamborghini from the
intro to Cannonball Run II (just need to find the right parts for the "couple of great looking chicks" :)

And yes a Creator Expert Lamborghini Countach would also be "Shut up and take my money"

Gravatar
By in Jordan,

Great review!
Looks like a good set overall but I see three big issues with it:

1. The shape of the NACA ducts is off.
2. The printing on the canopy is subpar.
3. It's a Lamborghini Countach ;)

This joins the McLaren Elva in being a great SC set based on a car I'm not a fan of in real life.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's a very faithful rendition. Instantly recognizable. I don't really associate a particular colour with the countach so white is fine.
But I am very hesitant to purchase due to the windscreen.
The printing is grey.
As the most expensive and reputable brick brand there should be little to no discrepancy in colouring.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'll add to the chorus of disapproval about the windscreen printing. I've already been disappointed with the same issue on 60225, and that was called out several years ago. NOT GOOD ENOUGH, LEGO!

It would otherwise be my first 8-wide purchase, but I'm not so sure now.

Always seems kind of strange to see the minifig with a helmet when it's a road going car without racing livery. Guess it's a serious owner who takes their Lambo on trackdays.

I'm waiting on the half red, half white to replicate the scene in Cannonball Run where they hose the paint off while avoiding the cops.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why hasn't someone sued TLG yet for false advertising with how they show the color opacity of printed parts like the windshield/canopy and certain heads in rendered marketing images that are NOT what you actually get in the box? Maybe such action is needed to light a fire under their collective assets to get some consumer satisfaction here.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This hits so solid for the late 80s/early 90s AFOL crowd!

Gravatar
By in Finland,

When they originally released the press info about this set, I was so excited and ready to buy this set day one. But because of the windscreen color mismatch, I really have to rethink things. A big shame, because Countach is my absolute favorite car. Why Lego, why?!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

As an 80's kid, i think this is a truly fantastic little model! I'm not a Speed Champions fan at all, but i might, i just might, consider this set.
It could serve as a wonderful display piece!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This will set the record for the least expensive set I will stay up until 11PM for release day to ensure I get before the inevitable OOS. I hope they made a lot of these.

The stickers... the stickers.....

Gravatar
By in United States,

Day 1 purchase! The Countach is my favorite Lambo design. Thank you LEGO for designing such an iconic supercar. I am disappointed that they didn't include it's famous doors, at least the designer tried. I modified my Huracan's doors to open properly, which is the first time I modified a set. I think the Countach looks fantastic, other than the windshield issue. I like the white but if they had made this in red, the windshield piece wouldn't have had the issue.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

It looks a bit like GTA Vice City's Infernus, in a nice way. The color mismatch is unacceptable, though.

"Fortunately, the model only includes 13 stickers." - this comment feels like a joke. That's exactly 13 stickers too many.
