Review: 30453 Captain Marvel and Nick Fury

Minifigures are often available in polybags and some actually include two characters, although this is relatively unusual. 30453 Captain Marvel and Nick Fury seems extraordinary though and contains Captain Marvel sporting her onscreen Starforce uniform.

Remarkably, this appealing minifigure has only previously appeared with 77902 Captain Marvel and the Asis which was exclusively available from San Diego Comic-Con last year. Her return is therefore pleasing and the accompanying phone booth incorporates some interesting elements, despite its comparatively modest size.

Minifigures

Several versions of Captain Marvel have been produced since 2016, typically wearing her famous dark blue, red and gold attire. However, this minifigure takes inspiration from Carol's membership of the Kree Starforce so features metallic silver and teal highlights which appear faithful to the onscreen character. The ribbed design seems especially effective, although the arms and legs appear bland without any decoration.

The double-sided head was originally produced for Qi'ra from Solo: A Star Wars Story, displaying cheerful and serious expressions. I think an angry face would have been more suitable for this character and the hair element could perhaps have been improved as well, although its medium nougat colour is superb. Moreover, this minifigure wields trans-orange Power Blasts which are only otherwise found in 892059 Kai.

Nick Fury returns from 76127 Captain Marvel and The Skrull Attack, lacking the distinctive eyepatch that is traditionally associated with this character. The hair piece features splendid texture and I like this head which includes alternative smiling and grimacing faces. The same component has previously appeared on Cyborg minifigures.

Fury's torso looks outstanding and returns from 76127 Captain Marvel and The Skrull Attack, featuring a white shirt with an interesting shoulder holster. This character wears a jacket when meeting Captain Marvel during the movie and appropriate torsos are available, although I think that inaccuracy can be excused because this design appears more unusual.

The Completed Model

Captain Marvel meets Nick Fury immediately after contacting her Starforce allies, having scavenged parts from a nearby phone booth. The phone booth is accordingly included and seems reasonably accurate to the source material, including yellow panels and a trans-clear window element which resembles the movie. The telephone inside looks wonderful beside a printed keypad.

The reverse lacks detail, although no specific additions are needed because the phone booth should be positioned against a wall. A trans-light blue 1x1 brick represents the Tesseract that appears during Captain Marvel and recalls the original Avengers range from 2012, where the Tesseract was instead depicted by a trans-clear 1x1 brick.

Various printed tiles and a radio are placed on top of the phone booth, depicting the devices plundered by Captain Marvel to repair her communicator. The cassette appears particularly interesting because that piece has only appeared once before, in 75935 Baryonyx Face-Off: The Treasure Hunt. Its presence here is certainly appreciated and such attention to accurate detail is remarkable for a polybag.

Overall

30453 Captain Marvel and Nick Fury is definitely among my favourite polybags. This can be attributed primarily to the Captain Marvel minifigure which feels brand new, given its previous exclusivity to 77902 Captain Marvel and the Asis from San Diego Comic-Con. This version of Nick Fury is appealing too and I am pleased to see two minifigures in a Marvel Super Heroes polybag.

The accompanying phone booth is reasonably mundane but captures some important details from the movie, including the items of 1990s technology scattered across the top. The printed cassette tape seems especially enticing. For those reasons, I would certainly recommend this polybag to any Marvel Cinematic Universe fan.

I totally forgot this set was coming out, shows how 2020 has gone. Captain Marvel, Nick Fury, Hawkeye are the only Avengers I really lack in Lego form right now so I guess I could at least kill two birds with one stone in this bag even if its pre-Flerken scratch Fury.

I love this poly!

Although I really wish Carol’s minifig parts were black rather than dark blue. Her figure needs a lot of improvements

Where’s this one available again? Walmart in the U.S.?

I like Captain Marvel's aqua & blue uniform in this set. Nice polybag, I bought mine back in January.

Same goes for me.

That "cassette" tape looks like a VHS tape because of the shape of the flip-up tape guard.

What's the availability in Europe please?

By in United States,

I was able to buy this bag probably 4-5 months ago at a Walmart in the US. Every once in a while I still see some on the shelf with newer bags.

I got mine a while back, and I am absolutely in love with the VHS tape! Also, I used the Starforce torso on a moon-sorceress minifig, combined with Garmadon's cape from The LEGO Ninjago Movie, and it worked really well. The cape looks great as a flow-ey mantle sort of thing, kinda reminded me of a blue Galadriel. Hope this is helpful to you MOC makers!

I love this little set. Awesome pieces here and totally fantastic minifigs! Great depiction for an amusing scene from the movie. Excellent value for a polybag set.

I got this months ago at Walmart, and was wondering when you would review it. I’m still contemplating buying another one of these.

By in Netherlands,

Looks like a generous polybag, 2 figures, accesoires and printed pieces.

Could potentially be my first licensed/fleshie set if I could find it.

LEGO added a Polybag section to their shop website not too long ago, but the availability is very different between US and EU and very limited.

I'd really like to know that, too.

The minifigures are especially cool because you can easily replace the heads/hands for yellow ones (no necklines).

I got mine off Amazon in the UK, a few months back. They still seem to have stock at £8.99. It’s a really nice wee set.

By in United Kingdom,

Also on sale on ebay.co.uk for around £8

By in Belgium,

This is a strangely easy to find polybag for what it is. Not a Captain Marvel fan myself but the figs are nice and the build integrates easily into any city. What's not to love?

By in United Kingdom,

I last saw them at the Lego Discovery Centre in Manchester for £4 with several other poly bags they sell

By in United States,

I also snagged two copies at our local WallyWorld several mo.'s ago, for 4.99 ea. if I recall correctly. One for myself and another for my 4 y/o son, so he'd stop stealing my Minifigures and taking them apart.

Even if you're not a big fan of Marvel (which I'm not, either) for the $5 or so price polybags are, there is just so much here. You have two Minifigures--that's not seen in polybags all that often. Nick Fury's torso can be used with regular (yellow) figs. There is a wealth of printed parts. What interests me the most is the VHS cassette. Then there are the yellow panels and the windscreen.

All and all, this is a really good set, especially for a polybag.

I wonder if the blue jumper under the VHS tape is meant to represent a Blockbuster case.

By in Australia,

So where do I get this in Australia?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I got this at my TRU not long after the Captain Marvel movie came out. Guess it had a MUCH earlier release in Canada.

By in Netherlands,

I got a couple of these in the Netherlands recently in a gift box at a large toy retailer. In Europe, BrickLink has plenty of them still.

By in United Kingdom,

I got mine off eBay in the UK for £8 - which didn’t seem a bad price to me.

As others have said, the VHS tape is a great highlight to the set!

When the SDCC set came out, I swore to myself how much it would mean to me for LEGO to release the Kree Carol again -- and here it was. Been super thrilled with this set for such a nice little polybag.
