A what now?

*Re-searches*

ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) is a humanoid robot created by Honda in 2000.

By in United States,

Sorry, what the heck does a robot have to do with Honda?
Better question: why is there a LEGO set of it?

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

It looks so much like a B-1 Battle droid!

If I recall correctly, this robot was a big technological breakthrough back in the day, hence a Lego set commemorating it. And it was developed by Honda I guess lol

Was gonna say, this definitely reminds me of those cursed Star Wars X Technic sets we used to get, fortunately before I was born

I ended up building a copy of this over 20 years ago, and that stupid white pin is the only part I had to substitute.

Also, I gave mine a katana.

1. Honda made the robot

2. Honda promotional item in the early 00s

Still on the lookout for this one. Refuse to pay shipping as much or more than the purchase price.

Before I was born too. I would have packed away all my LEGO and never played with it again if I saw those abominations!

This robot is all well and good, but can it drive a Honda?

I’d assume it can, but just because something can drive a car doesn’t mean it can drive it well…

It's crazy to me that we got a little technic polybag of the Honda ASIMO, but after almost a decade, we've yet to get a Honda in Speed Champions despite how massive and prolific the company is. Where's our NSX...

Buy 76934, tinker with the rear spoiler...done!

Had no idea this existed lol. This is the kind of real world object we should get from LEGO, not vintage radios or Polaroid cameras.

What I find interesting is the fact that LEGO went to the trouble of producing an exclusive colour for said Pin 3L with Friction Ridges, even though it wouldn't have been necessary since a black one would have been just as inconspicuous.
Just imagine how good some current Technic sets could look with colour-matched pins.

I wanted to build a white Technic car MOC a while ago (James Bond Lotus Esprit) and thought it would look so much better with the white version of said pins. But since I needed several dozens of them, sourcing originals would have been unreasonably expensive.
Thankfully I found a better solution ;-)

They work just like the original, and in contrast to other off-brand parts you can't really tell it's not LEGO with these.

The comments not recognizing ASIMO are making me feel old, and I'm only in my early 30's.

Oh, also... Honda makes plenty of things beyond just cars. And a company the size of Honda has resources to innovate, whether the goal is innovation itself, boosting public interest in their brand, or something else.

As an aside, when I was a kid, Honda to me was best known for their motorbikes, which had quite a reputation and seemed to be winning lots of races. Also, when boats or other watercraft were shown in movies or TV series, lots of them had the Honda name on them.

I echo both comments. Though, I think it's mostly the outboard motors that are Honda, not the entire boat? Though there seem to be Honda boats as well; one of those Japanese companies that produce everything...

Yes, I did mean the name on the outboard motors. Which was usually quite prominent.

By in Netherlands,

Ah, the ASIMO robot. This used to be one of the more advanced androids on the market, bing able to walk stairs and stuff.
The set itself is fun too for the reasons listed above. I love how much it achieved in a transitional time of Technic, as the theme didn't fully become studless until 2003 (some sets were come 2000 and most sets were in 2002, but in 2002 the theme itself nearly disappeared in favor of Racers).

We really need more technic robots again. Pretty much everything has wheels or is a jet or helicopter. Even the solar system set has four wheels!

And btw, the Technic Star Wars sets were beautiful (as long as they were based on droids) and I won't let anyone tell me otherwise ;)

Oh well.
The ASIMO was an astounding creation, the precursor to all the terrifying output from Boston Dynamics.

Or any post 2003 Bionicle set. That was afaik the first community to be bothered by the mismatched color pins.

By in Brazil,

I built that set recently. Of course I'm just missing its inexplicably white 3L pin.

That reminds me of how in the late 90s / early 2000s we got some weird colored Technic parts in some sets. 7163 had green 4L axles, 3451 had brown ones. 7186 had light gray 6L axles, a color that was used only on odd number axles. 8009 got white 6L axles and 7468 used tan ones. The part 32054 (Technic pin 3L with friction and stop bush) very common in black, red and light bluish gray, appeared in blue, green, yellow, dark turquoise, white and even purple in a few sets during that era...

I also pined after this set for years, trying to build my own as best is possible without the correct parts. Finally picked a new one on ebay a couple of years ago and it was not expensive.

Of course, it looks nothing like the real ASIMO but still a nice one to have at last.
