https://lnkd.in/e-bbuzXm With only hours to go before the first game of the UEFA EURO 2024 it is encouraging to see the sustainability initiatives that have been put in place for the tournament. Especially the dedicated Sustainability Managers at each venue with at least 50 support staff, as well as the affordable sustainable travel arrangements and match groupings to reduce the amount of movement between games. The biggest issue is always going to be the ever increasing expansion of the tournament. In 1980 the tournament was expanded to eight teams, then 16 in 1996 through to 2016, when it grew to 24. With that expansion comes more fans and more emissions. There will be a record 2.7 million tickets available this year. There is no allowance for qualifying into the measuring of the footprint of summer tournaments. Qualifying for the Euros expanded from 17 teams in the first tournament to 54 teams now playing 239 fixtures, watched by an estimated five million fans. Still I look forward to seeing the data on the actual impact of the sustainability actions put in place, post tournament. Good luck to all the teams! Last month, some highly distinguished sports professionals and I spoke at the INTERNATIONAL SPORTS CONVENTION on the subject of an independent integrity agency for sport. Here are some of the key takeaways from that session... 🙋‍♂️ An independent sports integrity agency concept, whether regional, global, sport-specific (as with tennis) or pan-sport, could help address the pertinent integrity issues and challenges faced today. This could be a role similar to that played by WADA in the anti-doping arena. 📛 The current landscape is sub-optimal. There are clear conflicts of interest, significant cultural obstacles and an all-too-common unwillingness to address problems. There is also room for improvement in efficiency and transparency. ⚽🏏🎾 Different sports and governing bodies approach different integrity issues in different ways. Consistency is lacking. 👟 Athletes and participants should be keen on the idea: ultimately it is about protecting them, as well as the fans, sponsors and businesses engaged in sport. Trust is paramount. 📑 At the very least, there should be a review that identifies the key issues and how best to address them. 💬 Quote of the day: "Everything seems difficult until it is done".

Money spent on #intermediaries is not leaving football, instead is being reinvested in players through the agencies that while young players are not generating any fees spend money on them. Considering the limitations imposed by English legislation to bring players from abroad, most of those players are over 23 years old and therefore do not trigger training compensation. If a player arrives as a free agent, also does not trigger solidarity mechanism...but still an agent has to be paid. It is simple if #FIFA wants to grant more money to training clubs it only has to increase the % of solidarity mechanism, increase the payment for training compensation and not limit it to be paid until the player is 23... many countries have legislation that limits the amount of money to be paid to agents and intermediaries in any industries.

WHAT DO ECONOMIC CONTROL SYSTEMS CONSIST OF? ✔ One of the major innovations at UEFA level is the introduction of a new parameter: the #SquadCostRatio. The ratio between #playerwages and #revenue considered must remain within a ceiling set at #70% to be reached within three years (starting from 90% in the current season); ✔ For the 2022/23 financial year, Newcastle United Football Club, AS Roma, and Juventus Football Club show the highest ratios (#109%, #101%, and #96% respectively); ✔ The most virtuous clubs, on the other hand, are AFC Ajax, AC Milan, and SSC Napoli with #56%, #58%, and #59% respectively; ✔ In Lega Serie A, the monitoring parameters are as follows: #LiquidityIndex, #IndebtednessIndicator, #ExtendedLaborCostIndicator, #AbsenceOfOverdueDebts; ✔ In The Premier League, in addition to #AbsenceOfOverdueDebts, the aggregate #EBT must not exceed GBP 105m over three years; ✔ In LALIGA, along with #AbsenceOfOverdueDebts and a #breakevenrule of EUR 30m in acceptable aggregate losses over three years, a #SquadCostLimit is added: a cap on squad spending considering the #budget of #revenue for the following year. WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE FOOTBALL CLUB? The ninth edition of Football Benchmark's "Football Clubs' Valuation: The European Elite" is now available! The report analyses and ranks the 32 most prominent football clubs in Europe by their Enterprise Value (EV) according to our proprietary methodology. Key findings: 🏆 Real Madrid C.F. top the ranking, surpassing an EV of EUR 5bn (EUR 5,097m), with Manchester City Football Club (EUR 4,933m) and Manchester United (EUR 4,861m) rounding out the podium. 📈 AC Milan scored the highest #growth for the third consecutive edition (+35.5%), followed by Arsenal F.C (+35.1%). 🌟 Sporting Clube de Portugal and Real Sociedad are the new entries of the 2024 edition, replacing Leicester City Football Club and Wolverhampton Wanderers. 🔍 Transaction volumes have surged in recent years, with deals showing a significant upward trend in the EV/operating #revenue multiple, especially for elite clubs. Our estimated EVs confirm a pronounced gap between elite clubs, represented by the top 10, and other clubs in the top 32. 🔝 For the top 10 clubs, the implied multiple ranges from 4.3x to 6.5x. Manchester United reach the highest figure (6.5x), while Paris Saint-Germain score the lowest (4.3x). ▶ For clubs ranked 11th to 20th, the implied multiple spans from Eintracht Frankfurt's low of 2.5x to Borussia Dortmund's high of 4.5x. 💡 The third cluster shows a broader range of observed multiples, with Olympique de Marseille at a minimum of 1.9x and Atalanta B.C. Here are some challenges the sports world is currently facing and will face soon: 🏟 Costs of Organizing Competitions: After the record-high costs of the Sochi Games, there is a consensus to achieve "more with less." The upcoming Paris and LA Games will test whether this approach is effective. 🏒 Professionalization of Athletes: Athletes' unions are actively working to recognize athletes' economic activities at both national and international levels, along with the benefits that come with it. ⚖ Governance: Good #governance principles are still lacking globally. Corruption scandals continue to emerge despite public efforts to prevent them. Court decisions have allowed certain stakeholders to demand more influence, but the absence of basic governance standards will continue to challenge sports autonomy. 🗺 Globalization: The debate continues between adopting an American or European sports model or a hybrid solution to support worldwide expansion, balancing the professional and social aspects of sports. 🕹 Match Fixing: Advanced algorithms will help NFs and governing bodies in detecting fraud. The rise of AI is expected to anticipate many attempts before they occur. 🏥 Anti-Doping: Recent initiatives proposing competitions without doping controls have disrupted the sports ecosystem. The success of these initiatives depends on the monetization of broadcasting and marketing revenues. ▶ Dual Career: Despite efforts from companies, few former athletes secure positions beyond sales or administration. Improved training conditions have extended athletes' careers, making it harder for older athletes to transition to the labor market. 🚺 Women’s Sports: Issues such as pregnancy and maternity rights, gender-based violence, solidarity, and equal pay have been long-standing. 🗣 Stakeholder Representation: Athletes, teams, and leagues are advocating for more independent, democratic, and effective representation. Following the introduction of NIL in the USA and the IOC’s Rule 40 regulating athletes’ commercial activities (including image rights and data), athletes will increasingly demand more opportunities to exploit their rights. ⚽ New Leagues: The push to end the monopoly of sports bodies (mostly in Europe) has elicited varied reactions within the sports ecosystem, encouraging some leagues and clubs to hope for systemic change, including different revenue redistribution. Conversely, to protect the value of established brands, owners and organizers will attempt to limit competition from new entities. 💸 Expansion of Private Equity (PE): The influx of capital into European sports clubs and leagues favored by USD/EUR FX is gradually reshaping the European sports landscape. These challenges highlight the complex and evolving nature of the sports industry. Addressing them will require collaboration among stakeholders, innovative solutions, and a commitment to fairness and integrity.
