We are kicking off the WeLaR Workshop on labour market institutions and risks at the Università degli Studi di Perugia. 🎯 The event opens with a session exploring the intersection between innovation and labour. In the first presentation, Kenta Ikeuchi (RIETI) will present his work on the relationship between innovative capital and rent-sharing. Sem Vandekerckhove (HIVA-KU Leuven) will examine evolving dynamics of bargaining models, the quality of work, and rent-sharing in the era of digitalisation. Katsufumi Fukuda (Chukyo University) looks at how AI affects the labour share. 🎯 Session 2 shifts the focus to gender gaps. Seamus McGuinness (Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) will analyse the effects of minimum wage increases on hours worked by gender and sector. Piotr Lewandowski (IBS - Institute for Structural Research) will discuss the relationship between job tasks, working hours, and the gender pay gap. 🎯 Session 3 zooms in on vulnerabilities. Sandra Leitner (The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw)) will talk about the influence of trade unions on quality of work. Wojciech Szymczak (IBS - Institute for Structural Research) will explore how unions and technology affect atypical employment. Fabrizio Pompei (University of Perugia) discusses how labour and product market regulations affect vulnerability. 🎯 The final session will focus on labour market flows. Maria Cristina D’Aguanno (Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia) will investigate the drivers of in-work poverty in the EU and Fabio Lamperti (University of Perugia) will talk about the risk of labour market exclusion in the EU. We are excited for a day of engaging discussions!

De werkloosheidsuitkering beperken in de tijd helpt niet om werkzoekenden te activeren naar werk. Politici zijn zo gebrand op het verhogen van de werkloosheidsgraad naar 80%. Mensen in armoede vragen zich, net als Ides Nicaise van HIVA-KU Leuven, af waarom diezelfde politici dan maatregelen nemen waarvan onderzoek én ervaringskennis aantonen dat ze inefficiënt en zelfs contraproductief zijn. "Er zijn de voorbije 30 jaar minstens vijf Belgische studies verschenen waarin geschorste werklozen een aantal maanden later bevraagd werden naar hun arbeidspositie. Daaruit bleek telkens dat ongeveer 20 procent aan het werk was, ongeveer 30 procent het leefloon had aangevraagd, en de overige 50 procent van de radar was verdwenen. Dezelfde overheid die al die burgers hun sociale bescherming ontneemt, wil met alle middelen de werkzaamheidsgraad opkrikken tot 80 procent en maakt zich dan zorgen over de ‘onbereikbaren’ onder de inactieven.", aldus Ides Nicaise. Wat helpt dan wel? ✅ De drempels voor langdurig werkzoekenden en niet-beroepsactieven naar werk en op onze arbeidsmarkt structureel aanpakken. ✅ Zorgen voor betaalbare, kwalitatieve en flexibele kinderopvang, huisvesting en mobiliteit. ✅ Maar ook werken aan inclusieve werkvloeren, discriminatie tegengaan en jobs op maat creëren. Een aantal ervaringen van langdurig werkzoekenden uit onze verenigingen: 📢“Ik heb al verschillende trajecten gevolgd en stages gedaan, maar ik krijg nergens een vast contract. Ik ben goed om gratis te werken, tot ze me moeten betalen.” 📢“Mensen in armoede zijn lui en leven op de kosten van de maatschappij. Hoe vaker je het hoort, hoe meer je dit zelf gaat geloven. Gisteren was ik aanwezig op een inspiratiemoment over "Eenzaamheid in de buurt". Professor Liesbeth De Donder (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) gaf aan dat er hiaten zijn in onderzoek: - te vaak is er een individuele blik op eenzaamheid - vaak enkel focus op ouderen - weinig aandacht voor de verschillende vormen van eenzaamheid (die een andere aanpak vergen): emotionele, collectieve, sociale en existentiële eenzaamheid Met het onderzoek "A lonely planet" willen HIVA-KU Leuven, Thomas More-hogeschool en Vrije Universiteit Brussel de relatie onderzoeken tussen de buurt en eenzaamheid. Er is immers weinig bekend over de impact van de buurt (parken, openbaar vervoer, omgeving, netheid, huisvesting, ...) op eenzaamheid. The WeLaR team met last week at HIVA-KU Leuven to discuss and reflect on the progress we've made over the last year and a half. The meeting was also an opportunity to explore how to translate our research findings into policy recommendations, plan future events, and reflect on the needs of our stakeholders. 🎙 The WeLaR Midterm Conference: “The Effects of Digitalisation, Globalisation, Climate Change, and Demographic Shifts on Labour Markets and Welfare States in the European Union,” has just started in HIVA-KU Leuven! We began with an insightful keynote by Agnieszka Chłoń-Domińczak of SGH Warsaw School of Economics on European social citizenship. 👉 In the first session, Felix Grimm (Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER)), Siegfried Manschein (European University Institute), Ursula Holtgrewe (Centre for Social Innovation), and Wouter Zwysen (European Trade Union Institute (ETUI)) look into the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and platform work on the labour market. Topics include the dynamics of worker reallocation, AI influences on political behaviour, and the role of social partners and state institutions in shaping platform work. 👉 In the second session, we focus on the evolving landscape of employment, particularly atypical employment, and the role of trade unions. Sylwia Radomska (Instytut Nauk Ekonomicznych Polskiej Akademii Nauk),Henri Haapanala (University of Antwerp), Wojciech Szymczak (IBS - Institute for Structural Research), and Ludivine Martin (LISER) address issues ranging from unemployment and population aging to union membership in the post-industrial age, the impact of technology adoption on employment, and the consequences of work-from-home on workers' well-being. 👉 The third session explores various aspects of fiscal policy, wage dynamics, and pension systems. Holger Stichnoth (ZEW - Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research), Thuc Uyen Nguyen-Thi (Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER)), Mikkel Barslund (HIVA-KU Leuven), Marko Vladisavljevic (Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Belgrade), and Karol Madoń (IBS - Institute for Structural Research) will cover the fiscal contributions of immigrants; the impact of automation on retirement decisions; Pan-European pension plans; adjustments to social tax and benefit systems due to automation; and the role of global value chains in influencing worker tasks and wage inequality. 👉 Finally, the fourth session centres on labour and educational mobility and regional convergence in the EU. Sarah McNamara (ZEW - Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research), Fabio Lamperti (Università degli Studi di Perugia), Hans Chr.
