About us

BSEF (The International Bromine Council) is the voice of the bromine industry. We foster technologies and innovation for the changing needs of society globally. We are the international bromine production organisation. Since 1997 we have been working to foster knowledge on the uses and benefits of bromine-based solutions. We believe in science and innovation and it is through investments in research that we harness the need for robust bromine-based technologies. Our members are Albemarle Corporation, ICL Industrial Products, Chemtura and Tosoh Corporation. We commission scientific institutes and independent scientists to evaluate and carry out innovative research on bromine-based solutions while also informing stakeholders on the uses and benefits of bromine-based technologies. HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT BROMINE? Bromine is one element of the periodic table, its chemical symbol is Br. It is a reddish-brown liquid and is never naturally found in its elemental form but rather in inorganic compounds, also known as bromides, and in natural organo-bromine compounds. These are found in soils, salts, air, seawater and in living organisms. Around 500,000 tons of bromine are estimated to be produced annually on a worldwide basis. The largest single use of bromine is in fire safety. Since its discovery, bromine compounds have also been used for water treatment, reduction of mercury emissions, oil drilling, crop protection, energy storage and generation, production of pharmaceuticals, catalyst for plastics (PTA), rubber, photo chemistry, still used for X-rays, absorption systems for air conditioning.

Advancing Fire Safety in defense with Lockheed Martin 🚀 🛰   Recently, BSEF Secretary General Michael H., had the opportunity to visit the F-35 production and to meet with representatives from Lockheed Martin, the global leader in defense technologies. Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs) play an important role in ensuring fire safety in defense applications.   BFRs are essential in enhancing fire safety by providing critical flame retardancy in components such as printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in aircrafts. Materials must meet stringent safety standards, including the Institute for Printed Circuits (IPC) performance standards, to ensure the safety and reliability of aircraft systems over their long lifespans. Given the international nature of aviation, the use of BFRs supports compliance with global safety regulations, enabling safer skies and protecting lives and property.   We thank Lockheed Martin for the valuable insights shared and look forward to continuing our collaboration to prioritize fire safety in aerospace.   LANXESS Albemarle Corporation ICL Industrial Products #BSEF #Aerospace #FireSafety #BFRs #Sustainability #Aviation

Stakeholder Consultation for flame retardants DBDPE, TBPA-Diol and EBTBP   Are you a user of the following substances, do you have or are you developing relevant alternatives, or are you in any other way involved in the substance supply chains? * Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), also known as ethane-bis(pentabromophenyl) (EBP) - CAS No: 84852-53-9; EC No: 284-366-9; * Ethylene-bis-tetrabromophthalimide (EBTBP), CAS No: 32588-76-4; EC No: 251-118-6 * 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, 3,4,5,6-tetrabromo-, mixed esters with diethylene glycol and propylene glycol - CAS No: 77098-07-8; EC No: 616-436-5. The substance is also known as TBPA-Diol or commonly by the trade names ‘SAYTEX RB-79’ or ‘PHT4-Diol'. If yes, your input is welcome!   Considering the possibility of future restriction proposals on different flame retardants in the framework of the ECHA FR Strategy, Apeiron-Team has been contracted by lead registrant, Albemarle, within the wider context of a work programme developed by BSEF (the International Bromine Council), to prepare an analysis of alternatives (AoA) for each substance. The overall aim of the AoAs is to promote proportionality in any forthcoming restriction proposal.   To support the AoAs, Apeiron-Team has launched a consultation exercise to gather information on the volumes, uses and functions of the substances, as well as the availability and suitability of potential alternatives.   For full details see > * DBDPE / EBP - https://lnkd.in/eiU9--tB * EBTBP - https://lnkd.in/eXCTYsDC * SAYTEX RB-79 / PHT4-Diol - https://lnkd.in/eza3GpHi   The deadline for responses is 9 August 2024.
