About us
Stride is the strategic, innovation, design and evaluation team within Life Without Barriers. The goal of Stride is to improve the experiences and outcomes for children, young people and families by sharing our experience, learnings and knowledge, and to partner with agencies who choose to adopt the models we offer. The Stride team is here to help agencies improve the outcomes for the young people they support through the evidence-based approaches, programs and training we offer. Our team was created to share our experience, learnings and knowledge and to partner with agencies who choose to adopt the models we offer. We can help external agencies select the right programs for them – those that will best support the children and families their organisation provides services to. We strive to build awareness of our evidence-informed approaches, what services we offer, and our growing partnerships with universities and researchers.

Over the next two weeks, we have Elliott G. Smith, a Research Associate from the Residential Child Care Project, Cornell University at Cornell University, visiting CARE agencies in Australia to explore data-informed decision making. We started with a great session with this group from Life Without Barriers, who are dedicated to bringing data to life and measuring what matters. We explored the CARE model Theory of Change and discussed how data can help us measure impact. Looking forward to more productive sessions! #DataAnalysis #ImpactMeasurement #CAREModel Courtney Patterson Anthony Raitman Greg Antcliff Ben Hafner Melinda Clarke Anne Jardine Ben Hudson

New research into Peer Parent and Family Advocacy in Child Protection. Stride has long advocated for a family inclusive child protection and out-of-home care system. We're excited to be an industry partner in new family inclusion research, funded by the Australian Research Council and led by the University of Queensland. The study will map the implementation and effectiveness of peer parent and family advocacy in child protection, and seek to build its capability. Peer parent and family advocacy occurs when parents and families with previous lived experience of child protection systems support parents and families who are currently involved with those systems. Other industry partners include Micah Projects, NSW Absec, Community Living Association, the Family Inclusion Network of Western Australia, Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak (QATSICPP). Other university partners are the University of Western Australia and the University of Newcastle. We could not be more proud of our involvement in this important project. Watch this space for updates as it kicks off later in 2024. We love to see it! We're so proud of FISH for this ACWA award nomination. FISH shows the impact that community-based advocacy can have - working to support children and families impacted by the child protection system, and advocating for systems reform through partnership and collaboration. FISH is supported by our own Jessica Cocks, who, with enormous heart and energy, tirelessly supports and enables parents with lived experience to do this important work. Let's go FISH! https://lnkd.in/gUSdtR8M #ACWA2024 Mary Mckinnon Rob Ryan Noble Tabe Brad Swan

Parent leaders of Family Inclusion Strategies in the Hunter (www.finclusionh.org), have been nominated for the partnership and collaboration award from the Association of Children's Welfare Agencies. FISH grew from community and remains deeply in community. It is led and staffed by parents with lived experience of child protection processes. This award nomination comes at the 10 year point in FISH's history - established in 2014 by parents, carers and practitioners who were angry and distressed about children unnecessarily losing their families through the care system. Fast forward 10 years and FISH is punching well above its weight in service design and innovation and in community and systems advocacy for child protection systems change. Throughout our history FISH has partnered, collaborated and made good trouble across the government, non-government, private, philanthropic and university sector. Thanks so much to Rob Ryan and Mary Mckinnon for the nominations. Our ability to partner well is our secret sauce. The awards will be announced at the ACWA conference in June in Sydney. ***You are invited*** Hear presentations from leading researchers on how to advance organisational child-safe practices using contextual safeguarding strategies. Until now, prevention strategies have mainly focused on individuals, such as high-risk adults, and on risk factors associated with children. We need to extend the focus to include social contexts and settings in which abuse occurs. Contextual prevention aims to make these diverse contexts safer for children. Some contexts provide conditions that are conducive to child sexual abuse and pose greater risk than others. When those contextual conditions are altered, children’s safety can be strengthened. This symposium will be of interest to professionals working in child welfare, child protection, residential care, family services. If you are unable to attend, you can still register and receive a link to a recording of the symposium.
