The site was home to Muswellbrook Coal mine for 115 years until 2022. It is now under rehabilitation to restore the land so it can be used as a renewable energy generation and storage precinct. New beginnings for Whitehaven Coal's Werris Creek after 100 years of mining history Whitehaven Coal’s Werris Creek Mine is entering its next official stage of operation, winding down mining activities and transitioning to full-time rehabilitation. In 2022, Werris Creek was recognised as a finalist at the NSW Mining Industry & Suppliers Awards for its significant achievements across safety, production and people outcomes. The next stage of the mine's rehabilitation program focuses on establishing an open box gum woodland scape that is safe, sustainable, and beneficial to the surrounding environment.
