Three things on a Weds: 1) Q1 earnings are throwing up one magic proxy number. Tabreed saw consumption volume for its chilly water up 9% yoy, Emaar says its mall tenants’ sales were also up up 9%. New Salik registrations rose 9%. Spinneys sales were up 10%, but who hasn’t chucked an extra yoghurt in the trolley? 2) If anyone's wondering how much it costs to go public, Spinneys spent 10 million dirhams on its IPO, CEO Sunil Kumar tells us (below, all business). 3) And the Dubai Land Department saw new office rental registrations rise more than 36% yoy Q1. Two interesting things things about that, says CBRE's Taimur Khan. First, 95% of those deals are for less than 2,000sqft, so probably SMEs. Second, given Grade A is basically full, they’re going Grade B and C – which is seeing double digit rent rises as a result.

Abu Dhabi is giving Dubai a run for its money as it emerges as the new playground for high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs), reveals the latest report from real estate consultancy Knight Frank MENA. According to the consultancy’s second annual 2024 Destination Dubai report, HNWIs around the world are prepared to spend $408.3m on residential real estate in Abu Dhabi and a further $388.5m in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK). Whilst he hasn't yet started on Saudi - my expectation is this will shift quickly to 'Riyadh' says Romanna Dada, Head of Venture Building at Public Investment Fund (PIF)'s BIAC. Feldman continued "Middle Eastern money has become the most powerful geopolitical force in the tech industry virtually overnight' Once overlooked, the Middle East has rapidly become the new epicenter of Silicon Valley's ambitions. Lured by substantial investments, Andrew Feldman’s Cerebras Systems is now building advanced supercomputer data centers not just in the US but also near the Emirati desert city. This shift signifies a major pivot in the tech industry's landscape, driven by the ambitious AI arms race and sovereign wealth funds of the Persian Gulf states. Microsoft recently announced a $1.5 billion investment in the UAE’s flagship tech firm, G42, while Sam Altman has made multiple trips to the UAE to secure hundreds of billions for a massive new infrastructure company, InfraCo. Andreessen Horowitz is also stepping up and is in talks to raise $40 billion from Saudi Arabia for a dedicated AI fund. These collaborations aim to cement the region’s status as an AI powerhouse and reduce its economic dependence on oil. Washington is steering some of this shift, using the industry to push the region away from China’s orbit and focusing particularly on the UAE. The White House hosted executives from firms including Microsoft, Google and OpenAI last June for a meet-and-greet with Tahnoun bin Zayed al Nahyan, UAE’s national security adviser. In the previously unreported meeting, the sheikh explained that the wealthy gulf state was open to partnering with leading American artificial intelligence and other tech firms, with the idea that these were ventures that could displace Chinese technology companies long involved in the region. The region is leveraging Silicon Valley partnerships to become an AI powerhouse and lessen its economic dependence on oil, for which global demand is projected to peak this decade. With Cerebras’s technology, G42 is building what could become the world’s most advanced Arabic large language model, enabling AI software to fluidly converse in a language spoken by about 400 million people. The Saudi government aims to boost the economy by regenerating digital infrastructure and has committed to an annual investment of 2.5% of GDP in the research, development, and innovation by 2040. Cloud services are projected to reach $10 billion by 2030. Google has a joint venture with state-owned oil giant Aramco. Oracle plans to invest $1.5 billion in cloud centers. Microsoft is investing $2.5 billion in a new cloud data center. Huawei (China’s tech giant) will invest $400 million in a cloud region. UAE announces grace period for residency violators 🇦🇪  The UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has announced a two-month grace period for residents who have breached the country's residency system. The amnesty will commence on 1st September 2024, allowing individuals who have violated residency laws to either regularise their status or leave the country without incurring any fines. This initiative aims to provide violators with an opportunity to rectify their situation in accordance with UAE law. The ICP states that this measure reflects the nation's values of compassion and tolerance. How to Apply for Fine Exemptions for UAE Residency: Applicants need to submit a dedicated service request by visiting the nearest Customer Happiness Centre (Amer). They should obtain a queue ticket, present their application along with the required documents to a customer service representative, and pay any applicable fees. This service is available at the General Administration – Al Aweer Centre from Monday to Thursday, 7.30 AM to 7 PM, and on Friday from 7.30 AM to 12 noon and 2.30 PM to 7 PM. Despite the growth of the video on demand market, traditional TV viewership is seeing a slow but steady growth worldwide.    However, this doesn’t seem to be the case in the UAE.   TV viewing has declined among UAE residents, according to YouGov’s latest media report.   A higher proportion of UAE residents (70%) spent less than 10 hours per week on live TV viewership in 2023 compared to 2021 (54%).   Aside from this, video on demand (VOD) platforms have experienced increased usage in the last two years, with Amazon Prime and YouTube having had the largest uplift.   The report found that Gen Z were the most likely to use on demand services, with YouTube dominating Gen Z’s top choice for on-demand TV.
