Call for Papers: Planetary Health and Infectious Diseases

Open Forum Infectious Diseases (OFID) is seeking proposals for papers exploring the complex interplay between natural and built environments and infectious diseases. Accepted proposals will be invited to submit a full paper to be part of a special collection on the topic.

OFID welcomes proposals in all areas of planetary health and infectious disease, with particular interest in proposals on:

  • Planetary health and its role in infectious diseases
  • Prevention of infectious disease through environmental interventions
  • Antimicrobial resistance and agriculture
  • Challenges and risks for under-resourced communities
  • How indigenous knowledge systems can inform the linkages between infectious diseases and the environment
  • Ecological factors playing a role in the risk, determinants, distribution, and severity of infectious diseases
  • How climate change is affecting infectious diseases
  • Emerging and expanding zoonotic and vector-borne diseases
  • Medical education in planetary health and infectious diseases
  • The role of infectious diseases and infection control in generating waste and carbon emissions in healthcare, and potential solutions

Key details:

  • Proposals are due April 29, 2024. Submit your proposal.
  • Authors will be notified of acceptance into the collection by May 15.
  • Full papers from accepted proposals will be due August 29, 2024.
  • Anticipated publication date: Early 2025.
  • OFID welcomes original research articles, brief reports, novel case reports, reviews, and perspectives articles.
  • All papers will undergo full peer review, and publication is dependent on the peer review process.
  • When a paper is accepted after peer review, the accepted version will publish online immediately, while the final version will be embargoed to publish with the full collection.
  • OFID particularly encourages proposals from authors in low and middle-income countries, under-resourced communities, and from groups under-represented in medicine.
  • OFID charges an open access fee that varies in price depending on article type and IDSA membership status. Authors from a select list of countries can publish in OFID for free, and additional waivers are available for researchers without funding for open access fees (regardless of country).
