AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti plans 'to break some glass' in new era of college sports

Pernetti said that he is open to a number of revenue-driving options -- such as a “leaguewide jersey patch” for all teams across all sports, “perhaps as an NIL engagement"AAC
New AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti is “open to fresh ways to drive revenue” as he outlines his “vision for a conference that is willing to make waves to keep pace in an evolving era for college sports,” according to Greg Luca of the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS. Pernetti said, “The reality is our role is to break some glass. Collegiate athletics has changed. It’s not what it was 10 years ago. People have to think differently about the industry in order to try to create more resources, so the institutions can deliver on a great experience.” He said that he is open to a number of revenue-driving options -- such as a “leaguewide jersey patch” for all teams across all sports, “perhaps as an NIL engagement.” Even the name of the conference could be “sold as a branding opportunity.” Luca noted Pernetti was also open to “considering collaborations with private equity,” believing that can “provide both a financial boost and ‘operational expertise’ on the business side.” While some in college athletics have “expressed doubt about giving away a measure of control to entities driven purely by profit,” Pernetti was quick to note that “similar arrangements are already in motion.” He pointed to the Univ. of Texas’ Moody Center, which was funded by the Oak View Group in "exchange for the ability to manage the venue and keep revenue from non-Longhorns events.” Pernetti: “This whole thing about private equity comes in and they run your business and tell you what to do, that’s not true. If you pick the right partner” (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 6/30).
