Report: A's could see a reunion with Oakland if mayor is forced out

If Oakland were to get a new mayor, the change “might provide an opportunity for the A’s and Oakland to discuss a reunion,” according to sources cited by Scott Ostler of the S.F. CHRONICLE. Mayor Sheng Thao, just 18 months into her rookie term, is the "subject of a recall election" in November. Some of Thao’s allies are hostile to MLB and A’s owner John Fisher. Ostler wrote if Thao goes, “the scenery changes.” Some turnover in the city council “would also help, since Fisher and MLB felt hostility from that body,” but a change of mayors “could get Fisher’s and MLB’s attention, especially if their Vegas plans falter.” For negotiations in Oakland to restart, Las Vegas and Fisher would have to “cooperate by bungling the ballpark ‘deal’ they are working on.” If the Las Vegas deal “hits serious snags," Oakland could “tempt the A’s to take a new look at their old home.” But the chance of reclaiming the A’s is “slimmer than it would have been” had the city worked out a lease extension with the A’s, “preventing that camp-out experience in Sacramento” (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/27).
