D-backs making progress toward new lease agreement at Chase Field

D-backs CEO Derrick Hall said the club is “making progress” on a lease extension to stay at Chase Field, according to Theo Mackie of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. With its current lease set to expire in 2027, the club has been engaged in discussions with local governments to “secure funding for significant renovations to the ballpark.” Hall said that the club “does not necessarily need to finalize that funding deal before it signs a lease extension.” Hall indicated that the team’s preference “would be for a longer-term deal that extends beyond the next few decades.” Mackie noted that Hall’s comments come just a few months after Managing General Partner Ken Kendrick “expressed frustration” with the D-backs’ “inability to secure a funding deal.” Hall indicated that the November election is a "potential target date by which to get a deal done.” Hall: “We have momentum with (the elected officials) that are there now. So time-wise, it probably makes sense to get it done before the election. But if it comes afterwards, I still think we'll be OK.” Kendrick has said that his ownership group is "willing to spend hundreds of millions” on the renovations, but the team is “looking for additional financial help from local governments to complete the funding.” Team officials have estimated that the project will cost $400-$500M (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 6/25).
