PGA Tour adds Aon CMO Andy Weitz to new C-Suite role

The PGA Tour has made an addition to its C-Suite, tabbing longtime Aon executive Andy Weitz to a role that will wield significant power.

Weitz, Aon’s CMO, is being named the tour’s new chief marketing and communications officer, as well as its exec vice president of investor relations, a newly created role.

Weitz has managed Aon’s OMP deal with the tour that goes back to 2019, and in the last two or three months began having discussions with the tour about its new direction following the investment from the Strategic Sports Group.

The tour has had chief marketing and communications officers in the past, but the EVP/investor relations role is newly created following the SSG investment.

“It does feel like we’re at an inflection point in the game and there are so many important stakeholders,” Weitz told SBJ last week. “It starts with fans.”

Under Weitz, Aon has sponsored the tour’s “Risk Reward Challenge” that also runs on the LPGA, and prior to this year began title sponsoring the Aon Swing 5 and Aon Next 10, which give players paths into the tour’s new Signature events. Aon also has had a deal with the PGA of America for the Ryder Cup.

Ty Votaw was the tour’s last CMO to also have oversight of its communications at the same time, but those duties were divided when he moved to the EVP/International role in 2017. Votaw retired about two years ago.

Those responsibilities have been split up among a number of executives in the years since.

Weitz said he has “a lot to learn” and in the short term is “looking to build on momentum the team has in place.”

Weitz and his family will relocate from Austin to Ponte Vedra Beach in August. He will report directly into Commissioner Jay Monahan and will have oversight of approximately 200 employees.

Korn Ferry led the tour's search for the role.
