Duck boat company says exposure from Boston parades outweighs financial hit

The Celtics’ championship parade on Friday will “surely be glorious” for fans, but it means a “loss of revenue” for Boston Duck Tours, the company that provides the vehicles the team will ride on, according to Lance Reynolds of the BOSTON HERALD. Boston Duck Tours has “canceled all tours for the day,” calling everyone who had booked an outing to either “confirm the cancellation and a refund or to reschedule a trip another day.” Company CEO Cindy Brown said that the revenue shortfall will amount to “definitely over six figures.” However, she said that the rally is “'all worth it' despite the monetary loss due to its global reach.” Brown: “Before they even won, people were saying ‘Cue the duck boats!’ and the monikers, all the memes, all the social media -- it’s about our company.” She added, “We were just saying ‘Can you believe that this little company has this platform to do something amazing?'” (BOSTON HERALD, 6/20). Brown said that Boston Duck Tours is “expecting to deploy anywhere from the high teens to 25 vehicles” for the parade. In Boston, Emma Healy notes the company “doesn’t get paid for the use of its boats,” though it also “doesn’t pay the city or the team to use its boats.” Brown: “The marketing opportunity and the pure joy for our staff to be involved in something so important to the city is worth it” (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/21).
